Van Peursem founded the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp in the midst of the Depression in 1936. Faced with a lack of experienced music students entering Eastern, he founded the camp to introduce students to music in the hope that they would then attend Eastern and study music education and therefore improve music programs in secondary schools.
