UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

AREA CODE: 606
TEL .: 257 - 2830

As Vice-Chairman of the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate
Conference, I have been charged to appoint Sports Chairman
for the various sports. Since this is an initial group, I
have also taken the liberty to write up a job description
which is enclosed. I would welcome any suggestions on additions or deletions. If none are forthcoming from you, I
will propose this list at our spring meeting in Danville.
The following are the sports and people I hope will
accept the job as Sports Chairman:
Basketball - Rita Pritchell - Asbury
Field Hockey - Barbara Call - U.K.
Gymnastics - Sharron Demossey - U. of L.
Tennis - Martha Mullins - E.K . U.
Track & Field - Eva Bushman - Berea
Volleyball - Nan Ward - Murray

It was proposed in board meeting that a fee of $1.00
be charged to cover postage and the cost of duplicating
materials you would send out.

I hope that you can find the time to take on this
responsibility.
As KWIC grows, I think we will be of valuable service .
Please give me your reply as quickly as possible.

Hope to see you at the spring meeting.

**** Yeah, Yeah, Yeah · ••• • ••

It i s a pl e asure t o bring t he f ollowi ng announcement to your attention :
EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY HAS PLACED FIRST IN:
--THE SOUTHERN REGI ON II VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP . --

Eastern faced unbe lievabl e odds in c l aiming their first Regional t itle.
U.T . defeated E. K.U. i n t hei r opening match two straight games. Then,
the Maroons went t o wor k . East Mennonite was thumped 2 straight .
Along cam~ u. Nor th Carol ina who trie d in vain to put a damper on
the 'Big E! ' U. N. C. grabbed t he f irst game 15-13, but E. K.U . t ook t he
l ast two 16-14, 15-3 . Coker, South Car olina, was Eastern 's next
opponent, but they did little damage t o E. K.U. and went out in t wo.
Memphis State almost upset Eas tern ' s "Apple 'oops ' , 'volleyball ' ca~t ! "
State claimed the 1st. game 15- 8. Bu.t E.K. Uk scrappiness a ud c onfidence
prevailed a s they came ba ck very s trong 15-9, 16-14 t o defeat M.s .u.
and move into the finals . Wint hrop College provided l ittle challe nge
t o Easter n . Eastern t oppled the North Carolina girls 15-1~ and 15-3
respectively .
And so, congr a tul a tions are ce~tainly i n order to Eastern and thei r fine
t eam and equally f ine coa ch , Dr . Geri Polvino.
A PARTING NOTE

Geri 's v i c t ories have fille d c ount less scorebooks. She has coached
Eastern ':<> consecutive s t ate t i t les and now a regional c rown .
I t is e asy to applaude a s Eastern ' s fine recor d passes in reviewo And
i t is e asy to deposit . this memo in the waste basket after scanning
i ts contents . But, it will be e ven easier to overlook the s i gnifica nce
of Kentucky ' s fir st - Reg ional t itle . I t has come e arly in r egiona l
organization a nd Eastern has ' brought home ' an early morning catch ' to
r est in Ke ntucky . We, Kentucky , c anriot pass this title off as any
"flash i n the pan" vi ctory. Geri's t e ams exhibit the one true measure
of champi ons •• •• • a nd that measure is c onsistency.

Pethaps after we get more expierenced we could

I hope you 've had a nice sununer. Stop over and

LEXINGTON . KENTUCKY 40!506

August 28, 1972

Dear Coaches & Instructors:

Welcome back for another fun filled school year.
As the hockey sports chairman for KWIC I encourage
you and your students to attend the hockey workshop.
Sue has spent many hours in the planning stages of the
clinic. Having myself been a participant at Valley
Farm this summer I can attest to the high level of
play that can be inspired by the clinicians.
Valley Farm will hold its college weekends
October 6th - 8th and 13th - 15th. If you haven't
received information you may write:

l

The Schaefers
Valley Farm
Brooklyn, Michigan 49230

Another reminder: The 1972 AIAW State Field
Hockey Tournament will be held at U.K. on October
27th, 28th &29th.
We hope to see you at both. The workshop and
the tournament.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

Evidently there has been a mix up on our fees for
the state Volleyball tournament. U.K. did not receive
an entry until the day the tournament began (neither did
Georgetown). A purchase order was sent to Murray but
they failed to send a requisition. A follow up letter
was also sent to Murray requesting they forward a requisition
to us for the money.
I am enclosing a purchase order number (250171).
Please send this number back to us with a statement that
it is for entry fees.
Thank you for bringing ~this t9 my t attennion.
Sincerely yours,

Susan B. Feamster
Asst. Director, Campus Recreation
SBF / cm
Enclosure

P.S. The entry fees for the Basketball tournament are being
made out to KWIC treasury. See you on the 20th.

Dear Ms. Mullins:

OEOROE W . GOWEN
OCNC:fllAL COUNSEL

Skip Hartman referred your letter of February 12th to my attention.
Enclosed is a copy of the tennis tournaments for college women that was just
sent to tne by NaneHen Lane.
As far as the ones in your area are concerned, I would suggest that you write
to Nanellen directly: Miss Nanellen Lane, 2050 Memorial Coliseum, Auburn
University, Auburn, Alabama 36830, as well as to the USLTA Women's Collegiate
Committee: Mrs. Monroe C. Lewis, 6805 Washington Boulevard, St. Louis,
Missouri 63160.
Another very knowledgeable person about women's college tennis tournaments
is Mrs. Lois Blackburn, Department of Physical Education, Mary Baldwin Coliege,
Staunton, Virginia.
If there is anything we can do to be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

function best to review with you the responsibilities of the chairman of
KWIC • At some tilne I would like to borrow this file and zerox some of
the material for my own use.
Several things re.main to be done.

Three of the most urgent are:

l. Appointment of a policies and procedures committee and
chainnan
2. Appointment of tournament guideline committee.and
chairman
J. Pl8¥?lg for a early fall KWIC meeting where policies
can be discussed and schedules confirmed. (Jlany
people have urged the newly appointed committes
function prior to this fall meeting.)

As I locate additional .materials which might help you with the office,
I 11 send them to you. I 1 11 be off to Europe from May 29 to July 13 t hen
visiting with family until August 1. I'll probably return to Richmond
sometime after August 1. If you have any questions;. don't hesitate to
contact me.
Also enclosed with the minutes are:

1. A copy of AIAW handbook
2. A copy of OOWS Philosophy and Standards
3. A revised scholarship statement

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSIT Y

I received this form with no cover l etter , so I aTl'\ at a loss as
to where to return it. Our check for annual dues should have been
mailed on or about 9/28 , according to the memorandum I received from
our purchasing department . If it has not been receive d by now , please
let me know .
Will the minutes of the las t KWIC meeting be mailed out? The
meeting fell on the day of all our major faculty meetings prior to
fall semester , therefore none of us could attend . We would appreciate
being brought up to date , however .

CENTI{E COLI.EGE OF KENTUCKY

November 1,1973

November 16 and the Fall meeting of KWIC is almost
here. Since we are limited to approximately one hour
for the meeting, we need an agenda tha t will get the
job done without unnecessary delay. Some of the items
that I have in mind are:
Election of Officers
Report from AIAW meeting in Kansas
Report from Tournament Directors
Tennis - Pat Deacon
Tennis - Dew Drop Rowlette
Hockey - Joy Hager
Volleyball - Paula Welch
Policies and Procedures Committee Report
(Limited)
I know there are other items, but these are suggestions.
Please send me your list. I .also need sugg estions for
priorities if the list is too l ong.

state volleyball tournament at Eastern on Sat ur day ,
No vember 10th. The final game 1tar t s at 11:00. We'll

an opportunit~ to make any l ns t minu te plans.
If you cannot attend the meeting on the 10th or 16th
ple r se let me know. I s~all 1, ok forward to seeing you .

Centre Gollege
July 5, 1974

I have made reservations for two 2-bedro0m cotta~es at Lake
Cumberland, September 6-8, 1974. Each cottage will sleep 8.
At present, we have eleven pe~ple who wish tJ stay in a cottase.
I believe that six per cottage would be c~mfortable. If we
have more than 12, perha?S we shJuld reserve a third cottage.
Is this ag~e eable with everyone? 'The cottages are $32 .00 oer
night for four (plus tax), and two dollars for each additional
person. This includes 2 bedrooms, a living r omm, kitchen, bath,
telephone, T.V., and air conditioning. I have paid[ £or one night
in advance to hold the r eservations.

I have a meeting r~om · r es erved at ~he lodge on Saturday. On
Friday night, perhaps we could have our meeting around a campfire.
Would you like to make Ftiday night a we~nner roast or picnic
ar 1und a campfire? Any suggestions??
On Sunday, we can meet~ a ma
outside or in one of your cottages. Okay?
I hope that you're having a good summer.
Sincerely,

-(;a;_

Kitty ~aird

Sould we make dinner reservations at the Lodge f~r Saturday night
or let everyone take care of own pers onal plans?

I first want to apologize for the delay in compiling the minutes of the
Fall Conference. There's no excuse for them not being to you before.this
date. They're just late and no ones fault but mine.
You will find enclosed sets of minutes.
Agenda.

Each set corresponds to the

To bring you up to date on some of the significant changes for 1975-76
please take note. These are not in order, just some thoughts~ that might
make the minutes easier to decipher as they were taken by appointed recorders.

a. Fall Conference to Fall Meeting
b. KAHPER Convention to Winter Meeting (last Friday in January)
c. Spring Meeting to 2nd Friday in April
Please NOTE ·- There will be no official business meeting at ·KAHPER.
However there is time reserved for KWIC to hold committee meetings, spe~:rtaL:~
programs, etc. This year the time is: SAT. NOV. 15th 3-4:15 p.m. Cincinnati
Room, Ramada Inn, Louisville. (After receiving numerous requests to cancel
this years program-I have done so. There will not be an official meeting
but you may come together at 3-4:15 p.m. to discuss or say Hi.
·

(

The next official meeting is Friday, January 30th . at Eli zabethtown, _You
should begi.n thinking about nominees for next years' officers- Vice President
and Secretary. The board will .meet in November or December to prepare agenda

Many changes have occurred in educational athletics over the
years. Some of the most dramatic ones recently have involved
women and athletics.
Since the late •6o•s, the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate
Conference has been working to define a place for women in
athletics in post-secondary education. It is the official state
conference recognized by the Association for Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women. Through the KWIC junior college women have
access to AIAWregional and national championship tournaments.
However, the primary benefit derived from KWIC membership is
association with other schools in Kentucky who are fostering
sound, salient athletic programs for women as wello
Enclosed is a copy of the 1975-76 Report to the Conference,
mailed to the membership this month. Participation f igures
depict the more practical accomplishments of t he association
and its eighteen member schools.
A membership application is included.

We encourage your
school to join the KWICo Any off i cer will be happy to answer
questions or provide f urther information about the Conference
if contacted o

KENTUCKY WCJvfEN'S INTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE

Expanded interest in intercollegiate athletics i n Kentucky led to the
appointment of a committee to study the trend . The committee was appointed
by the Chairperson of the Kentucky Division of Girls and Womens Sports. It
met for the first time December 2, 1967. The purposes were to develop
state guidelines and policies for the development of i ntercollegiate programs for college women. Representatives from nine institutions attended
this first meeting. One year later a fundamental precept emergeds
"The Committee feels that there can be no j us tification
for intercollegiate competition unless i t affords the
participant an opportunity for development i n all aspects,
not skill alone. Focus should be on t he development of
players, not the building of records. "
The continued growth generated by the Committ ee l ed to structural and
name changes. In 1970, the first fonnal operating code was passed and the
Committee was changed to the Kentucky Women•s I nter collegiate Conference.
The first state tournament was conducted in 1971. Today state
tournaments are organized in six sports. Kentucky participated in the
first AIAW regional tournament i n 1972 and national tournament s in 1972.
KWIC today dedicates itself to governing women's intercollegiate
sports competition in Kentucky. Women hold key roles in car rying out
this challenge.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
ELIZABETHTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
ELIZABETHTOWN , KY 42701

August 13, 1976

I appreciate your invitation for Elizabethtown C ommunity Co ll ege to j oin
KWIC. We are interested in doing this. Howeve r, we will wait until after
our fall registration so that we can determine whether or not we w ill have
a girls' bask e tball t eam. I do not think we will have any invo l vement with
other activiti es because we have no full-time physical education teachers ,
or coaches . We offer interscho l astic ba ske tba ll for both sexes , and will
use part -time coaches .
I assume that if we join KWIC we w ill be e ligib le to compete with the senior
co llege memb e r s of your conference. Please advise about this, and send
any materials you have which govern t he conduct of KWIC basketball.
