The University of Nebraska at Omaha
Box 688 Omaha, Nebraska 68101

September 15, 1975

You probably read in the ATAW minutes that a committee is to be set up to
establish a co- sponsored national fast pitch softball tournament with the .Amateur
Softball Association. Since I am chairwoman of this committee, whose members have
not yet been appointed, I would like to have reactions from your region. Since I
do not believe in doing everything at the last minute, Charlotte West and I have
talked about having such a tournament in the Spring of 1977. By doing this we
hope to be able to give the regions time to plan for a regional softball tournament
in the Spring of 1977.
It would be very helpful if you would let me know if there is enough interest
in your region to have a tournament. If not, how will you decide on the representative from your region? What dates would you suggest for a regional tournament and
the national tournament? Do you have any feelings on how teams at large should be
selected? Do you foresee any major problems in having a regional softball tournament?
Any other comments or questions you have would be appreciated.

I certainly
hope you will have time to discuss this at your next regional meeting. For the
time being I assume this will be for both small and large colleges . The JC/CC will
be having their own tournament starting next year.
Since we have set 1977 as our goal, next year Omaha will again host the Women ' s
College World Series (WCWS). The dates will be May 13-16 and this tournament is recognized by AJ.AW. As in most cases our biggest problem is getting the word out to
all schools (active AIAW members) telling them about the tournament . Since we do not
have regional tournaments we go with one representative from each State . This representative is usually the State Champion. It is entirely up to each State to determine who
will comeo Therefore, we never have a set number of teams entering this tournament,
which causes many organizational problems . Every year we have schools wanting to enter
the tournament, but they are too late. This is all because of communication problems .
If you could please get the word out to all the States that if anyone is interested
in this tournament to contact me by March 1, 1976 . After March 1 infonnation will be
sent out to all schools that have indicated an interest in attending.
With your help I hope we can cut down on the communication problem. It would
also be helpful to find out what States in your region already have State tournaments
and the name and address of the director. If they don ' t have State tournaments, will
they by the Spring of 1977?

I realize I have asked many questions and that you are very busy and have
a million things to cover in your regional meeting. Therefore , I have tried to
make it easier for you by enclosing the following form .

This letter is being sent to both the small college and large college representatives, since I really didn ' t know if you have separate meetings . I certainly
don't want to leave anyone out.

November 13, 1975

Sorry to be so long with this reply, but I had to move
my office and advise 29 seniors all in the scope of four
days, so I have been swamped.
As to my reaction on the softball letter, we do and have
had a softball state tournament . We may have some interest
in a regional tournament. We have sent teams to Omaha for
a few years as well . Teams-at-large? I guess float so many
per region or give invitations. Major problems--I really
do not know.
As to the tournament dates, sites, and directors, I am including
them under seperate heading (see attached sheet).
I meant to get this to you before Bert left for her stint as
as a regional field hockey coach ! Hope she had a great time.
Hope the house is coming as planned.
time soon .
Sincerely,

&·~

Dianne

Will see you as some

Dear Athletic Director:

We have asked your sports information department to send us
information on your women's varsity swimning team.

We are in-

terested in pictures, 1973 results, opponents scheduled in 1974
and biographical information on outstanding competitors.

This material is needed to prepare publicity for the 1974

.

AIAW National Swi[IIJling and Diving Championship.

Our news re-

leases to national and local media will begin just as soon ss
we receive information from participating schools .

Any help you can give us in this matter would be appreciated.
Sincerely,

rn°'::J~~
