I’ll tell you a little story that comes from a man who’s way up on Lion Fork. I mean this concerns, this is another sort of fiddle story. Mannon Campbell told this story, he was 86 when I visited him, he lived up on Lion Fork, which, ok, that runs into the North Fork of the Kentucky River, right? It is a tributary of it I’m pretty sure. Bill Ellis: Was this in Perry County? Harrod: No, this was in Letcher County. Yeah, this was on the same road that goes up to Willie’s Woods. If you’ve ever been up there. But, uh, Mannon Campbell had this tune he played that he called Cold Harbor Bend. He said that was named after a bend in the river. I have a map, an old bargeman’s map of the river and I couldn’t find any place called Cold Harbor Bend. But, this could have been, ya know the name might have disappeared or it might have not come up on the map because there haven’t been a whole lot of barge traffic on the upper part of the river. But, um, Mannon Campbell tells this story of how, how that tune got its name. These men were going down, they were rafting down the river, and it was I guess a log raft and it was night and, uh, it was dark on the river but I guess they could see enough to keep going. But they were going down the river and they heard a big square dance that sounded like it was going on in this cabin on the bank. Fiddler was playing some kind a tune and everybody seemed to be having a good time. They floated on a ways and before long they came to another square dance. The fiddler, he was a pretty good fiddler. Then they floated on a while and they came to another one and one of them noticed, “well, seems like everybody, every house in this country is having a square dance.” And somebody else said, “Yeah, by God and it sounds like the fiddler is playing the same tune too, every house in this country…what about that.” So they kept on all night, all night long that kept happening. The next morning, the sun came up and they noticed they were just in a big whirlpool right there, and just going around in a big circle. The name of that place was called Cold Harbor Bend. [inaudible] He played a tune by that name. Maybe you can find out where Cold Harbor Bend is?
