This collection consists of negatives of photographs of Eastern. These were taken by the university photographer and most are photographs that were taken for publication or promotion. Many of these negatives were printed and can be found in the <a href="https://digitalcollections.eku.edu/items/browse?collection=78">EKU photograph collection</a>.<br /><br />The collection includes photos of campus, events, students and faculty and staff. There are also some images of locations outside Eastern such as Cumberland Falls, Calumet Farm and the Garden of Hope.<br /><br />This inventory is not complete and many negatives can only be accessed by contacting Special Collections and Archives. Scans of negatives with only a description can be requested by filling out a <a href="https://archives.eku.edu/audio-visual-duplication-form" target="_blank" rel="noopener">duplication request</a>.

An account of the resource
This collection consists of images of art, memorial plaques, and artifacts across the Eastern Kentucky University campus. The inventory was created in 2006 when the University celebrated its centennial, and all items were researched and given a number. If possible they were also given a tag with this number. Because of the amount of time since the original inventory, it is quite possible that at least some pieces are no longer in the same location. It is also possible that later acquisitions of art are not in this inventory. The position that documented these items was a temporary position, and there are no procedures for adding content to the inventory.

An account of the resource
The Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Photograph Collection consists of photographs and negatives of students, faculty, and events at EKU. Subjects range from individual faculty headshots and classroom pictures to commencement and candid everyday student life photos. Organizational pictures, shots of campus in general, athletics and other official photos taken from the university photographer are also included. Many of these images were taken for publication in marketing materials or for use in the school newspaper, yearbook and alumni magazines. The collection also includes snapshots taken by employees attending events.
The collection may be used for all types of research, keeping in mind that individuals are often unidentified, so search broadly. All images available have been described here, but not all are scanned. Photographs with only a description can be requested by filling out a duplication request (see the link in the menu at the top of the page).

The Eastern Alma Mater
��OHN GRANT CRABBE, the eponym of this
library, was President of Eastern Kentucky University ( then Eastern Kentucky Scare Normal School)
from April 9, 1910, to September 1, 1916. Born at
Mr. Sterling, Ohio, November 29, 1865, the son of
Thomas W. and Julia Baughman Crabbe, he early
distinguished himself in academ ic pursuits. The year
1889 was an auspicious one for him: he married Jennie
Florence Graff of Delaware, Ohio, the woman who
was to grace the busy years during which her husband's
brilliant career was shaped. Thar same year he earned
his A.B. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, where
he also received his M.A. degree ( 1892), and where
he was Phi Bera Kappa. His interest in education
urged him to take the Ped. M. degree from Ohio
University, awarded in 1897; and his dedication to
education, along with his steadily maturing leadership
in the field, subsequently brought him honorary doctorates from Berea and Miami University ( 1909), the
Scare University of Kentucky at Lexington ( 1911), and
his alnut mater, Ohio Wesleyan University (1918) .
Prior ro his tenure as President of Eastern, he had
been successively Head of the Department of Greek
and Larin in the Flint (Michigan) Normal College,
Superintendent of Public Schools of Ashland Kentucky
( 1890-1907), and Scare Superintendent of Public lnsrrucrion of Kentucky.

A LIVING TESTAMENT
TO A GREAT VISION
Crabbe's famous per dog. Teddy, unfortunately, proved
t0 be something less than the ideal office dog. Resenting intrusions, Teddy often rushed at the visirors and
"chewed rhem" about the legs. More than once Dr.
Crabbe was brought from his inner office by the noise,
there to find his callers cringing in the corner. To
reporters Teddy was known as D r. Crabbe's official, if
somewhat irksome, ambassador, who always dealt enthusiastically with their greetings.
President James K. Patterson of the University of
Kentucky, who often accompanied President Crabbe on
his "whirlwind campaigns" to raise the level of education in Kentucky, said chat whenever the man was confronted by opponents- not an uncommon occurrence
-he could always deal with the differences through his
extreme good humor, commonsense, and rare gift of
wit. People who gathered with Dr. Crabbe at educational meetings all over Kentucky found themselves
entertained as well as informed.
The true greatness of this man can be partially understood by scrutinizing the causes ro which he gave himself within the unique context of his time. While
ochers swod back, he seemed ro take the lead in espousing issues which, though innately just as Time has
vindicated them, were then unpopular. He wanted to
take rhe schools our of politics, to build new secondary
schools and universities throughout Kentucky, to devdop an improved tax structure for financing such
construction and improving the quality of instruction
through establishing higher salaries for teachers. He
pressed for the highest quality of textbooks w ith in rhe
realistic bounds of financial limitations. He repeatedly
urged the education of women and expressed the democratic "necessity" of admitting women ro public insrirurions of higher learning, and to a right which he

maintained was already theirs-the right tO vote. In
this benighted age he had the courage tO support personal and academic freedom for teachers in all phases
of public education.
As this edifice before us is rededicated in this generation tO a man who passed this way three generations
ago, a striking concinnity seems evident in the linkage
between his progressive imagination and the dynamic
vision which is Eastern's today. Thus, it is not surprising-indeed, it is especially fitting-that the particular dream of John Grant Crabbe was "a great, modern university, equipped, manned, and exploited tO the
highest degree of efficiency." His dream necessitated
an accompanying belief in improved standards for
teachers a nd students alike. He demanded, for himself
as well as orhers, not merely excellence, but the best
that is in each human being. He was a man possessed
by the power of a visionary imagination; yet, in spite
of this fact, his personality was such that even his detractors, a lthough they could seldom accept his views,
could acce pt and respect the man himself.
During his six-year administration as President of
Eastern, t he student body was greatly increased, and
both the number of faculty members and the annual
budget were doubled. It was largely due tO President
Crabbe's foresight that plans were made for developing the l ibrary, as well as for the expansion of curricula and departments of instruction. However, it remained fo r his successor and friend, President Thomas
Jackson Coates, t0 convert those plans into reality. In
1924, the same year that President Crabbe died, the
initial pha se of construction of the John Grant Crabbe
Library w as completed.
Dr. Cra bbe assumed the presidency of Colorado State
Teachers College, Greeley, Colorado, on September 1,
1916. He had already been honored by his selection

as President of the National Education Association in
1913 and as State Direct0r of the National Education
Association in 1916. Geographical relocation did not
alter his leadership in education. He held the positions
of Secretary of the North Central Council of Normal
School Presidents; Secretary of the American Association of Teachers Colleges; and Chairman of the Committee of International Educational Relations of the
National Council of Normal School Presidents. He
was an author of many bulletins and monographs on
educational subjects. In spite of his absorption with
educational problems, throughout his life President
Crabbe showed a remarkable interest in the arts, especially music. Musical director of many Chautauqua
assemblies, and an organist of note, he was composer
of such songs as "Beauty for Ashes," "If I Forget Thee,"
and "Kentucky Schools." He seems to have been, in
the words of Francis Bacon, a "universal man."
As we here today press on to the future, we are
cognizant of our roors in the past. No oak tree holds
its leaves unless its roots are deep and strong. Thus,
it seems firri ng that the very magnitude of this edifice
before us, holding within its walls the interleaved
knowledge of the ages, reflects nor only the factual
accomplishment of a new age, but also che soaring
imagination of the man whose name it bears. John
Grant Crabbe found his commitment to God and Mankind in his work. He seemed to have worked for the
joy of work and, in Kipling's phrase, "in his separate
scar." The light of his making still spreads across the
pageant of our lives today. If, in the words of Thomas
Carlyle, 'The true University of these days is a Collection of Books," then this library is not merely the
monument to a man, or even the fulfillment of his
p lans. It is more than these. It is the heart of this
viable university. It is a living testament to the light
of a great man's vision, and to that of his successors.

major instructional nucleus of the Eastern campus. A vast storehouse of knowledge, it serves as both
the literal and figurative heart of the University. The
far-sighted decision for expansion reflected administrative cognizance of the need for rapid growth in accordance with a projected increase in enrollment.

$482,770. Of this amount, $250,770 is budgeted for
purchase of new books, $15,000 for periodicals, and
$21,000 for binding and repair of books.
In the fall of 1918, around Thanksgiving, the Library was moved from the Preparatory School Building
into the new Cammack Building, occupying two large
rooms, with small rooms on either end, on the second
floor.

completion of the new building built to serve especially as a library - the John Grant Crabbe Library. Cost
of the cwo-story building, designed to accommodate
200 students, was $55,342. It contained 16 fireproof
rooms. The library holdings had grown from the
original 300 co 16,854.
In 1935, under the administration of President Herman Lee Donovan, an addition costing nearly twice as
much as the original structure was completed. The
John Grant Crabbe Library served Eastern's students from 811 enrolled in 1935 ro 6,949 enrolled in 1965
- until work was begun on the sprawling new StrL!Cture. Serving as temporary quarters during the 19month construction period were the first floor of the
Bert Combs Building and the basement of Case Hall,
a women's dormitory.
The first library policies were formulated by Miss
Mary Estelle Reid, Eastern's second librarian from
1912 to 1929. She wrote, in part:
A most essential f ctctor in the life of Eastern
State Teachers College is its library. It contribtttes to the efficiency of every department
of instruction. It is a place where every
mr:mber of the facttlty and every stttdent, to
the smallest p1,pil in the Training School,

may come for information and for recreational reading . ..
The library is not a mere ruljunct to the
school, bttt an integral part of the educational
system. .. Real students are no longer satisfied to follow mere textbooks in the investigc1tion of ,1 subject. . . The library reflects
in its collection and service the aims of the
institution of which it is a part, its development being influenced by that of the school,
which in turn is dependent upon the development of the library . . .
Third librarian was Miss Mary Floyd, who was appointed by President Donovan upon the death of Miss
Reid in 1929. Ir was during Miss Floyd's tenure as
librarian that the valuable John Wilson Townsend
Collection was secured for the Kentucky Room of the
Library.
Upon Miss Floyd's retirement in 1957, Mrs. Lucile
Whitehead was named acting librarian, a position she
held for one semester. In the summer of 195 7, Dick
M . A llen was named permanent successor to Miss
Floyd. Ernest W . Weyhrauch, who had served as education librarian in the Indiana University libraries
complex, was appointed Director of Libraries Dec. 1,
1966, by President Robert R. Martin.
lt has been nearly six decades since Ada Barter kept
the fire going in the old pot-bellied srove inside of
what had been a hayloft. But the fire of enlightenment
continues, sparked by an unquenching thirst for knowledge. It was with this same thirst that Eastern Kentucky State Norma] Schoo] grew into an ever-expanding university. And ir is with this sarne sense of pride
that the new castle of knowledge is dedicated on this
auspicious occasion.
