EKU head coach Jane Worthington is anticipating more wins this year, despite playing another tough slate of non-conference opponents and the always-rigorous Ohio Valley Conference schedule. With this year's additions to the team, Worthington thinks this could be the best defensive team the Colonels have ever put on the field. "We should finish in the top half of the conference, but it all depends on our pitching," said Worthington. "I think we will compete with the traditionally strong programs like Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech." The Colonels are returning five players, but not all of them will be available this year due to injury. Two of the returnees are starting outfielders Angie Dunagan and Brandy Bevans. Dunagan is one of the best defe nsive outfielders in the OVC, and Bevans is an experienced starter, who made the 1995 OVC All-Tournament Team and Honorable Mention AII-OVC. The Colonels' only senior is infielder Jeanie King, who started at shortstop last season. King could see playing time in a variety of places this year because of her versatility and strong bat. One returning Colonel is doubtful for a return this year due to a serious knee injury suffered during the fall season. Pitcher Karen Scott, the 1995 OVC Freshman of the Year, cou ld see some action on the mound for Eastern if her recovery is speedy. Amy DeSmet, a starter at first base last year, missed action in the fall but will be back in the Colonel lineup this spring. The newcomers are expected to contribute greatly to an improved EKU squad. Starting behind the plate, freshman Kim Sarrazin played well in the fall and should probably bat close to the number three spot. Missy Phillips was EKU's only starting pitcher this fall and should see significant time on the mound th is spring. Junior college transfer Erin Vance will compete with DeSmet for time at first. Transfer Nicole Wood will probably see action in a middle infield position, adding a power-hitting bat to the lineup. Lindsey Blake, a freshman third baseman, also played well in the fall to earn the inside track on the leadoff hitting position. Sophomore Jill MacDonald and freshman Brittani Collini will most likely battle for the remaining outfield spot. Kelly Swanson is a strong athlete who can be used in both infield or outfield positions. Another transfer, Heather Farmer, will see time at second base and help with the pitching duties. The Colonels hope that Brenda Cognac can rehabilitate several injuries and contribute to the lineup in a utility and reserve role. �ED Head Coach Jane Worthington Jane Worthington is entering her fifth season as the head coach of the Colonel Softball program. She is the only coach in the history of EKU Softball and has built the team from the ground up. In her first year at Eastern, Worthington oversaw the construction of Gertrude Hood Field, recruiting and all of the other necessary tasks that are required to begin a new program. The 1992-93 season was the intial year of competition for Eastern and Worthington led the team to an l 1-26 record. The squad improved to 26-28 in its second year of existence and turned in its first winning season in 1994-95 (31-29). In that third season, the team also reached the finals of the OVC Tournament. As a result of that run, several players were named to the All-Tournament Team in addition to the regular-season honors that they had picked up. This year's team returns only a handful of players but the Colonel mentor is excited about the returnees and a strong recruiting class which look to improve on last year's 18-35 mark. This past year, Worthington received the Citizen for Sports Equity Oustanding College Coach Award. Worthington is a native of Washington, Utah who came to Eastern after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Miami of Ohio. While coaching at Miami, she received her master's degree in Sports Studies. Before her stint in Oxford, she served one year as an assistant coach at Livingston University in Alabama. Prior to coaching on the collegiate level, Worthington was a junior high school teacher in Idaho. �Head Coach lS) Worthington graduated from Utah State University in 1983 following an extremely successful playing career. She started as an outfielder for the Aggies and in 198 I helped USU win the national championship. A strong supporter of the growth of Kentucky fast pitch softball, she has provided opportunities for individuals to enhance their softball skills at clinics and camps. She has had many player-development clinics and camps to help develop this growth locally and throughout the state. The Colonel coach is also a strong supporter of academics and expects all student-athletes to excel in the classroom. She feels that a balance can be achieved, and with good management skills, the students can succeed in the classroom as well as the playing field. Worthington acknowledges the integral role that the Office of the Athletic Academic Counselor plays in the academic success of the athletes. The close work between the two has resulted in the recognition of seven EKU softball players as Colonel Scholars. Worthington has a strict philosophy regarding scheduling, maintaining the only way to improve is to play the best possible competition in the country. Her EKU teams have been extremely competitive against nationally-ranked teams. In 1994,the Colonels lost the second game of a doubleheader to thirdrated Southwestern Louisiana by a narrow 2-0 count. Eastern also travels each year to the prestigious National Invitational Championships in Rock Island, IL, where the Colonels compete against numerous top 25 teams. orthington's Record Year 1993 1994 1995 1996 Total Won Lost 11 26 31 18 86 26 28 29 35 118 �The Staff Melissa Plaster Restricted Earnings Coach Melissa Plaster is in her first year as the Restricted Earnings Coach. Prior to coming to EKU, Plaster was the Restricted Earnings coach at the University of California, Santa Barbara for three years. Plaster played for the Gauchos for two seasons, starting half of the games her junior year and most of the games her senior year behind the plate. She obtained a B.A. in Psychology in 1993. Plaster shares both on-field and office responsibilities. Not only does she help current Colonels to strive to be the best, she also is involved in the recruiting process to assist in bringing future Colonels to Eastern that will make a difference in the program. She is working toward her master's degree in Sports Administration here at Eastern Kentucky University. Hugh Davis Volunteer Statistician Hugh Davis, a 37-year old native of Middlesboro, KY, keeps both the scorebook and individual and team stats for the Colonel softball team. In addition to his commitment to the softball program, Davis is also entering his 20th season as a member of the Eastern baseball, football and basketball stat crews. A 1977 graduate of Middlesboro High School, he attended EKU from 1977-1983 while majoring in accounting. He is employed by Great Financial Bank in Richmond were he serves as head teller. He is the son of Marshall and Dottie Davis of Middlesboro. She is a versatile athlete who can play a number of positions. Jeanie has a strong arm and a strong bat, hitting well over .300 in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. She is a natural team leader and was voted the lone team captain last year. She is currently on pace to break many Colonel softball records in both fielding and hitting categories. Jeanie has led the Colonels in doubles for two consecutive seasons. Jeanie is majoring in corrections and juvenile services and is on track to graduate this year. She has started mainly in cencerfield where she earned honorable mention AIIOVC honors in 1995 and was an All-Tournament selection chat same year. Brandy possesses good speed and is one of many Colonels chat will be swiping bases this season. In her freshman season, Bevans was tied for a team-high 11 stolen bases. V . Angie has played in all Colonel games since coming to EKU. She began her career at shortstop, but was moved to the outfield last season. Angie has excelled in the outfield and is one of the OVC's best defensive players. Angie possesses explosive speed both in the field and on the bases. She has the ability to read the defense which allows her to be one of the most feared baserunners on the Colonels. Angie had a tremendous high school career and is one of the best softball players produced by the state of Kentucky. She has been challenged again this season with a knee injury requiring surgery. Karen has the determination and work ethic it takes to rehab. She may be ready to see action this spring. Karen had a tremendous 1995 season. She was named the OVC's Freshman of the Year. She was also a member of the AII-OVC Second Team and a 199 5 OVC All-Tournament Team member. Karen holds a number of Eastern's season pitching records, including 15 wins and a 1.89 earned run average. A knee injury sidelined her for most of the fall season, but she is expected to be back this spring. Amy played in 50 games last season, primarily at first base. Her talents have also seen her at second base and in the outfield. Amy had a team-high 15 sacrifice bunts last season and is a consistent all-around player. She was with the Colonels last season, but due to transfer regulations, this will be Brenda's first year to compete with EKU. She was originally recruited as a catcher, but may see time in other positions. She has been rehabilitating an elbow injury and is hoping to be ready for the spring season. Brenda is an education major. Highlight on Cognac: Brenda transferred to EKU in 1995 Farmer #16 Junior Infielder Wellsville, UT -~ 1--I • Heather attended and played softball the past two seasons at Snow College in Ephriam, UT. While at SC, she mainly played second base, but is a versatile infielder. Heather is a switch hitter and will look to add another offensive weapon in the Colonel lineup. She is a talented athlete and is always striving to excel in her endeavors. Heather is majoring in recreational therapy. I Meet the Newcomers MacDonald #21 Sophomore Infielder/Outfielder Medicine Hat, Alberta Jill is a transfer, playing last year at Louisiana Tech. She is a versatile athlete and can play a variety of positions. Jill's experience with Louisiana Tech will provide her with some valuable insights. Jill played basketball and volleyball in high school in Canada. She is majoring in microbiology. Highlight on MacDonald: EKU from Louisiana Tech Jill transferred to Phillips # 10 Junior Pitcher Phoenix, AZ Missy joins the Colonels after a tremendous career at Central Arizona College. While at CAC, she helped the Vaqueras to a second-place finish at the National Junior College championships last season. In 1995, Missy's first season at Central Arizona, she was a member of the NJ CAA national championship team. Missy is the first lefthander to pitch for the Colonels in their fifth year of existence. She throws a variety of pitches and tends to keep batters on their toes. Missy is a fine student and is pursuing a degree in Recreational Therapy. Highlight on Phillips: Missy helped lead Central Arizona to a national championship �Meet the Newcomers Vance #3 Junior Infielder Phoenix, AZ Erin comes to Eastern after a fine junior college experience as a teammate of Missy Phillips. She, too, was a member of the 1995 NJCAA National Champioship Softball team while attending Central Arizona College. Last season, Erin was a starter for the Vaqueras when they were the NJCAA national runners-up. Erin is majoring in sociology. Highlight on Vance: Erin helped lead Central Arizona to a national championship Wood #25 Sophomore Infielder Garland, UT Nicole is a transfer from Utah State, playing the majority of her career at the shortstop position. She possesses a strong bat and is expected to hit in the middle of the lineup for Eastern. Nikki will bring some strength to the Colonel batting order and will be another gun for Coach Worthington to look for when needing an offensive spark. Nikki is a recreational therapy major. Highlight on Wood: Nicole transferred to EKU from Utah State �!I 6l Meet the Newcomers Blake #5 Freshman Infielder Phoenix, AZ Lindsey is expected to start at third base this season. Her speed will help defending the bunt and will create more options on offense. Lindsey has been playing competitive softball for the past seven years. During this time, she has played in six ASA national tournaments. Lindsey attended Moon Valley High School which captured the 1993 and 1995 state championships. She was a four-year letterwinner in softball and received many athletics awards : '96 Desert Sky first team, '95 Fiesta Region first team and '95 Arizona Republic first team Class SA catcher. She was a member of the National Honor Society and maintained a 3.9 GPA while in high school. Highlight on Blake: Lindsey helped lead Moon Valley to state championships in 1 93 and 1 95 Collini #12 Freshman Outfielder Louisville, KY Brittani is one of four freshmen this season for the Colonels. Brittani comes to Eastern with an exceptional high school repertoire. She attended Jeffersontown High School where she played four years of softball and volleyball. Last season, she was named Miss Softball for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Brittani saw action this fall in the outfield and is once again expected to be competing for a starting position in the spring. Highlight on Collini: Brittani was Kentucky's Miss Softball in 1996 �!17! Meet the Freshmen Sarrazin #22 Freshman Catcher St. Eustache, Quebec Kim comes to EKU with an abundance of talent. She has the skills to play any position on the field, but will mainly see playing time at catcher. She has an excellent arm and will look to throw out a record number of potential base stealers. Kim has ability to call a good game and will help Eastern's pitchers reach their full potential. Kim resides in Quebec has adapted to the American culture extremely well. She is an excellent athlete who excels at ice hockey and ringette. Highlight on Sarrazin: Kim is expected to start at catcher for the Colonels Swanson #8 Freshman Infielder/Outfielder Winnipeg, Manitoba Kelly is one of three Canadians on the Colonel squad this season. She played her summer softball with the Winnipeg Smitty's Terminators who captured the Canadian National Championships for the past three years. She comes to EKU in mid-year from the University of Manitoba where she played field hockey. Kelly is a versatile infielder and is expected to boost both the Colonel offense and defense this spring. EKU Softball History 1991 August - Eastern Kentucky University hires Jane Worchingcon as the EKU head softball coach with team co begin play in 1992-93. Worthington oversees the construction of Gertrude Hood Field and begins to recruit for the upcoming season. 1993 Fall 1992 - The EKU softball team plays the first fast pitch softball game on Gertrude Hood Field. They defeat Miami University in both games of a doubleheader. The wins are during the fall season and are not counted in the overall record of the program. March 8- Eastern wins its first regular season game against Bellannine, 1·0. Freshman Katie Collins throws a six-hit shutout. April IO · Eastern defeats its fi rst Ohio Valley Conference opponent, UT Marcin, 2-1. Katie Collins is the winning pitcher. April 2 4 - Katie Collins throws a four-hitter and the Colonels win their first OVC Tournament game against Austin Peay, 1-0. Season Wrapup · In its inaugural season, EKU has an overall record of I 1-26. 1994 February 2 7 - EKU begins the season by winning the first two games of its second year of play against UT Chattanooga, 5-3 and 5-4. March 18 · Eastern plays Its first nationally ranked opponent, #3 Southwestern Louisiana. Eastern lost the first game 10-0, but managed to make the second game closer. The Colonels were dropped by the national-powerhouse Lady Cajuns, 2-0. Season Wrapup · In their second season, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 2628. Jamie Parker and Katie Collins earn AllConference honors while Parker is also a mem· ber of the All-Tournament team. Angie Dunagan helped lead the Colonels to a third-place finish last year 1995 March 24 · Eastern defeats regionally-ranked East Carolina, 3-0. Karen Scott pitched a fo ur-hit shutout. April 14 · EKU defeats cwo regionally-ranked teams, South Ca rolina, 4-3, and South Florida, 8-7. Lorie Horner was credited with both Colonel victories. April 29 · The Colonels fight through the loser's bracket to reach the finals of the OVC Tournament. EKU plays five games in the final day of competition but eventually runs out of gas against a well-rested Tennessee Tech squad. Brandy Bevans, Jamie Parker, Lorie Horner and Karen Scott are all members of the OVC All-Tournament team. Season Wrapup · Eastern records its fi rst winning season with a record of 31 -29. Several Colonels receive confe rence awa rds and recognition. Jamie Parker, Amy Jones and Karen Scott are all named to the AII-OVC teams. Karen Scott is also presented the OVC Freshman of the Yea r Award. 1996 Season Wrapup · The Colonels finish with an 18-35 record after caking on several teams ranked in the top 25 throughout the season. Eastern records a I 5-1 I mark in the conference, placing the Colonels third. Eastern has produced first team, second team, all-tournament team and Freshman of the Year winners in the past, and last year had a thirdtime first team selection in Jamie Parker. The Colonels have also produced academic accomplishments as well as Annette Vivier earned GTE Academic All-District honors in 1994. Here is a list of the players in EKU softball history that have received various awards including AII-OVC accolades. 1995 ovc All-Tournament Brandy Bevans Lorie Horner Jamie Parker Karen Scott 1994 GTE Academic All-District Annette Vivier Brandy Bevans was an OVC All-Tournament selection in 199 5. �Administration !23! Dr. Robert Baugh Dean, College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics/ Athletics Director Dr. Robert Baugh serves as Director of Achlecics and as Dean of Eascern's College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, one of the University's nine academic colleges. Baugh, former professor and chair of the EKU Department of Health Education, assumed the duties of acting dean in January of 1987. He also served a six-month stint as Acting Director of Athletics during the 1990-9 1 school year. He has been ac Eastern since 1970. He is a member of the NCAA Council, the NCAA Eligibility Committee and the NCAA Initial Eligibility Committee. Prior co arriving ac EKU, Baugh taught for four years at Austin Peay State University, following a stint of high school teaching in University City MO. Baugh holds the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University. Baugh and his wife, Carol, reside in Richmond. She is a professor in EKU's College of Allied Health and Nursing. Betty Werner Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs Betty Werner enters her first year at Eastern Kentucky as Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs. Werner served as an athletics director ac Drake for 13 years, first as an assistant director for women's athletics from 1974-79. During that time, she was also the head men's tennis coach. In 1979, she was appointed Associate Athletics Director for Men's and Women's Athletics and Senior Women's Administrator. Prior to her tenure at Drake, she coached the men's tennis and women's basketball teams at Maryville College (TN} from 1972-1974. Mose recently she coordinated concession sales ac Coors Field for non-profit organizations, raising more than $ I million for those organizations her final year. Werner received her bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa in 1970 and received her master's degree from the University of Missouri in 1972. Mike Blaser Assistant Director of Athletics for External Affairs Mike Blaser has begun hissecond year ac Eastern serving the University as Assistant Director of Athletics for External Affairs. Blaser, 36, who received both his bachelor's ('84) and master's ('86) degrees from EKU, worked two and one-half years in the marketing and promotions department at UNLV, having served in '94·'95 as the Director of Athletics Promotions. Prior co his stint at UNLV, he was assistant director of athletic markecing and promotions at the University of Louisville for cwo years, after serving at UL the previous year as an athletic marketing assistant in sales. His other athletic-related experience comes from stints with che Savannah Cardinals Class A baseball club as General Manager ( 1986-87) and with the Jacksonville Expos Class AA baseball club as Assistant General Manager ( 198 7-89) . Blaser and his wife, Risa, have three children: Natalie (5), Mitchell (4) and Chase (2). �!24!
