OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Vice President

Mr. and Mrs. R.R. Richards
410 Lancaster Avenue
Richmond, Ky. 40475
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Richards:
The Centennial Alumni Awards Banquet last Friday was one of the truly
memorable occasions during the Centennial celebration of higher education
on the Eastern Kentucky University campus and it was a genuine pleasure
for me to share with you in this tribute to the outstanding graduates of
higher education here.
Enclosed are some photographs, which I hope will serve as mementoes of the
event, an extra copy of the printed program, and a special historical
supplement from the Richmond Daily Register, saluting our centennial observance.
News releases of your award will be mailed very shortly to the media you
indicated. If you did not return the media list to the information desk
before leaving the Keen Johnson Building , please send me a list of newspapers, radio and television stations, and trade or professional journals
who you would like to receive the release and photograph. The release will
routinely be sent to media of your present residence and your hometown.
I hope that you will let us hear from you and that you will return to the
campus often. You have the congratulations and best wishes of the University. My fondest hope is that good health and prosperity shall be yours in
the years ahead.
Si~ ,

Progress Report, Alumni Century Fund

We are pleased to report that the Alumni Century Fund now totals $110,333 in
pledges as of thfs date. Actual receipts total $33,650, which represents
substantially more than one-fifth of the p_ledged amount.A closer look at the progress to date reveals the following data about the
donors:

Other statistics show that there are presently 45 members of the faculty
c1nd staff of Eastern who have pledged a total of $22,500. Of these, 28 are
alumni members while 17 are non-alllllni.

-2-

Richmond has the largest representation on the growing Century Club roster
with 54 members. These are in addition to the 45 EKU faculty and staff
members. Thirty-five of the Richmond members are non-alumni, including
seven corporate members.
The number of non-alumni members dramatizes the fact that membership is not
restricted to alumni. Certainly, we would expect that the majority of the
funds could be provided by our alumni, but everyone is eligible to participate in the campaign. It should be pointed out that membership in the
Century Club also entitles non-alumni donors to associate membership in the
Alumni Association which includes all the privileges of active members,
except the right to vote.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the campaign thus far has been the
universal acceptance and participation by the students. During the first
three months of the Century Fund drive, 17 student organizations have pledged
a total of $21,683 while individual students have contributed an additional
$500. Still other groups have reported that they hope to pledge the fall
semester.
Bill Aiken, Louisville, who ended his tenn as president of the Alumni
Association following last week's Alumni Day program, suggests that many
people do not realize that the annual payments by donors may be made by
post-dated checks representing semi-annual, quarterly, or monthly payments.
Checks will be deposited on the dates indicated. Although we hope to draw
as much interest as possible on actual cash investments before we begin
using the funds for construction costs of the Meditation Chapel, this plan
is perfectly acceptable. For those who can afford annual payments of $100
or more for each of the five years, or a single payment of $500 or more,
this plan will speed up our campaign. But, the installment method of
payment is not to be disregarded at all. We sincerely appreciate all types
of payment.
Some of the Richmond-Madison County Century Fund Committee members have
raised a question concerning corporate membership in the Century Club. For
example, how many members of the board of directors of a corporation will a
$1,000 contribution entitle for membership benefits? The only fair answer
is: "Divide the amount of the contribution by $500. 11 In other words, if
a corporation wants a membership and, say, five of its board members desire
Century Club benefits, the corporation should be expected to contribute
$2,500 to the Fund.
One of the disappointing aspects of the program thus far has been the
scarcity of gifts of $1 000 or more. There have been only a handful of
gifts of $1,000 from individuals and corporations to date. On the other
hand, seven student organizations have pledged amounts ranging from $1,000
to $4,000 to the Century Fund. We believe that several corporations would
participate in our programs if it is called to their attention by some of
our influential alumni and supporters. The memorial program has lagged
thus far. Specific items may be sponsored by donors to serve as memorials,
including:

$1,000
1,000
2,500
2,500
8,000

Items thus far sponsored as memorials include the alter (Class of 1969 -$2,500); organ (Class of 1968 -- $4,000); west entrance doors (Class of 1967
-- $1,733.44, balance of treasury); spire (Class of 1971 -- $2,000 or more),
and five other individuals or groups have sponsored either a stained glass
section or a pew.
The fund-raising Century Club campaign is completing its third month this
week. Approximately three weeks ago, when the Fund was less than $60,000,
a total of $100,000 was set, to be reached by Alumni Day. At the close of
the day last Saturday, the total had reached $105,000. Another goal has
been set -- $150,000 - plus -- which we hope to reach by July 1. And we
hope to pass our original goal of $200,000 by October 1, one month ahead
of our target date of November 2 (Homecoming Day). With rising construction
costs and with the notorious record of architect's low estimates, we want to
insure that a sufficient amount of money is raised to construct the kind of
chapel that will be a beautiful landmark on this campus and a wonderful
memorial to Eastern from her alumni and friends.
Please review the enclosed list of Century Club members. Thank those members
whom you know for their loyalty and solicit their continued help in our
program. Make your own list of persons whose names should be on the list
and~ •• you can use your own imagination as to what you should do. Sign
'em up!
The skeptics should realize by now that the drive is going to succeed. The
second $100,000 should be easier than the first. But only with your dedicated
support.
We are making plans to bring the members of the Century Club back to the
campus November 2 as special guests of the University for Homecoming Day
and to participate in ground-breaking ceremonies, a special reception and
other doings on that special occasion. We are confident that these ambitious
goals can, and will, be met or surpassed if we get the support and encouragement of our alumni and friends who will volunteer some time and influence to
our cause. Won't you make an extra effort in the days and weeks immediately
ahead so that the success of our program can be ensured? Write if you need
stationery, envelopes, brochures, pledge cards, color slides, or any
assistance from our office.

We are enclosing three brochures, each with pledge cards and return envelopes,
and some additional pledge cards, in hopes that you will continue to give
your support as a leader in this drive.
Thank you for your work and for your encouragement. We know that this effort
wili be remembered for many years to come as one of the most significent

undertakings in Eastern's history. Perhaps this will also provide the spark
that ~rill ignite the flame of loyalty ·and enthusiasm which Eastern must have
if she is to reach the heights we all dream of.

Two pledges have been received since this
report was typed, making a total of 350 members.
Even though the monetary goal has been reached
due to many smaller contributions, we shall
continue our efforts to obtain the goal of 400
members which would assure us of capital to
cover any unexpected building costs.

<text>The Richards Family Papers contains correspondence, photographs, genaology, legal documents, financial documents, and documents related to EKU. The collection follows Mary Frances McKinney Richards and R.R. "Dick" Richards for the length of their careers at Eastern Kentucky University. Dick began teaching at Eastern in 1929, while Mary Frances began teaching in 1924. Records indicate that they both retired from teaching in the summer of 1966, but they remained deeply involved in Alumni affairs until their deaths. Mary Frances and Dick stayed in contact with many of their students throughout the years, which is displayed in the large correspondence selection. Additionally, the McKinneys rented out rooms in their home to local boys attending Eastern, and Mary Frances remained close with many of them for years after. Although Mary Frances and Dick never had children of their own, they treated many of these students as their own. The Richards Family enjoyed traveling the globe, taking many interesting and beautiful photos which are represented in the collection. This collection contains a host of genealogical materials from many Madison and Clark County families, which reflects the interest that Mary Frances had in researching her family history. Mary Frances maintained very organized genealogical records, complete with identification numbers and photos. In addition to those records, Mary Frances documented her own family history through written stories. Mary Frances and Dick were also members of the First United Methodist Church in Richmond, Kentucky, so there are many documents related to the church itself as well as the history of the church.

It is important to note that most of the documents in this collection are related to Mary Frances rather than Dick. Born in 1900 to Leatha Griggs McKinney and David B. McKinney, Mary Frances remained unmarried until her early fifties. Therefore, much of the collection highlights her life prior to her marriage to Dick. The collection contains Mary Frances' diaries, beginning as early as 1917, and a variety of early correspondence only addressed to Mary Frances. Additionally, Mary Frances was involved in multiple organizations which are reflected in the collection. For example, Mary Frances' work with the Danforth Foundation in student outreach is represented in this collection, as is her involvement with YWCA and Alumni Affairs. While working as the Alumni secretary, Mary Frances appears in correspondence as opinionated on Eastern's affairs, as well as intelligent in her knowledge of campus politics. From Mary Frances' perspective, this collection also depicts WWII and the impact that the war had on Eastern and its student population.

Finally, due to their life-long involvement with Eastern, this collection illustrates the Eastern experience from the perspective of the Richards Family. Their perspective offers not only experience as faculty, but students as well. Included in this collection are many pieces of ephemera and memorbilia from Mary Frances and Dick's time at Eastern. Additionally, the collection contains many photos of Eastern through the years, including early photos from their time as students and expanding through the many homecoming events at Eastern. The Richardses lived near campus, on Lancaster, and their home at Lancaster is represented in the collection through photos as well.</text>
