Description An account of the resource Robert Foster Collins (1906-1999) was born in Lansing, Michigan to Frank Noble and Grace Foster Collins. He received his formal education in the public schools of southern Michigan and graduated with a B.S.F in 1928 from Michigan State University. In 1929 he obtained a M.F. degree from the Yale Forest School of Yale University. <br /><br />After a stint in the military and other forestry related jobs he was assigned in 1953 as forest supervisor of the Cumberland National Forest (renamed Daniel Boone National Forest in the 1960s) in Kentucky. During his tenure the Forest Service successfully resisted the encroachment of strip miners in the forest and saw the rise of an active conservation movement in the region. Most of the materials in this collection relate to Mr. Collins' occupation as a United States Forest Service administrator. Of particular interest to the researcher is Collins' research notes and draft of his manuscript on The History of the Daniel Boone National Forest. In addition, there is information about pioneer Kentucky history and material about conservation and environmental issues in Kentucky during the last quarter of the 20th century. Included is a large collection of color slides which Collins took of Winchester and Clark County historical sites and structures and of field and streams and flora and fauna of Kentucky. Subjects range from individual faculty headshots and classroom pictures to commencement and candid everyday student life photos. Organizational pictures, shots of campus in general, athletics and other official photos taken from the university photographer are also included. Many of these images were taken for publication in marketing materials or for use in the school newspaper, yearbook and alumni magazines. Lilly was born in Estill County on February 27, 1865. He was son of Colonel Henry Clay Lilly, a circuit judge of the Irvine district and a colonel in the 14th Kentucky Calvary, United States Army, during the Civil War, and Catherine Tracy, a member of a pioneer Pennsylvania family whose descendents moved to Kentucky. Anna Dudley McGinn Lilly was born on February 27, 1872, in Maysville, Kentucky, the daughter of the Reverend John Bolivar McGinn and Mary Elizabeth Sheppard McGinn. She spent her early life in Versailles, where her father was minister of the Christian church. On October 19, 1893, Grant E. Lilly and Anna D. McGinn were married in Versailles. They had one daughter, Austin Page, a son John Marion, and a younger son, Grant Lilly, Jr., who died at the age of 12 in 1916. The Lillys spent their formative years in Richmond where Mr. Lilly practiced law, engaged in numerous civic activities, and participated in several local political campaigns. Mrs. Lilly devoted considerable time to civic duties also, including affiliations with the Woman's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served as editor of the Kentucky Register newspaper and began to develop a strong allegiance to the Democratic Party. During the 1920's and 1930's the Lillys, having moved to Lexington, became more active in politics; especially Mrs. Lilly. She campaigned for women's political rights, civic reforms, and recognition of Kentucky's unique historical heritage. The collection also contains some information about Miss Austin Lilly's long tenure as a teacher in the Lexington public school system. Thus the Lilly Family Collection documents the contributions of a civic minded Central Kentucky family and also offers a glimpse into their personal lives. Description An account of the resource Robert Foster Collins (1906-1999) was born in Lansing, Michigan to Frank Noble and Grace Foster Collins. He received his formal education in the public schools of southern Michigan and graduated with a B.S.F in 1928 from Michigan State University. In 1929 he obtained a M.F. degree from the Yale Forest School of Yale University. <br /><br />After a stint in the military and other forestry related jobs he was assigned in 1953 as forest supervisor of the Cumberland National Forest (renamed Daniel Boone National Forest in the 1960s) in Kentucky. During his tenure the Forest Service successfully resisted the encroachment of strip miners in the forest and saw the rise of an active conservation movement in the region. Most of the materials in this collection relate to Mr. Collins' occupation as a United States Forest Service administrator. Of particular interest to the researcher is Collins' research notes and draft of his manuscript on The History of the Daniel Boone National Forest. In addition, there is information about pioneer Kentucky history and material about conservation and environmental issues in Kentucky during the last quarter of the 20th century. Title A name given to the resource Clay, Green Papers Description An account of the resource Green Clay was born at White Hall on 11 August 1871 and was named Guy Ephrium Herrick. He was the son of John Frank and Mary Clay Herrick. Mary Clay was the oldest daughter of Cassius M. Clay, the "Lion of White Hall." When his parents divorced his mother began calling him Green Clay and at her insistence he changed his name to Green Clay after he reached 21. Green attended school in Richmond and high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a student at the University of Michigan for two years, Central University for two years, and graduated from Columbia College in Washington, DC with the LL.B. degree in 1893. He practiced law in Richmond and Cincinnati. <br /><br />He began working in the newspaper business sometime after 1900 and worked for papers in Ohio, New York, Richmond and Tennessee. He also wrote numerous articles and pamphlets about the history of Richmond and Madison County and worked for the WPA supervising the indexing of court records. He also worked as city clerk, purchasing agent and auditor of Richmond. <br /><br />The strength of the Green Clay collection is the photographs, which were mostly taken in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Although there are some portraits, there are also many photos of Madison county, including historic sites, river scenes, historic homes and even a moonshine still. Description An account of the resource Robert Foster Collins (1906-1999) was born in Lansing, Michigan to Frank Noble and Grace Foster Collins. He received his formal education in the public schools of southern Michigan and graduated with a B.S.F in 1928 from Michigan State University. In 1929 he obtained a M.F. degree from the Yale Forest School of Yale University. <br /><br />After a stint in the military and other forestry related jobs he was assigned in 1953 as forest supervisor of the Cumberland National Forest (renamed Daniel Boone National Forest in the 1960s) in Kentucky. During his tenure the Forest Service successfully resisted the encroachment of strip miners in the forest and saw the rise of an active conservation movement in the region. Most of the materials in this collection relate to Mr. Collins' occupation as a United States Forest Service administrator. Of particular interest to the researcher is Collins' research notes and draft of his manuscript on The History of the Daniel Boone National Forest. In addition, there is information about pioneer Kentucky history and material about conservation and environmental issues in Kentucky during the last quarter of the 20th century. Included is a large collection of color slides which Collins took of Winchester and Clark County historical sites and structures and of field and streams and flora and fauna of Kentucky. The papers also contain information about weapons a favorite subject of Collins. <br /><br />Only a portion of this collection has been digitized.
