More closely akin to his current responsibilities, he spearheaded a major reorganinitionand streamlining ofthe public
university governance structure oflllinois.
His role in the latter accomplishment was made possible in 1996 when the Governor appointed him as Chair of

had been assigned the responsibility for the state's economic
development policy.

THE EKU ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION
Jeff Long
Director of Athletics
Jeffrey P. Long, with administrative and coaching experience at seven Division I Institutions, is the
director of Athletics at Eastern Kentucky University.
"Jeff Long represents the very best of athletic tradition in America," said EKU president, Dr. Robert
Kustra. " I have complete confidence in his abi lity to reach for and achieve excellence in our athletic
programming.
"His background in Big Ten Conference competition, grasp ofNCAA rules and regulations, excellent
reputation among coaches, student-athletes and those with whom he has worked and, most importantly,
his integrity, all lead to the same conclusion - Jeff Long represents the bright future EKU has as an
institution committed to excel lence in both athletics and academics. He is exactly the kind ofperson I had
in mind when I decided that EKU's athletics program deserved a full time athletics director."
Long, 40, was appointed in November, 1998, and has been an energetic leader on behalf of the
Intercollegiate program. In less than a year, Long has initiated a number of programs designed lo improve the overall athletics program.
A top priority for Long has been the student-athletes at EK U.
He has created the Student Athlete Academic Success Center. The center provides student-athl etes academic support through
a computer lab, a supervised study area, individual and group tutorial areas and offices fortheacademicadvisors. ln addition, Long reallocated
funds received from the NCAA for Academic Enhancement, making ii posssible to add an additional academ ic advisor as wel l as secretarial
support to the program. Other initiatives from which the student-athletesatEKU benefit include the re-establishment of the Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee, introducing the Student-Athlete Assembly Program and publishing the first ever Student-Athlete Handbook .
Long has also moved to improve the competitiveness of the Colonels.
Initiatives in this area are overseeing the completion of the athletics portion ofthe new C lassroom and Conditioning Building. This
fac ility houses the first all-sports Olympic weight room and a state-ot~the-art athletic training room for student-athletes, as well as offices
and meeting rooms for the footba ll program. Long has added the first Strength and Conditioning Coach, who is responsible for training al l
16 Colonel teams. The addition ofa locker room at Alumni Coliseum for the women's track team is also planned for the 1999-2000 academic
year.
To better serve the student-athletes and the coaches at EKU, Long has realigned the senior administrative staff. This realignment
has made possible the creation of the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Adm inistration and Compl iance. This position increases
EKU's commitment to NCAA and OVC rules compliance. It also results in the designation of two administrators responsible for working
directly with coaches and their programs.
Long recently negotiated marketing agreements that have created partnerships with Daktronics Sports Marketing and Host
Communications. The EKU/Daktronics partnership has produced the firston-campus Division I-AA video scoreboard for Roy Kidd Stadium
and an electronic message center at the entrance to Alumni Coliseum with no expenditure of Institutional funds.
The Host Communications partnersh ip li nks EK U with the leader in col lege sports marketing forthe purpose ofincreasing revenues
through corporate sponsorships and season ticket sales.
Recognizing EKU'sneed to reach out to alumni and fans, Long introducedthe"Colonel Express". This newspaper will communicate
the accompl ishments of EKU 's student-athletes and coaches and share t he exciting changes occurring in EKU athletics with all members
of the EKU family .
Long came to Eastern Kent11cky following a brief period as Associate Athletics Director at Virginia Tech. The majority of Long's
career in the administration oflntercollegiate Athletics has been spent at the University ofMichigan. He was hired by Michigan's legendary
footbal l coach and athletics director, Bo Schembechler.
While at Michigan, he served ina wide-range ofadministrative capacities. Long's duties included his leadership in the sponsorship
ofthefirston-campus KickofffClassic in I 995. He was Michigan'schiefadminstrative liaison for 11 football bowl games, including the 1997
National Championship; three men's basketball Final Fours, including one National Championship; and three Ice Hockey Frozen Fours, which
resulted in two National Championships.
Long has held administrative and coaching positions at Rice University, Duke University and North Carolina State University.
EKU'sDirectorof Athletics received his bachelor's degree in 1982 from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he earned seven varsity
letters in footba ll and baseball. He completed his master's degree program in 1983 at Miami University, whereheservedas agraduate assistant
football coach.
Long is a member of the National Association ofCollegiate Athletics Directors, the National Association of Basketball Coaches,
the American Football Coaches Association and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, as well as several other professional
organizations.

Education: Utah State University (BS 1982) and Miami (OH)(MA 1990)

Jane Worthington is entering her eighth season as the head coach of the Colonel softball program. She is the only coach in the history ofEKU Softball and has built the team from
the ground up. In her first year at Eastern, Worthington oversaw construction of Gertrude
Hood Field, recruiting and all ofthe other necessary tasks that are required to begin a new program. The 1992-93 season
was the initial year of competition for Eastern and Worthington led the team to an 11-26 record. The squad improved to
26-28 in its second year of existence and turned in its first winning season in 1994-95 (31-29). In that third season, the
team also reached the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. As a result ofthat performance, several players
were named to the A II-Tournament Team. The 1995-96 campaign saw the Colonels take on many Top Twenty teams as
they traveled west to California. The quality competition prepared the Colonels for the tight OVC race to follow. The
1997-98 team returned 10 players and boasted a strong recruiting class which earned a 38-1 9 record, improving on the
previous year's 23-29 mark. The 1999 season, the Colonels returned 10 starters, but key injuries affected the Colonels.
Eastern posted a 23-3 I record last season.
Worthington is a native of Washington, Utah, who came to Eastern after serving two seasons as an assistant coach
at Miami of Ohio. While coaching at Miami, she received her master's degree in Sport Studies. Before her stint in Oxford,
she served one year as an assistant coach at Livingston University in Alabama. Prior to coaching on the collegiate level,
Worthington was a junior high school teacher in Idaho. Her diverse coaching and teaching opportunities provided her with contacts throughout the country, as is reflected
by the diversity of the Colonel squad.
The 2000 team has players from alI over the United States and
Canada. Worthington has recruited players from Canada, Washington,
Oregon, California, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio. Worthington will
attempt to blend all of these players together for a successful season.
Past Colonel players have come from British Columbia, Alberta, Utah,
Texas, Illinois and Maryland.
Worthington graduated from Utah State University in 1983, following an extremely successful playing career. She started as an outfielder for the Aggies and, in 198 1, helped USU win the national championship beating Cal State-Fullerton in the finals. With her championship as a player, Worthington knows what it takes to be a winner. She
attempts to share this knowledge with all ofher players, and tries to
raise their levels of play. This caring attitude has resulted in a numberof
her past players following her lead to also become coaches.

THE COLONEL COACHING STAFF
jane worthington
A strong supporter ofthe growth ofKentucky fast pitch softball, she has provided opportunities for individuals to
enhance their softball skills at clin ics and camps. She has had yearly player-development cl inics and camps to help this
growth locally and throughout the state. She is a strong believer in keeping the cost low to attend EKU camps, so that
everyone has a opportunity to enhance their skills. She also feels that she must keep the number of clinic and camp
participants low to enable her to know every participant on a first-name basis. She has instructed more than 3,000 players
at the EKU camps and clinics throughout the years and has helped to raise the
level of play with in the state ofKentucky and surrounding states. In 1996,
Worthington was given the Citizen for Sports Equity Outstanding College Coach
Award.
The Colonel coach is also a strong supporter of academics and expects all student-athletes to excel in the classroom. She feels that a balance
can be acheived, and with good management skills, the students can succeed
in the classroom, as well as on the playing field. Worthington acknowledges
the integral role that the Office ofthe Athletic Academic Cow1selor plays in the
academic success of the athletes. The close work between the two has resulted in the recognition often EKU softball p layers as Colonel Scholars last
year. Michelle Williams, a Colonel junior, received the Ohio Valley Medal of
Honor last season with a 4.0 grade point average. Many of Worthington's
past players have gone on to have successful careers in law, criminal justice,
education, higher education, business and coaching.
Worthington has a strict philosophy regarding scheduling, maintaining
the only way to improve is to play the best possible competition in the country.
Her EKU teams have been extremely competitive against nationally-ranked teams. In 1994, the Colonels lost the second
game of a doubleheader to third-rated Southwestern Louisana by a narrow 2-0 count. In addition, in 1995, No.7 South
Carolina fell to the the Colonels, 3-2. Every season, the Colonels face nationally-ranked opponents. The 2000 Colonel

2000 prospectus
The 2000 season is filled with excitement after a stellar recruiting class and a nucleus second to none. With 12
players returning from last year's squad and the addition of five high quality freshmen, head coach Jane Worthington's
squad is loaded with potential. However, Eastern will face one of its tougest schedules since its inception in 1993. Eastern
will play at least ten teams that participated in the 1999 NCAA Regionals last season, such as Kansas, Tennessee, East
Carolina and Southeast Missouri.
Three seniors don the Maroon and White for their final seasons. Two-time First Team All-OVC selection Kim
Sarrazin headlines this crop ofEKU seniors. After hitting a team-leading .420 last season, Kim looks to make her final
year an excellent one. 1998 OVC Player of the Year Kelly Swanson returns for her final season after a dissappointing
junior campaign. She will look to rebound to that level this season. Senior Kelly Pikula heads to the outfield for her final
season with the Colonels after a good junior year. The former Meramec Junior College player wi ll look to provide the
Colonels with positive leadership.
Seven others return for the Colonels, including: junior pitcher Kristina Mahon who won a career-high nine games
last season; two-time OYC Medal of Honor recepient, third baseman Michelle Williams; one of three Canadians,
outfielder Renee LeBlanc; Kentucky natives, designated player Mary Dales and outfielder Amy Wells; California native,
catcher Laura Pullin.
Five freshmen come into the program ready to make an immediate impact for the Colonels. Twin sisters, Amy and
Bethany Herrington from Olympia, WA, will look to solidify the middle infield and the middle ofthe batting lineup. Speedy
outfielder Elise Burch from Scapoose, OR, will look to create runs for the Colonels. Two freshmen pitchers will add depth
to the EKU staff. Jessica Soto from Garden Grove, CA, will use a variety of pitches to keep batters guessing, wh ile Ohio
native Jonelle Csora will attempt to keep batters offthe bases with her deceiving fastball.

Originally a shortstop for the Colonels, Kelly has made a smooth transition to first base. She is

Year: Junior
Hometown: Beaumont, Alberta
Major: Business Management
Position: Outfield
Throws: Right
Bats: Right
High School: Beaumont Composite

Renee is expected to play in the outfield this season. During her freshman and
halfway through her sophomore seasons, she was starting at third base fo r the
Colonels. Coming from Canada, the rigors of Division I softball took their toll on
LeB lanc during her freshman season, and she was forced to miss the last three
weeks of the year with a s houlder inj ury. Renee then came back for her sophomore season with a hea lthy shoulder, and halfway through, was moved to the
outfield. T his past fall, she had two outfield assists, gunning out two runners at
home. LeBlanc adds a tremendous arm and experience to the
Colonel outfield. "Renee had to adjust to the Division I level,
and she spent her summer preparing for that first season. She
is one of our most experienced players and knows what it takes
to win," stated Worthington.

FOR THE RI CORI>

Renee is the softball representative for the
