Parrish was born in Madison County, Kentucky 8n Jan 1914 to Norval Duerson Parrish and James Gordon Parrish. She had no siblings and never married. Virginia attended Model Laboratory School and Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College where she graduated in 1935. Virginia went on to teach, first at the high school level and then as a professor of French at Marshall University where she remained until she retired. Virginia's father, J. Gordon Parrish, was the son of Lyman Parrish and Minerva Davis Parrish. The Parrish's had one other child, a daughter named Mossie Parrish. Her mother was the daughter of John A. Duerson and Tabitha Crutcher Duerson. The other Duerson children were Annie, Alice, Lena, Jennie and Johnie, Jr. This collection contains mostly of genealogy research materials relating to the Parrish, Duerson, Cleveland, Crutcher, Phelps and Arnold families and photographs of the Parrish, Duerson, Bailey and Crutcher families to name but a few. Of note are class photos from Madison Female Institute and Model Laboratory School. Title A name given to the resource Wallace Family Papers Description An account of the resource Through correspondence, diaries, speeches, photographs, news clippings, and other primary source materials the public career and personal life of William Luxon Wallace and his family are documented. Glimpses of late nineteenth century Richmond, KY social and political life can be found in the correspondence of Wallace's father, Coleman Covington. In addition, due to Wallace's significance as an organizer in the Kentucky Republican Party, the collection sheds some light on the party's history during the first half of the twentieth century. It also contains political memorabilia which Wallace assembled along with a quantity of materials that document his World War I experience. The correspondence is mostly personal and covers Republican Party activities, World War I, and the proper behavior expected from young women of the 1920s. Other letters deal with various state and national elections. When Wallace served on the Eastern Kentucky University Board of Regents, the subject of the correspondence shifts to Eastern. The collection also includes several diaries from the women in the family, Wallace’s wife wrote over a span of 44 years; his sister wrote while she was at school in Louisville in the 1920s and there is one volume from his sister-in-law.<br /><br />Only a portion of this collection has been digitized. Title A name given to the resource Hanger Family Papers Description An account of the resource The Hanger Family papers came to Eastern Kentucky University from the Hanger family ancestral home, Arlington, when the University acquired the property in the late 1960s. The collection documents the Hanger family of Richmond, KY and their activities. The activities of Elizabeth Arnold Hanger Elliot are especially well documented through her scrapbooks. The correspondence in the collection touches on social customs and financial interests of an elite Central Kentucky Family. The family traveled widely and the children all attended boarding schools in the East and there are numerous records documenting this. Some material originallly acquired from Arlington were transferred to the Mason and Hanger Records as they were clearly business records. The family papers still include some scattered materials that are likely business records. The collection was divided into four series -- correspondence, financial, photograph albums and scrapbooks, and publications. Title A name given to the resource Kunkel/Million Family Papers Description An account of the resource The bulk of the Kunkel Family Papers was compiled by Mabel Kunkel and consists of educational essays she wrote or materials she collected to use in the classroom. There is some personal correspondence scattered through the collection as well. Collected materials cover a wide variety of topics across the entire state of Kentucky and consist of state reports, brochures, pamphlets and more. A manuscript about Thoroughbred horses and horse farms of the Bluegrass is also included. However, most materials collected for Mabel Kunkel's book on Abraham Lincoln are not included in this collection. The papers also include records from the Telford Community Center for the years 1937-1977 and include board minutes, financial records, donor records and other notes and documents.
