SEASON OUTLOO~
H ead coach Jane Worthington and the Colonels are eagerly anticipating the 1999 softball
season. The Colonels graduated two seniors, Brandy Bevans and Angie Dunagan , and
are expected to make a run at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship.
Eleven Colonels return for the 1999 season with four seniors leading the team. Two-time
second team All-OVC player Amy DeSmet enters her final season after hitting .327 and
fie lding an astonishing .988. DeSmet had six errors in 482 chances which has made her a
cornerstone to the Eastern defense. Also returning, pitcher Karen Scott who also sports a
career with OVC award credentials. Scott was
named Freshman of the Year and All-OVC second team in 1995. Last season, Scott was impressive with a 16-9 record and was named to
the All-OVC first team. Outfielders, N icole
Wood from Garland, UT and Jill MacDonald
from Medicine Hat, AB, will solidify the Colonels offensively and defensively. Wood was
named All-OVC second team last year after hitting .266 with five home runs. MacDonald will
attempt to break the Colonel stolen base record
this season. Also returning to the Colonels are
juniors Brittani Collini, Kim Sarrazin and Kelly
Swanson. Swanson, who was named last
year's OVC Player of the Year and All-OVC first
team, will look to lead the Colonels offensively
after hitting .416 last season. She set new Colonel records for batting average (.416), RB I's (46), doubles ( 17), home runs ( 12), and slugging percentage (.7 13). Catcher Kim Sarrazin also returns after having a tremendous season and being named to the All-OVC first team. Brittani Collini, a native of Louisville, KY,
will also contribute to the Colonels quest for the OVC crown . Rounding out the returnees
are sophomores Kerri Duncan, Renee LeBlanc, Kristina Mahon and Michelle Will iams.
Duncan had a sensational freshman campaign, was selected as a member of the All-OVC
first team and was named the 1998 OVC Freshman of the Year. Duncan led EKU with a 1.46
ERA and set a Colonel record w ith 18 wins in a season. Michelle Williams from Louisville
started every game at second base for the Colonels, and will look again to fight for a
starting role in the infield. Infielder Renee LeBlanc will continue to fight for a starting role
after starting at third base last season. Pitcher Kristina Mahon from Orangevale, CA,
pitched effectively and saved a team-high two games last season.
Six newcomers join the Colonels for the 1999 season. Junior college transfer Kelly Pikula
joins the Colonels after spending two seasons at Meramac Junior College in St. Louis, MO.
Pikula will add speed and depth to the Colonel outfield. New freshman include Mary Dales
from Bowling Green, KY; Lisa Edwards from Akron, OH; Laura Pullin from Modesto, CA;
Devon Thomas from Walton, KY; and Amy Wells from Louisville, KY. Edwards will look to
make an immediate impact for the Colonels in the infield.

HEAD COACH
JANE
Cl<THll'GfQi

W

Jane Worthington is entering her seventh season as
the head coach of the Colonel softball program. She
is the only coach in the history ofEKU Softball and
has bui It the team from the ground up. In her fi rst
year at Eastern, Worthington oversaw the construction of Gertrude Hood Field, recruiting and all of
the other necessary tasks that are required to begin a new program. The 1992-93 season was the
initial year of competition fo r Eastern and
Worthington led the team to an 11-26 record. The
squad improved to 26-28 in its second year of existence and turned in its fi rst winning season in 199495 (3 1-29). In that thi rd season, the team a lso
reached the fi nals of the OYC Tournament. As a result of that performance,
several players were named to the A ll-Tournament Team. The 1995-96 campaign
saw the Colonels take on many Top Twenty teams as they traveled west to California . The q uality competit ion prepared the Colonels for the tight OYC race to
fo llow. The 1997-98 team returned IO players and boasted a strong recruiting
class which earned a 38-19 record, improving on the previous year's 23-29 mark.
Worthington is a native of Washi ngton, Utah, who came to Eastern after
serv ing two seasons as an assistant coach
at Miam i of Ohio. While coaching at Miami,
she received her master's degree in Sport
Stud ies. Before her stint in Oxford, she
served one year as an assistant coach at
Livingston University in Alabama. Prior to
coaching on the collegiate level, Worth ington
was a j unior high school teacher in Idaho.
Worthington graduated from Utah State
University in 1983 fol lowing an extremely
successfu l playing career. She started as
an outfielder for the Aggies and, in 1981 ,
helped USU win the national championship
beating Cal State-Fullerton in the fi nals.

HEAD COACH
A strong supporter of the growth of Kentucky fast pitch softball, she has
provided opportunities for individuals to enhance their softball skills at clinics and
camps. She has had many player-development clinics and camps to help this growth
locally and throughout the state. In 1996, Worthington was given the C itizen for
Sports Equity Outstanding College Coach Award.
The Colonel coach is also a strong supporter of academics and expects all
student-athletes to excel in the classroom. She feels that a balance can be acheived,
and with good management skills, the students can succeed in the classroom as
well as on the playing fi eld. Worthington acknowledges the integral role that the
Office of the Athletic Academic Counselor plays in the academic success of the
athletes. The c lose work between the two has resulted in the recognition often
EKU softball players as Colonel Scholars last year.
Worthington has a strict philosophy regarding scheduling, maintaining the
only way to improve is to play the best possible competition in the country. Her
EKU teams have been extremely competitive against nationally-ranked teams. In
1994, the Colonels lost the second game of a doubleheader to third-rated Southwestern Louisana by a narrow 2-0 count. In addition, in 1995, No. 7 South Carolina fell to the the Colonels, 3-2. Every season, the Colonels face nationallyranked oppo nents.
