Title A name given to the resource Madison County, Kentucky Court Records Description An account of the resource This collection consists of the original court documents that were transcribed into the volumes held in the Madison County Courthouse. Included were receipts and notes that documented local businesses and epidemics as well as materials on the county poor house and infirmary. In the early 1900s there are dozens of receipts asking the court for burial expenses for individuals who couldn't afford them. These are pre-death certificates and may be helpful for genealogists to find death information. Local elections are documented with petitions and documents relating to polling places. Jail records offer a look into the early judicial system. Moonshiners in the post-prohibition era are documented along with smallpox epidemics, small businesses, and local roads, making this collection especially important for early 20th century Madison County history. Title A name given to the resource Wallace Family Papers Description An account of the resource Through correspondence, diaries, speeches, photographs, news clippings, and other primary source materials the public career and personal life of William Luxon Wallace and his family are documented. Glimpses of late nineteenth century Richmond, KY social and political life can be found in the correspondence of Wallace's father, Coleman Covington. In addition, due to Wallace's significance as an organizer in the Kentucky Republican Party, the collection sheds some light on the party's history during the first half of the twentieth century. It also contains political memorabilia which Wallace assembled along with a quantity of materials that document his World War I experience. The correspondence is mostly personal and covers Republican Party activities, World War I, and the proper behavior expected from young women of the 1920s. Other letters deal with various state and national elections. When Wallace served on the Eastern Kentucky University Board of Regents, the subject of the correspondence shifts to Eastern. The collection also includes several diaries from the women in the family, Wallace’s wife wrote over a span of 44 years; his sister wrote while she was at school in Louisville in the 1920s and there is one volume from his sister-in-law. Title A name given to the resource League of Women Voters of Richmond, KY Description An account of the resource In late Spring 1962 Jay Ogden who had been active in the League of Women Voters in other locations was asked by the state league to form a unit in Richmond. Mrs. Ogden and three other Richmond residents joined the existing Berea LWV. In the summer of that year a provisional league had been formed in Richmond with 15 members. This number increased to 29 charter members by November 1962. Mrs. Ogden served as both the Organizing Chairman and the Provisional League President, 1962-1964. The Richmond League was granted independent status in April 1964. The records contained in this collection shows the LWV of Richmond to be very involved in local and state affairs, with continuing interest in national issues, but with less activity on that level. The papers in the Local Program Series are perhaps the most noteworthy as they show the league studying an issue, arriving at conclusions, and acting on those conclusions. Some of these actions were successful such as the establishment of a local health department tax; some of them were unsuccessful such as the failure to establish a local library taxing district. All these programs tell much about how the League of Women Voters of Richmond worked. Only a portion of this collection has been digitized. Subjects range from individual faculty headshots and classroom pictures to commencement and candid everyday student life photos. Organizational pictures, shots of campus in general, athletics and other official photos taken from the university photographer are also included. Many of these images were taken for publication in marketing materials or for use in the school newspaper, yearbook and alumni magazines. The collection also includes snapshots taken by employees attending events. The collection may be used for all types of research, keeping in mind that individuals are often unidentified, so search broadly. All images available have been described here, but not all are scanned. Description An account of the resource The Shropshire Collection includes a large variety of circus material from the early to mid 1900s that was donated to the Dorris Museum by Mrs. James Shropshire. When the Dorris Museum closed, the collection was transferred to Special Collections and Archives. The items within the collection include photos of performers and circus snapshots, post cards, circus newspapers, programs and newspaper clippings, as well as lifetime circus passes and tickets.
