The EKU campus is one of the most scenic college campuses in the nation and features several striking buildings. From the James E. Van Peursem Music Pavilion and the Ravine, to the Chapel of Meditation and the Keen Johnson Building, EKU c laims some of the most diverse and attractive locales on any college campus. However strong Eastern Kentucky's reputation is for its visual aesthetics, the real character of the University can be found in its students, facu lty and staff, and outstanding academic programs. The University, which is set t o celebrate its centennial in 2006, had humble beginnings. However, modern-day EKU now encompasses three branch campuses in Corbin, Danville, and Manchester. The Universit y also boasts one of the state's strongest distance learning programs, giving students from around the world an opportunity to receive an EKU education. EKU is also home to the College of Justice and Safety, which educates students from around the world . As EKU's Program of Distinction, the College of Justice and Safety is involved in numerous worldwide research projects. In addition, it also educates a vast majority of the law enforcement officers in the Commonwealth . The University also boasts 17 varsity sports at the NCAA Division I level, competing in the Ohio Valley Conference. EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSllY �2006 COLONEL SOFTBALL THIS IS EASTERN KENTUCKY S OFTBALL * Since the program started in 1 992 , t he Colonels have recorded an overal l mark of 367-327 w ith six w in ning seasons . * Eastern Kentucky made its first t rip t o the NCAA Tournament in 2002 after capturing it s f irst OVC championship. The top-seeded Colonels held off # 2 seed Ten nessee Tech for t he t itle . Four Colonels were named to t he A ll-Tou rnament Team and pitcher J onelle Csora earned MVP ho nors. * The Colonels returned to the NCAA T ournament in 2004 following their second conference championship . Eastern ea rned the # 1 seed in the leag ue tou rnament after posting a school-reco rd 22 w ins in conference play . * Three Eastern Kentucky players have been honored as t he Ohio Valley Conference Player of Year and two players have earned Pitche r of the Year recognition . In additio n, four freshmen have received Freshman of the Year hono rs. * Head coach Jane Worthington has spent 13 years at the helm of the Colone ls softball p rogram . She has been named OV C Coach of the Yea r t w o t imes. * During the 2002 season, the Colonels ended the season highly ranked in several national statistical categories. J ennifer Norris f in ished 16th in RBI per game (.8 9) w hile Kel li Bromley w as t he 16t h Toughest Player to St ri keout (.041) . * The Colo nels have received 58 All-Conference recognitions throughout their history . In 2002, a school-record five players earned First Tea m honors while t w o players were named to t he Second Team and one player received hono rable mention honors . EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSl1Y �2006 COLONEL SOFTBALL The SAAS Center, t he Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center, is one of t he newer facilities on EKU's campus and is competitive w ith t he top academic support facilities in the nation . Locat ed in Alumni Coliseum, the SAAS Center is d esignated to aid Eastern Kentucky student-ath let es in all facets of t heir academic pursuits. Former EKU All-American footbal l player and 11 -year National Football League veteran Chad Bratzke was instrumenta l in furni shing the center w ith his generous gift to Eastern Kent ucky at hleti cs. Included in the academic facility are tutoring stations , quiet study areas, a computer lab and administrative offices. Within the SAAS Center, student-at hletes are provided academic support, guidance in class registration, su pervised study tables, access to computers, and intense t utoring in all subj ect areas . The SAASC is staffed by full -time coord inator Joan H opki ns, full-time assistants, graduate assistants and a cadre of tutorial help. The standards and goals of academic excellence within t he Easte rn Kentuck y University soft ball program w ill cont in ue th ro ughout the years to come. H oused in the Moberly building, Eastern Kentucky University's varsity weight room is a st ate-of-the-art facility that provides EKU's student-ath letes the opportunity to enhance their abilities by making use of top-of-the-line equipment . Boasting a mission statement which reads: " t o create more explosive, dynamic athletes by using multi-jo int movements," the 5,000 square foot w eight room contains 16,000 pounds of total weight. Built in 2001, the faci lity features Eleiko model Olympic weights, York dumbbells with two sets each from 5 -150 pounds and Nebula power stations and racks. Head Strength and Condition ing Coach Jon-Michael Davis and his assistant, Chad Scott, are charged w ith overseeing all of EKU's 300 + student-athletes. Their efforts, however, are supplemented by the three-person training room st aff which is also housed inside the Moberly building, allowing student-at hletes the opportunity for fast and convenient treatment. ,.... -· (D (I) Eastern Kentucky's student-athletes benefit from one of t he fine st sports medi- cine facilities anywhere in the country. The training room is located in t he Moberly Building adjacent t o t he athletic w eight room and is open for use by any EKU st udent -athlete. The large space is occupied by t he most modern training and rehabilit ation equipment available . The training room features several tables u sed du ring treatment and rehabilitation, taping t ables, a wet room t h at fe atu res whirlpools and a fo ur-footdeep rehab pool that includes a sub me rged t readmill for aquatic rehab exercises. The area also contains all of t he latest modalit ies, helping injured student-athletes get back into the game as quickly as possible. The athletic train ing room also houses an examination room used by t eam doctors. The physicians are regularly on site and perform ev aluations, while assist ing the sports medicine staff in ensuring the health of every student-athlete. Director of Sports Medicine Johnda Wireman supervises all of EKU 's effort s, and is joined by full -time assistants Tiffany Napier and Mike Warren, as well as a host of graduate assistants and students who are involved in t he Un iversity's athletic t raining education program. For those sports that are primarily located in Alumni Coliseum , t here is a sat ellit e train ing room area that f eatures a treatment and taping area as wel l as rehabilit ation equipment. EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY �2006 COLONEL SOFTBALL HEAD COACH JANE WORTHINGTON 14th Year * Utah State '82 Coaching Record: 367-327 Jane Worthington has been committed to the success o f the Eastern Kentucky softball p rogram since she started in 1 993, and as of late , t he rewards have been coming fast and f uri ous . The Washington, U tah native is entering her 14'h year with the Co lonels and has guided the squ ad to t w o OVC titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The expectat ions remain high for the 2006 team as the squad loo ks to return t o post-season p lay. Since starting the Colonels' softbal l p rogram, Worthington has posted an imp ressive 367 -327 ove rall mark and an even more striki ng 180- C: .....el) 0 116 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play . Twenty-two AII-OVC First Team players have come through the p rogram and 18 U p layers have been named to the league's second team. "O ~ QJ Wo rthington has found success on the diamond w it h solid pit ching an d strong defense w hi le :C test ing her team early with a challenging non-conference schedu le. Never one to shy away from tough competition, she regularly schedules games against nat ionally-ranked programs in o rder to prepare her squad for the dema nds of Oh io Valley Conference opponents . Worthington ma intains that the only way to improve is to play the best possible teams in the country. Her Eastern Ke ntucky squad s have faced numerous natio na lly-ranked opponents , defeating #7 South Carolina in 1995 and f acing t op-ran ked UCLA in the 2002 NCAA Regional. In add ition, Worth ington has established a nation-w ide recruiting base and continues to attract top p layers from the best high sc hool s and junior col lege p rograms in the count ry. Head Coach Jane Worthington has produced three Ohio Valley Conference Players of the Year, two Ohio Valley Conference Pitchers of the Year and four Ohio Valley Conference Freshmen of the Year. She has received the honor of OVC Coach of the Year two times. Worthington, t he on ly coach in the program's 13 year history, has built the prog ram from the ground up, start ing in her first year at EKU w ith the construction of Gertude Hoo d Field . In the EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY - - -- i~ t,~,. i~.r»·· -i; �- ~-- ~ 2006 COLONEL SOFTBALL , Colonels' f irst season of competition, the spring of 1993, Worthington led the team to a 11 -26 In just its th ird year, t he program posted its first -ever winn ing season (31 -29) and advanced to the finals of the conf erence tournament. Worthington led Eastern Kentucky to another winning season in 1998, ending with 38 w ins, and reached a career milestone with her 200'" victory in 2001. The Colonels have compet ed in the national post-season, playing in both the 2002 and 2004 NCAA Tournaments. In the last five seasons, Worthington has guided Eastern Kentucky to two Ohio Valley Conference tournament titles and two NCAA Tournaments. The Colonels have posted w inning records in four of the last five years. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Worthington spent two years as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio ) and one year as an assistant at Livingston University in Alabama . Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Worthington taught at a jun ior high school in Idaho. Worthington, a 1982 graduate of Utah State, helped the Aggies to a national championship in 1981 w it h a win over Cal-State Fu llerton in the finals . Winning a champion ship as a player, Worthington knows what it takes to be a w inner and has successfully instilled t hose be liefs in her players. As a result, a large number of her former players have followed her lead and ente red the coach ing pro fession. A strong supporter of the growth of fast-pitch softball in Kentucky, Worthington has prov ided n umerous opportun it ies fo r individuals to enhance their softball skills at clinics and camps. On a yearl y basis, she hosts p layer development cl inics and camps to help fast -p itc h softball develop throughout the state. Worthington believes in giving all players the chance to increase t h eir skills and attempts to kee p costs low so that everyone interested can attend . In addition, she believes in devoting personal attention to each pa rt icipant and as a result , tries to keep t he number of participants low by scheduling multi p le events. Worthington has instructed over 3,000 players at Easte rn Kentucky camps and clinics throughout the years and has helped raise the level of play in Kentucky and surrou nding s t ates . In 1996 , Worthington was given the state's Citizen for Sports Equity Outstanding College Coach A w ard. The Colonels' coach also stresses the importance of academics and expects her players to excel in the c lassroom . She feels that a b alance can be achieved and w ith good management skills, her student-athletes can succeed in the classroom and on t he playing field . H er close work with the Student-Athlete Academic Success Center has resulted in many past EK U sof tball p layers being recognized as Co lonel Scholars . In 1999, Michelle Williams received the OVC Medal of Honor for the fourth time afte r grad uating w ith a perfect 4 .0 GPA . After graduation, Worthington's past players have entered the professional fields of law, criminal justice, education, business, aviat ion and coaching . Mil ls' responsibilities include arranging team travel, working with the pitchers and catc hers and assisting Wo rt hingto n in all aspects of coaching . She has been instrumental in maintaining the program's strong recruiting ties on t he West Coast. After a steller two-year career behind the plate, Mills' transition to the Eastern Kentucky coaching staff was an easy one. An outstanding p layer in her own right, Mills also has the dist inction of being part of both t he Colone ls' NCAA Tournament appearances . She competed in the tournament as a player in 2002 and returned as a member of the coaching staff in 2004 . "Megan has done a fantastic job since coming on board, especially in terms of improving our p itching," Worthington commented. "She knew my style of coaching as a player and has adapted very easily to coaching. Megan is a true asset to this program." er, Q) ..c: u The AII-OVC Second Team honoree start ed 96 of 98 games behind t he plate for the Colonels while makin g just three errors in her two-yea r career. She posted a career batting average of .246 and helped lead Eastern Kentucky to its fi rstever NCAA Tournament in 2002. ~ 0 u Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Mills spent her first two collegiate seasons at San Jose City College . While at SJCC, Mills was named to the All-Conference First Team and the All-Northern California Team . In add ition, she was named the t eam's MVP follo w ing her sophomore year. Mills has been heavily involved in conducting c linics and camps throughout the state o f Kentucky. The San Jose, California native earned her bachelor's degree in Correctiona l and Juv enile J ustice Studies from Eastern Kentucky in 2002. She currently resides in Richmond, Ky. Barreras was honored as t he OVC Player of the Year as a senior in 2004 and also captured the league tou rn ament MVP aw ard afte r leading the Colonels to the championship. During her rookie campa ign, the four -year starting sho rt sto p was recogn ized as t he 2001 OVC Freshman of the Year. "Diana was an excellent p layer during her career," Worthington stated. "She was essentia lly a coach on t he fiel d for me while she played so it's only natural for her to move into coaching . She is one of the fiercest compet itors that I have ever seen and I t h in k t hat she will help insti ll that spirit in our current players." The three-time OVC All-Conference honoree also earned the Colonel Scholar Award in each of her years at EK U and was named to t he CoSIDA Academic All-Region squad following her senior season. She holds the program record for ca reer ru ns scored (132) and career stole n bases (62). The Colonels' success this season will depend on how well the t wo groups can unite on the field, and if the fall season is indicative, Eastern Kentucky can be expected to make a strong showing in the Ohio Valley Conference . "Both of t hese catchers are strong players. Decidi ng who will catch might very w ell be the toughest decision t hat I have t o make t his season." After missing al l of last season, senior Erin Hart nett is also expected t o compete for pl aying t ime . INFIELDERS The Colonels were plagued by injuries last season, resu lting in a 22 -30 season, a 1 2-14 record against conference competition, in which their starting line-up featured predominately underclassman, including three freshmen . The Colonels will need production from their seven newcomers in order to add to the pair of NCAA Tournament appearances that they have already acquired and Wor thington feels confident in this happening . " Even though we are a young team, this does not mean that w e won't be successful," Wort hington commented . " I expect good things from our new players . W e don't have time for players to be freshmen, if we want to compet e for a champ ionship, they will need to contribut e immediat ely and I bel ieve t hat they will." PITCHERS Junior Kelsey Anderson, the Colonels' most experienced returning pitcher, will be back at the top spot . After earn ing OVC Freshman of the Year honors in her rookie campaign, Ander son posted a 13- 1 2 mark last year whil e regi st ering a team-low 2 .87 ERA in a team-high 165.2 innings of action . Whi le striking out 99 batters, Anderson was also a t hreat at the plate, scoring 13 runs and driving in 17 runs. The Colonels' infield returns st r ong w ith three of t he fou r expect ed start ers seeing subst antial playing t ime last season . Some changes have been made though and several players w ill be at different posit ions . Sophomore Kat ie Rolf, w ho played sho rtst op last season, w ill be ma king the move to t he first base after start ing 46 games last y ear . A strong defensive p lay er, Rolf is also an offensive t hreat t o opponents. She f inished second on the tea m in both batting percentage (.33 5) and home runs (4) while tallying m ultiple runs in f ive games. Fol lowing a successf ul rookie season , sophomore Chanze Patterson is expect ed to agai n be found at second base. Patterson , last year' s leadoff hitter, was one of t w o Colonel freshman t o start all 52 games last year and led t he squ ad w it h 25 runs. Perhaps the team ' s quickest player, Patter son also led t he t eam in stolen bases . After entering t he 2005 season in competition for playing t im e in the hot corner, jun ior A m y Mayrhofer earned the nod and start ed all 52 games. A much improved batter, Mayrhof er f ini shed second on t he team in RBI (23). Newcomer Keri Macinsky, a junior college tra nsfe r, w ill take over the short stop position . Macinsky rece ived numerous accolades during her t wo-year career at Ohlone Junior College and had a strong s howing during the fall as a Col onel. ~ 0 0 .....:i OUTFIELDERS 0 "Young" is the best w ay to describe t he Col onels' outfield wi th just one upperclassman and a sophomore and two freshmen ex pect ed to play impor tant roles . l,O 0 0 N Sophomore Alex Merrell wi ll get the starting nod in Eastern ' s left field after starting all 52 contests in the middle last year . Merrel l' s qu ic k speed makes her a st rong def ensive p layer and she ranked second on t he team in stolen bases with six. Returning for her senior ca mpaign, Jackie Hu cul is expected t o see t ime in the outfield after inc reased action last season. Freshmen Morgan Springs and Pa m We bber w ill all compete for sta rting positions in the o utfield . A f ter sta ndout p rep careers, all three gained experience agai nst colleg iat e com petit ion in the fa ll and w ill see substant ial playing time as true fresh men. In additi on, classmat e Shelby Thompson and freshmen Kalyn Fox and Jodi Pence w ill all see time on t he mound for Eastern. Thompson started 17 games last season, fanning 61 hitters in 104.2 innings. Fox and Pence gained valuable experi ence during the fall season and wi ll be put to the test immediately in the spri ng . As the MVP of the 2004 Kentucky Softball Championship, Fox also received her team's offensive and p itching awards. Pence, a seven year member of her school 's varsity softball team, was a two-time Al l-Stat e honoree and earned A ll-Area recognition in each of her years. "Pitching is always a key to the success of a team. I think we have a wellrounded staff and I expect them all to get their share of innings. " CATCHERS Freshmen Jaime Kleinsmith and Becky Werle wil l be competing for time behind the plat e following the graduation of t he Colonels' starting catcher. The tournament, hosted by the Colonels for the fourth time, raised almost $3,500, doubling last y ear's earnings, for t he American Cancer Soc iety. "We were ha ppy to host the tournament again this year, " head coach Jane Worthington comment ed. "Not onl y is it for a good cause, but it also g ives a majority of the softball teams in Kentucky a chance to play one another. " This year, sophomore Katie Rolf, who lost her mother to breast cancer four years ago, threw out the ceremonial f irst pitch to open the tournament. T o c lo se the tou rnament, two-time breast cancer survivor Louetta Helton threw out t he f irst pitch of the final game. Cl) . �2006 COLONEL SOFTBALL On M ay 31, 2005 Eastern Kentucky University President Joanne K. Glasser, Esq ., announced the hiring of Mark Sandy as Director of Athletics. Sandy came t o EKU from the University of Richmond where he served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations since 2000 . In his role at Richmond, Sandy secured commitments of more t han nine million dolla rs toward a $20 million Spider athletics ca mpaign, and increased giving by 94 percent, while serving as an administ rator for the men's and women's basketball programs. He inherits an athletics program which had five t eams advance to the NCAA Tournament last season . "It was important that we bring to our campus an indivdual w ho can build on our trad ition of excellence and capitalize on ou r recent success in the Ohio Valley Conference and on the national stage," said Glasser at t he t ime of his hiring. "Mark Sandy understands intercol legiate at hletics from every possible standpoint . H is breadt h of experience as an educator, coach, athletics administrator and athletics fundraiser will serve EKU well as we cont inue to mov e our intercollegiate athletics program forward to even greater successes." From 199 7 to 2000, Sandy served as Associate Athletics Direct or at Miami U niversity, where he was responsible for marketing and major g ifts. He began his career as a high school mathematics and history t eacher, in add ition to coachi ng basketball and baseball, and went on to serve as an Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Evansville, Wake Forest Un iversity and V irginia M ilitary Instit ut e. "Not only does he bring impressive credentials to t he position, he also brings a well-deserved reputation for integrity, a deep and abid ing passion for the academic and athletic success of all student-athletes, and a relentless quest for excellence in every aspect of his life and work," added Glasser. The EKU athletics program is coming off a historically s uccessful year in which f ive teams - men's and women's basketball, volleyball and men's and women's cross country - earned berths to their respective NCAA post-season competition . Eastern's strong showings in each sport in the Ohio Valley Conference culminated in t he men t aking their second-straight all-sports t rophy, while the women finished second . Commissioner Entering its 58th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation' s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conf erence. In 2003, the OVC ext ended its geographical footprint into Alabama for the f irst time, expanding the league's membership to a record 11 institutions with the addition of Jacksonville State University and Samford University. The OVC's proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually plant ed in 1941 . It was then that Roy Stewart, t he at hletics director at M urray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, th e athletics d irector at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at W estern Kentucky, first broached the idea o f form ing a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerg ed Feb. 2728, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as th e th ree orig inal insti tutions combined w ith Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950's, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institut ions to accept a black student . In 1958, M arshall Banks earned ath leticallyrelated aid at Morehead, w hich signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961 , Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in footbal l. With racial barriers broken, the rest o f the inst itutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. Through the past 5 7 years, 13 teams have won or shared the league's football title, including Jacksonville State, w hich has won back-to-back titles in its first t w o years in the league. T he list is led by Eastern Kentucky, winner of 18 outright or shared footbal l crowns. Former OVC member M iddle Tennessee is next with 11, followed by Tennessee Tech with nine, and Murray State and former member Western Kentucky w ith eigh t apiece. Ea stern Illinois, Jacksonvi lle State, Morehead St ate and Tennessee State and forme r members Evansville and East Tennessee State have claimed two football crowns, while Aust in Peay and former member Youngstown State have one each. Murray State and Evansville tied for the initial football championship, and the Racers participated in th e first-ever bo wl game by an OVC team, tying Sul Ross State 21 - 21 in the 1948 Refrigerator Bowl. From 1948 to 1975, OVC t eams played in 15 bowl games, w inning eight of t hem. Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky were also participants in the NCAA Division II playoffs in the early and mid 1970's prior to the NCAA's reclassification of footba ll programs into Division I-AA. The first Division I-AA football playoff was held in 1978 with only four teams, which is the only year through present day that the OVC did not field a playoff representative. In 1979, fou r o f the nation's top teams were invited to the playoffs, and two o f them - Eastern Kentucky and Murray State - were from the OVC. Murray dropped its semifinal game to Lehigh, b ut the Colonels nipped Nevada-Reno in double overtime and claimed the national championship a week later with a 30-7 victory over Lehigh. EKU w as coached by former Kim Melcher Asst. Commissioner Donyale Canada Asst. Commissioner all-America quart erback Roy Kidd, w ho was in his 16th year at the helm o f his alma mater and who skippered the Colonels to a second national t itle three years later. Following the 2002 season, Kidd reti red after 39 years at EKU, a one-school tenure unmatched in Division I-A or I-AA . Upon retirement, he ranked si xth all-time among Division I coaches with 315 v ictories, earning him a spo t in th e College Football Hall o f Fame. In addit ion to Kidd, other coaching legends in the OVC include Charles (Bubber) Murph y, who coached at Middle Tennessee from 1947 - 1968, Western Kentucky's Jimmy Feix (1968-831, Wilburn Tucker ( 1954-67) and Don Wade (1968-82) of Tennessee Tech, Bill Ferguson (1967-77) of Murray State, Guy Penny I 1959-67) o f Morehead State and Boots Donnelly (1977-7 8 at Austin Peay; 19791998 at Middle Tennessee) . A sampling o f former OVC footba ll stars, some of whom were all-Americans during th eir collegia te careers before achieving stardom at th e professional ran ks, include Jim Youngblood and Larry Schreiber (Tennessee Tech), Phil Simms (Morehead State), Virgil Livers and Dale Lindsey (Western Kentucky), M yron Guyton and Wally Chambers (Eastern Kentu cky) and Ray Oldham (Middle Tennessee). Football wasn't the only sport in w hich the OVC was quickly gaining respect. In 1955, the OVC became only the second six-member league nationally to earn an automatic bid to the prestigious NCAA Men 's Basketball Tournament, w hich, at that time, was limited to only 24 participants . The con ference quickly proved worthy of that bid, as Morehead State defeated Marshall (107-921 and Wayne State (95-8 4 ) in the 1956 tournamen t. In the late 1970's, women's athletics began somewhat of a rebirth on th e nat ional scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women's sports. Recognizing the need to p ro vide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC established women's championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, w ith cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initiall y g overned by the Association of Intercollegiate Ath letics for Women, but the overall strength of women's programs in the league was demonstrated by the automati c bids the OVC instantly received w hen the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. Through the early years of t he league, administrators w rest led with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the conference members and th e intense rivalries which developed. Just as it did decades ago, t he OVC took the leadership ro le on wh at has become a national issue. In 1995, the OVC implem ented a f irst -of-i ts-ki nd " Sportsmanshi p Statement", a policy w hich promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one's opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation, and has answered t he challenge o f the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. Additionally , t he OVC annually presents the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Morehead State student-athlete, coach and athletics director, to a junior or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributi ons who bes t exempli fies the characteri stics of sportsmanship and cit izenship. In 2003, the Conference also implemented the OVC Sportsmanship Award, which is EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSllY Lee M oses Asst. Over its 5 7 years, OVC teams have garnered national championships and bo wl games in foot ball, along w ith national t eam or individual t itles in the sports of rifle, cross country, track and golf. The OVC has also produced several Olympic athletes, including M urray St ate's Morgan Hicks, who was a member of the 200 4 Unit ed States Olympic Rifle Team . In addition, some of the greatest players in pro fessional sports were educated at OVC institutions. The list includes former greats such as football's Phil Simms, basketball's Clem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and Bubba Wells (Austin Peay) and two-sport star Steve Ham ilto n ( Morehead State) to p resent-day st andouts like basketball player Trenton Hassell (Austin Peay), football players Eugene Amano (Southeast Missouri) and Bren t Alexander (Tennessee State ), baseball players K ir k Rueter (M urray State), and Jamie W alker (Austin Peay) and professional golfer Jeff Sluman (Tennessee Tech). The playing f ield isn't the only place w here OVC ath letes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awa rds are p resented yearly t o male and female athletes, while others are com mend ed for their academic success by bei ng Medal of Honor recipients o r earning a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional academic achievemen t award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 rema ins alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares fo r t he future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The p residents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Con fe rence, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and baske tball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addit ion, the OVC also sponsors the combined men's and women 's sport o f rifle . Over the last decade, the league has grown, not only in the number of athletics opportunities it provides fo r students, but in terms of the number of institutions in the Conference. In 2003, Jacksonville State University and Samford University became the newest members of the OVC, joining Southeast M issour i Sta t e Unive rsity (1991 ), the University of Tennessee at Martin ( 1 992) and Eastern Illinois University ( 1996) as the league's most recent addit ions.
