Description
An account of the resource
This collection consists of scans from a selection of photographs, postcards and ephemera from Charles R. Smith. Most are from Madison County, Kentucky and include images of people and places. Of note are the photos of many of the Elks Club exalted rulers between the years 1902 and 1996. Most of the pamphlets and programs are related to local churches such as First Baptist and First Christian.
All materials were digitized and returned to Mr. Smith.

This collection includes some of the earliest color images of Eastern's campus and faculty and students. Subjects include homecoming, classroom activities, student life and campus scenes. Most of the collection consists of 2x2 and 3x3 mounted slides, but also includes some film that was never mounted as well as some large format slides. The University seems to have used color transparencies for the color images that appeared at the front of the yearbook.

This collection consists of negatives of photographs of Eastern. These were taken by the university photographer and most are photographs that were taken for publication or promotion. Many of these negatives were printed and can be found in the <a href="https://digitalcollections.eku.edu/items/browse?collection=78">EKU photograph collection</a>.<br /><br />The collection includes photos of campus, events, students and faculty and staff. There are also some images of locations outside Eastern such as Cumberland Falls, Calumet Farm and the Garden of Hope.<br /><br />This inventory is not complete and many negatives can only be accessed by contacting Special Collections and Archives. Scans of negatives with only a description can be requested by filling out a <a href="https://archives.eku.edu/audio-visual-duplication-form" target="_blank" rel="noopener">duplication request</a>.

Taylor, Jimmy Photographs
Description
An account of the resource
Jimmy Taylor was a local studio photographer who worked in Richmond from 1942-1967. He shot many of the Eastern yearbook portraits and group photos. In addition to this he also did studio portraits for local schools and the general public. He photographed places, events and groups throughout the county as well as duplication of old photographs, Bible records, military records and other documents that people needed copies of. The collection contains nearly 30,000 negatives and prints, with about 90% of the collection being negatives.

Correspondence regarding the consolidation of Central University and Centre College, politics, Jere's health, religion and the Harry B. Hanger estate. Some letters are handwritten copies of correspondence Jere sent to Governor Sampson about Eastern and rural education. One letter is from Clarence Woods to Dr. J.T. Dorris. Woods was the mayor of Richmond when Eastern was established and in this letter he writes the founding of Eastern from his perspective. (9 items)

The Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Photograph Collection consists of photographs and negatives of students, faculty, and events at EKU. Subjects range from individual faculty headshots and classroom pictures to commencement and candid everyday student life photos. Organizational pictures, shots of campus in general, athletics and other official photos taken from the university photographer are also included. Many of these images were taken for publication in marketing materials or for use in the school newspaper, yearbook and alumni magazines. The collection also includes snapshots taken by employees attending events.
The collection may be used for all types of research, keeping in mind that individuals are often unidentified, so search broadly. All images available have been described here, but not all are scanned. Photographs with only a description can be requested by filling out a duplication request (see the link in the menu at the top of the page).

Title

Central University Records
Description
An account of the resource
Central University was founded as the result of a split of the Presbyterian Church in Kentucky into Northern and Southern branches. While the Presbyterian Church had split into two branches in 1861, principally over the issue of slavery, the Church did not split in Kentucky until 1867. The branches both claimed control of Centre College in Danville, and it finally took a Federal court in 1871 to determine that the Northern branch controlled the institution. A group of concerned members of the Southern Synod met in 1872 and formed the Alumni Association of Central University. Members included Alumni of Centre College as well as other prominent leaders of the movement. The Alumni Association offered to cooperate with the Synod in establishing a university. At a meeting of the Alumni Association in Louisville, in February 1873, an effort to provide synodical control of the University was defeated. Central University received a charter from the State Legislature on March 3, 1873. Shackelford Family Papers
Description
An account of the resource
The Shackelford Papers, through correspondence, diaries, photographs, newspaper clippings and other materials, document the public career and personal life of William Rodes Shackelford and his family. The correspondence series consists of letters Shackelford received from his classmates at Central University, Richmond, KY acquaintances, and business associates. Glimpses of Richmond educational, social and cultural life are found in the correspondence along with discussions on local, state and national political issues are covered, especially the watershed 1896 presidential election between William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley and the Spanish American War.<br /><br /><span>Shackelford kept a diary beginning when he was 18 and entering Central University and continuing until 1912 with a break from 1890 to 1907. The diary from his Central University time includes details about his student days. Also of interest are the ledgers of Dr. S.M. Letcher which indicate who he treated and what they were treated for. The Legal Documents series includes materials from a number of suits involving the Clay family and a case involving betting on an election.</span><br /><br />Only a portion of this collection has been digitized.
