In 1929 he obtained a M.F. degree from the Yale Forest School of Yale University. After a stint in the military and other forestry related jobs he was assigned in 1953 as forest supervisor of the Cumberland National Forest (renamed Daniel Boone National Forest in the 1960s) in Kentucky. During his tenure the Forest Service successfully resisted the encroachment of strip miners in the forest and saw the rise of an active conservation movement in the region. Most of the materials in this collection relate to Mr. Collins' occupation as a United States Forest Service administrator. Of particular interest to the researcher is Collins' research notes and draft of his manuscript on The History of the Daniel Boone National Forest. In addition, there is information about pioneer Kentucky history and material about conservation and environmental issues in Kentucky during the last quarter of the 20th century. Lilly was born in Estill County on February 27, 1865. He was son of Colonel Henry Clay Lilly, a circuit judge of the Irvine district and a colonel in the 14th Kentucky Calvary, United States Army, during the Civil War, and Catherine Tracy, a member of a pioneer Pennsylvania family whose descendents moved to Kentucky. Anna Dudley McGinn Lilly was born on February 27, 1872, in Maysville, Kentucky, the daughter of the Reverend John Bolivar McGinn and Mary Elizabeth Sheppard McGinn. She spent her early life in Versailles, where her father was minister of the Christian church. On October 19, 1893, Grant E. Lilly and Anna D. McGinn were married in Versailles. They had one daughter, Austin Page, a son John Marion, and a younger son, Grant Lilly, Jr., who died at the age of 12 in 1916. The Lillys spent their formative years in Richmond where Mr. Lilly practiced law, engaged in numerous civic activities, and participated in several local political campaigns. Mrs. Lilly devoted considerable time to civic duties also, including affiliations with the Woman's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served as editor of the Kentucky Register newspaper and began to develop a strong allegiance to the Democratic Party. During the 1920's and 1930's the Lillys, having moved to Lexington, became more active in politics; especially Mrs. Lilly. She campaigned for women's political rights, civic reforms, and recognition of Kentucky's unique historical heritage. The collection also contains some information about Miss Austin Lilly's long tenure as a teacher in the Lexington public school system. Thus the Lilly Family Collection documents the contributions of a civic minded Central Kentucky family and also offers a glimpse into their personal lives. Parrish was born in Madison County, Kentucky 8n Jan 1914 to Norval Duerson Parrish and James Gordon Parrish. She had no siblings and never married. Virginia attended Model Laboratory School and Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College where she graduated in 1935. Virginia went on to teach, first at the high school level and then as a professor of French at Marshall University where she remained until she retired. Virginia's father, J. Gordon Parrish, was the son of Lyman Parrish and Minerva Davis Parrish. The Parrish's had one other child, a daughter named Mossie Parrish. Her mother was the daughter of John A. Duerson and Tabitha Crutcher Duerson. The other Duerson children were Annie, Alice, Lena, Jennie and Johnie, Jr. This collection contains mostly of genealogy research materials relating to the Parrish, Duerson, Cleveland, Crutcher, Phelps and Arnold families and photographs of the Parrish, Duerson, Bailey and Crutcher families to name but a few. Of note are class photos from Madison Female Institute and Model Laboratory School. With the exception of the photographs from France, they are very well identified and give a good look into the lives of typical young people in Richmond in the early 1900s. Bagby, ranging from the 1970's up to about 2008, though most are from the 1990s and early 2000s. Much of the collection is associated with Eastern Kentucky University, especially the athletics teams and the College of Justice and Safety, where Dr. Bagby taught. The collection also includes many news and public events in Richmond including the Glen Rogers hearing, Paul Patton's "Patton to the People" tour, Colin Powell's "America's Promise" tour, and the Harris-Scott-Stivers Memorial Dedication. Dr. Bagby also covered the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Blue Grass Army Depot. Dr. Bagby was a professor for EKU's College of Justice and Safety from 1972 to 1992 as well as a member of the Richmond chapter of the Rotary Club. He provided photos to the Richmond Register and other local news sources. Dr. Bagby passed away on August 17, 2011 at the age of 82 and is buried in Richmond Cemetery. Title A name given to the resource Bagby, Robert Photographs Description An account of the resource The photos in this collection were taken by Dr. Robert E. Bagby, ranging from the 1970's up to about 2008, though most are from the 1990s and early 2000s. Much of the collection is associated with Eastern Kentucky University, especially the athletics teams and the College of Justice and Safety, where Dr. Bagby taught. The collection also includes many news and public events in Richmond including the Glen Rogers hearing, Paul Patton's "Patton to the People" tour, Colin Powell's "America's Promise" tour, and the Harris-Scott-Stivers Memorial Dedication. Dr. Bagby also covered the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Blue Grass Army Depot. Dr. Bagby was a professor for EKU's College of Justice and Safety from 1972 to 1992 as well as a member of the Richmond chapter of the Rotary Club. He provided photos to the Richmond Register and other local news sources. Dr. Bagby passed away on August 17, 2011 at the age of 82 and is buried in Richmond Cemetery. Van Peursem founded the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp in the midst of the Depression in 1936. Faced with a lack of experienced music students entering Eastern, he founded the camp to introduce students to music in the hope that they would then attend Eastern and study music education and therefore improve music programs in secondary schools. Foster Music Camp continues to provide music education for middle and high school students every summer. Title A name given to the resource Bagby, Robert Photographs Description An account of the resource The photos in this collection were taken by Dr. Robert E. Bagby, ranging from the 1970's up to about 2008, though most are from the 1990s and early 2000s. Much of the collection is associated with Eastern Kentucky University, especially the athletics teams and the College of Justice and Safety, where Dr. Bagby taught. The collection also includes many news and public events in Richmond including the Glen Rogers hearing, Paul Patton's "Patton to the People" tour, Colin Powell's "America's Promise" tour, and the Harris-Scott-Stivers Memorial Dedication. Dr. Bagby also covered the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Blue Grass Army Depot. Dr. Bagby was a professor for EKU's College of Justice and Safety from 1972 to 1992 as well as a member of the Richmond chapter of the Rotary Club. He provided photos to the Richmond Register and other local news sources. Dr. Bagby passed away on August 17, 2011 at the age of 82 and is buried in Richmond Cemetery. Subjects include homecoming, classroom activities, student life and campus scenes. Most of the collection consists of 2x2 and 3x3 mounted slides, but also includes some film that was never mounted as well as some large format slides. The University seems to have used color transparencies for the color images that appeared at the front of the yearbook. Title A name given to the resource EKU Photographs Description An account of the resource The Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Photograph Collection consists of photographs and negatives of students, faculty, and events at EKU. Subjects range from individual faculty headshots and classroom pictures to commencement and candid everyday student life photos. Organizational pictures, shots of campus in general, athletics and other official photos taken from the university photographer are also included. Many of these images were taken for publication in marketing materials or for use in the school newspaper, yearbook and alumni magazines. The collection also includes snapshots taken by employees attending events. The collection may be used for all types of research, keeping in mind that individuals are often unidentified, so search broadly. All images available have been described here, but not all are scanned. Photographs with only a description can be requested by filling out a duplication request (see the link in the menu at the top of the page).
