I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend Debbie
Chilcott as an addition to your tennis program . I have
coached and trained her since her junior year in high school
and can assure you that she is a top level competitor. I
personally feel she is capable of performing at the high
level of competition provided by NCAA Division I schools.
She is one of the most outstanding athletes I have ever
coached who works very hard and learns very fast. She can
adapt her style of play , a strong baseline game or a more
attacking game , to whatever the situation calls for with
better than average success.
Debbie has been my number one player since coming to
Mercyhurst College and is the key to the sudden success of
our women' s program. She is a team leader both on and off
the court. I offer my highest recommendation that you give
her the opportunity to be come an outstanding addition to
your tennis program. If you need any more information feel
free to call me at (814)-868-9617.

If one looks at he r resume , howe ver , the "good

While play ing fo r her dollege team she lost only
two match es ( 4- 6 , 4- 6) ( 6- 7 , 4- 6 ) of the 25 played .
These tw o losses c ame to the same girl , Arny Stray er ,
a top rated Fl oridian who came t o Erie only t wo

Debbie is a scholar(3 . 75 average) , a nd the

To Whom It May Concern,

February 8, 1980

I •ve had the pleasure of knowing Debbie Chilcott for
many years. We lived in the same community and being a playground supervisor and tennis instructor. I spent quite a
bit of time with Debbie as she grew up.
As an athlete, Debbie has excelled in the state of
Pennsylvania in any sport she participated in, notably tennis and basketball. Her record spea ks for itself. Perhaps
more important are the traits of her character in which she
truly excels. The •old fashioned" ideals of dedication,
hard work, honesty are personified in Debbie.

I began coaching Debbie when she was -in seventh grade
and was impressed then as I still am with her. It ' s rare
for anyone to be a "star" in every area of her life, but
Debbie is that kind of person • . She would be a definite asset
to any team or institution she became a part of.
Today the trend is as it once was with the "golden
Greeks", toward developing a well rounded institution or a
well rounded individual. Debbie is already that type of
individual and I highly recommend her for your institution.
Sincerely yours,

:(id~

I am from Fairfax , Virginia and presently enrolled i n
my second year at Western Carolina University studying
Criminal Justice . I am looking to trarsfer , possibly
as early as the second semester of this year , to a
school with a more developed program that also offers
my specialization which is juveni 1 e cor rections . Hence ,
Eastern Kentucky is a good possibility .
I am on a basketball scholarship at Western , and am interested in continuing my basketball career throughout
college . Back in 1979 , I was accepted at EKU , and was
also a candidate for scholarship under Shirley Duncan .
However , I w~s given a bett~r offer at Western .
Since then , I have changed my major from Physical Education
to Criminal Justice . I would appreciate it if you could
send me information on your basketball program . I will
be happy to send my final statistics from t he past 1979-80
season and any of the upcoming stats as the season progresses . Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon .
Sincerely ,

Meredith Thompson
