0BPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND RECREATION

To:

Regional Qualifying Tournament Directors

From :

Louise O' Neal, Coaches' Representative on National Basketball CollUllittee

SELECTION , EVALUATION, AND ASSIGNMENT OF OFFICIALS FOR FIRST ROUND PLAYOFFS,
SEMIFINALS, AND FINALS OF THE AIAW LARGE COLLEGE
NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The National Basketball Committee has proposed the following method for
selecting, evaluating, and assigning officials for the First Round Playoffs, the
Semifinals, and Finals of the AIAW Large College National Basketball Championship:
1.

Participating coaches at regional tournaments will evaluate officials
and, together as a group, vote for the most qualified and best
officials at the tournament . They will do this by placing the
off i cials in rank order (1,2,3, etc.) based on a ~ili ty, competence,
and qualifications.
If in the opinion of the coaches there a r e no qualified officials,
none should be recommended. Ties in ranks should be reported as such.

2.

3.

4.

The final ranking of officials by the coaches should be written
and signed by the coaches and given to the Regional Tournament
Director.
The Regional Tournament Director must call the AIAW Selection and
Assignment Chairperson and give the rankings no later than 3:00 P.M . ,
Eastern Standard Time, on Sunday, March 12. The written and signed
rankings should be sent by mail to the chairperson on March 12 also.
Louise Albrecht
Chairperson, Selection and Assignment CollUllittee
200 Candlewood Road , Stratford , Connecticut 06497
1-203-377-4405

The Selection and Assignment Committee will deliberate and make
final assignments for the four First Round Playoffs based on its
own evaluation procedures and the above i nput from r egional participating coaches.
It is intended that regional coaches ' i uput be considered in the
selection and assignment process for the First Round Playoff s on
the following basis:

When coaches' evaluation is high and Selection and
Assignment Committee evaluation is high, the official
would be assigned for First Round Playoffs.

b.

When coaches' evaluation is low and the Selection and
Assignment Committee evaluation is low, the official
would not be assigned for First Round Playoffs.

c.

When coaches' evaluation is low and the Selection and
Assignment Committee evaluation ls high, the official
would only be assigned if needed.

d.

When coaches' evaluation is high and the Selection and
Assignment Conllllittee evaluation is low, the official
would only be assigned if needed.

e.

When coaches' evaluation is in the middle, and the
Selection and Assignment Committee evaluation is low,
the official would be placed in a low position for
assignment.

f,

When coaches' evaluation is low and the Selection and
Assignment Committee evaluation is middle, the official
would be placed in a low position for assignment.

g.

When coaches' evaluation is in the middle , and the
Selec tion and Assignment Committee evaluation is middle,
the official would be placed in a middle position for
assignment .

First Round Playoff sites. They will solicit input from the
participating coaches at each site.

The AIAW Selection and Assignment Committee will then assign
officials for the semifinals and finals based on these rankings.

It is important that you include the above information in mailings to
all basketball coaches in your region. If coaches are to have input to selection
of officials for the National Championships, it will have to be done at the
regional level.
It is the concern of the National Basketball Conunittee that coaches
have an opportunity for addressing their concerns regarding the caliber of
officiating . This ranking by the participating coaches is being done with the
hope that the best officials will be found and brought to the attention of the
AIAW Selection and Assignment Committee.

on lts SportsWorld program on Sunday afternoo n, March 26 , The

There are some tremendous match -ups this weekend.

first ro u nd game wi ll pit Tennessee against Maryland ,

Th e top
Tennessee is

the No.

l

ranked team in the country and the favorite for the AIAW

title.

Maryland has been ranked in the top 10 all season and

the Terps are very capable of winning everything .

The winn er

of the Maryland-Tennessee game should play the North Carolina
Charlotte of women's basketball, Valdosta State.

North Carolina Charlotte was the surprise of NCAA basketball last
year when the team reached the final four before losing to 1977 NCAA
champion Marquette and Valdosta State could also reach the final four.
Region 3 Runner-up Mississippi and Region lA Champion Queens
College should also be a tough first round game .

The winner of

the 11ississippi-Queens game should play Montclair State in the
finals for the berth to Pauley Pavilion.

Region 4 Champion Wayland Baptist and Region 2 Runner-up North
Carolina State should be the final game pairing in the Central
area .

The two teams met at North Carolina State earlier in the

season with State winning, 98-86, but this game will be in Ttxas.
It shou ld be a Stephen F . Austin-UCLA finnl in the West in a
rematch of an earlier season game, which the Bruins won, 85-74 .
Stephen F. Austin has played the tougher sc hedule, plus the victory
over Louisiana State makes the game almost a toss-up .

Tickets for the games at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion are on sale at
all Mutual Ticket Agencies, UCLA's Kerckhoff Hall and Pacific Stereo
at 637 So . Hill Street .

Tickets are priced at $5 for arena level

and center section concourse and $4 and $3 for adult and student
general admission respectively .
