Eastern Kentucky
University
Eastern Kentucky University is a
regional coeducationa l public institution of higher education offering
general and liberal arts programs, preprofessional and professional training in
education and various other fields at
both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Located in Ric hmond. Eastern
has a distinguished record of more than
seven decades of educational service to
th e Commonwea lth.
Eastern was established in 1906.
The campus of the old Central University, founded in 1874, was selected the
site of the new school.
In 1922, Eastern became a four-year
institution known as the Eastern
Kentucky State Normal School and
Teachers College.
In 1935, a graduate program was
approved at Eastern, leading to the
Master o f Arts in Education. In 1948, the
Genera l Assembly removed the word

"Teachers" from the name of th e College
and granted the College the right to
award non-professio nal degrees.
The most sig nificant day since its
founding came for Eastern February 26,
1966, when G overno r Edward T.
Breathitt signed in to law a bill renaming
the institution Eastern Kentucky University and sanctioning the awarding of
graduate degrees in academic fields
othe r than ed ucation.
Ever-m indful of the purpose of its
founding, Eastern continues to recognize its historic funct ion of preparing
quality teachers for the elementary and
secondary schools of the Commonwealth. However, a strong liberal arts
curric ulum leading to appropriate
degrees, together with p re-professional
courses in several areas and graduate
programs, enable Eastern to uniquely
serve the Commonwealth as a regional
university.

academic colleges and graduate school
inc l uding education, allied health and
nursing, computer science, business,
sciences . law enforcement, recreation,
and environmental resources that provide educational opportunit ies to meet
society's demands.
The University seeks to fu lfill the
"livin g-while-learning" concept by providing comfortable living conditions for
almost 7,000 students in campus

residence halls. Eastern can accommodate mo re students on campus than
any other university in the state.
I n addition to being a highly
respected academic institution, Eastern
is also noted for its program of intercollegiate athletics and recreational
