Board of Regents meeting
22 February 2019
Submitted by Matthew Winslow

EKU Forward
I reported to the Board in September that we were instituting a new agenda item at Faculty
Senate meetings that we call EKU Forward during which we solicit ideas to improve EKU that
conform to two guidelines: that the idea is within the purview of faculty, and that the budget
situation is taken into account. While we have received a few valuable suggestions, in general
this initiative has not generated the energy and innovation we hoped for. Following the
February Senate meeting Provost Pogatshnik and Dean Zeigler (both members of the Senate)
suggested that we change the format for EKU Forward to a less formal and smaller group
session, outside of Senate meetings. We thought this was an excellent idea and so we have
scheduled 1-hour meetings on five Mondays during the Spring Semester, and divided the
Senate membership evenly among them. Provost Pogatshnik, Dean Zeigler, Senate Vice Chair
Ciocca and myself will attend each meeting. These meetings are open to the public and we will
conform to open meetings guidelines. We hope these changes will result in more suggestions
and also bridge the divide between the faculty and administration.

Faculty Regent Election
As you know, Faculty Regent Day's term ends this spring, and he has chosen not to run for reelection. The Faculty Senate Elections and Nominations Committee is administering the process
for electing a new Faculty Regent. We have three candidates for the position, Dr. Richard
Crosby from School of Music, CLASS; Dr. Zekeriya Eser, from the Finance Program, College of
Business; and Dr. Jason Marion, from the Department of Environmental Health, College of
Health Sciences. Open forums were held this week on Tuesday and Wednesday and voting
began on Thursday and runs until next Friday. Should a run-off be necessary (one candidate
must receive more than 50% of the vote), it will take place between March 18 and 29. I will
inform the Board of the identity of the new Faculty Regent as soon as the results are verified by
the Elections and Nominations Committee.

Chair Diaz to address Faculty Senate
Thanks to Chair Diaz for agreeing to address the Faculty Senate at our March 4 meeting . I
believe a closer working relationship between the Board and the Faculty will benefit both
parties, and EKU as a whole.

Child Care Link to the Economy
■

Access to affordable child care increases labor force
participation and supports state and local economic
growth

■

Access to affordable child care supports parents
seeking additional education and training, which
contributes to higher earnings over an individual's
lifetime

■

Increased subsidy payment trigger state level responses
in wage rates, the mix of low- and high-skilled labor
used in the state, process of goods and services, and
access to quality program for children

Committee for Economic Development 2019 Update

Quality Child Care Matters
■

Quality child care is essential to the safety and healthy
development of children, particularly in the school
readiness of low-income children. In the U.S., 20.3% of
children under age 5 live in poverty. (25 .2% in KY)

■

Child care is not just a key work support for parents,
but it is also critical for the healthy development of
children which prepares them for school.

■

Child care as an industry has an economic impact on
states-for example, in the U.S. industry revenue
combined with additional spending have a $99.3 billion
impact on state economies ($939 million in KY)
