Located on the sou th side of campus, the new building features state-of-the-art business classrooms and labs, faculty and administrative offices and the outreach services of EKU's College of Business and Technology. Eas tern's Fitness and Wellness Center opened in the fall of 2004 and features state-of-the-art equipment which is available free of cost for all EKU students. It continued unabated throughout a 38-year career in various administrative and teaching roles at EKU, including a five-year stint as Vice President for Administrative Affairs, from 1998-2003. His last three years of service were as a half-time faculty member in the Department of Computer Science. As he addressed faculty and staff at a campus-wide convocation on Aug. 15, 2007, just two days after being named Presid ent for the interim, Dr. Whitlock recalled the tremendous difference the institution he cherishes has made in his own life. (The Eastern faculty) "largely made me what I was then and am now," he said. ;JI will admit to you that I love Eastern, and when my service in the presidency is finished, if I have helped more of you love her too, then I will have done my job." - President \'Vhitlock On Oct. 22, 2007, the interim label was removed and now, as EKU' s 11th President, Dr. Whitlock is devoted to upholding the rich tradition of his alma mater while guiding her to even greater heights of excellence. After earning two degrees from Eastern - a bachelor's degree in history and social science in 1965 and a master's degree in history a year later - Dr. Whitlock earned his doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Kentucky in 1981. Almost 1,700 degree candidates were honored at the annual spring commencement in May 2008. After two years of active duty with the U.S. Army, Dr. Whitlock returned to Eastern in 1968 to serve as Director of Publications. Three years later, he was named Director of Public Information. In 1976, he was tapped by President J.C. Powell to serve as Executive Assistant to the President, continuing in that role through the administration of President Hanly Funderburk. As Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Dr. Whitlock was responsible for Facilities Services, Public Safety, Information Technology and Delivery Systems, Media Resources, and Un iversity Farms. For a portion of his tenure, he also served as the institution's chief financial officer. Dr. Whitlock has long been an active participant in community life, serving since 1999 on the Madison County School Board, including two terms as chair. He also has served as a consultant w ith the Kentucky School Boards Association. He is an Elder and past board chair in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He and his w ife, Joanne, have been married 39 years and have two grown children, Robert and Janet. At his first convocation as President, Dr. Whitlock offered faculty and staff one gauge by which his stint as President may be judged: "I will admit to you that I love Eastern, and when m y service in the presidency is finished, if I have helped more of you love her too, then I will have done my job." From 1997 to 2000, Sandy served as associate athletics d irector at Miami (Ohio) University, wh ere he w as responsible for marketing and major gifts. He b egan his career as a high school m athematics and history teacher, in addition to coaching basketball an d baseball, and went on to serve as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Evansville, Wake Forest University and Virgin ia M ilitary Institute. Upon being hired, Sandy vow ed that his p riority would always be to enhan ce the student-athlete experience, adding that increasing financial resources through fund-raising, ticket sales and corp orate partnerships would also be a focal p oint of the effort. Sandy was an all-conferen ce baseball player and captain of the basketball team at Concord College in West Virginia, w here he earned a bachelor's degree in 1974. He went on to earn a m aster' s of education d egree from Lynchburg College. He and his w ife, Kitty, have tw o children, Kraig and Madison. ' ~, Entering her fourth season at the helm of the Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer program, head coach Lindsay Basalyga has firmly entrenched the Colonels as a force to be reckoned with inside and outside of the Ohio Valley Conference. Basalyga has put the pieces in place for the Colonels to have immediate success. For the fourth consecutive year, sh e has brought to Richmond a recruiting class that Soccer Buzz magazine ranks among the top three in the conference. The 2008 class - which features two goalkeepers, two midfielders and two defenders - is ranked third in the conference, and features three players whose club teams recently played in their countries' national tournaments. The 2007 class was rated second in the conference behind only four-time defending champion Samford. "I have worked hard to create a positive competitive atmosphere here over the past three years." Basalyga said. "We have been able to recruit quality people into the program and now it's just a matter of us gelling on the field." The 2008 season looks to be a successful one for Basalyga and the Colonels. To accompany four straight top-three recruiting classes, Basalyga finally has a well-stocked senior class composed of six veterans from her very first recruiting class. Behind the guidance of Basalyga, the EKU soccer program made great strides during the 2007 season, compiling a programbest record of 4-11-3, and tying program highs in goals (14) and assists (six). In the first game of the season, the Colonels battled ACC opponent Maryland to a 0-0 tie. Following a rocky middle stretch, EKU hit its stride at the end of the season, going 3-1-1 in their last five games and ending the season w ith a resounding 2-1 victory over the University of Evansville. The Colonels' vast improvement on the soccer field a year ago was legitimized in the form of OVC postseason awards. For the first time in program history, the Colonels placed two players on the second team All-OVC -junior defender Jessica Goshert and sophomore midfielder Carly Muller. Basalyga' s team also won its third straight OVC Team Sportsmanship Award. The Colonels have now won the award every year of its existence. The Colonel soccer program continues to thrive in the classroom, as well. Basalyga was recently bestowed w ith EKU' s 2008 Coaches Academic Enhancement Award, honoring her commitment to recruiting dedicated student-athletes and placing a high emphasis on academics within the program. Since sh e started the Colonel soccer program in 2005, Basalyga has coached six Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society inductees, 16 Presidential Scholars, and 38 Colonel Scholars. Basalyga led Eastern to new heights in its second season, setting program marks in goals (14) and wins (four) in 2006. The Colonels also christened n ewly built EKU Soccer Field in the 2006 season opener with a 2-0 victory over regionally-ranked Detroit, and finished the year with an impressive 4-2-2 record at the new facility. Meanwhile, forward Georgia Koromelas earned a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer team, the second straight season EKU landed a student-athlete on the squad. In 2005, leading a squad featuring a majority of true freshmen, Eastern Kentucky survived a challenging non-conference schedule and introduced itself to the Ohio Valley Conference with a w in over eventual conference regular season and tournament champion Samford, which advanced to the second round of the N CAA tou rnament. Under Basalyga's guidance, tw o student-athletes received postseason honors in 2005 as defender Janine Davie was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and goalkeeper Christina Graul was selected as second team All-OVC. Outside of the collegiate game, Basalyga continues to make her name known in coaching circles as she is currently involved in the Kentucky Olympic Developmen t Program. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Basalyga spent four years working w ith the University of Toledo women's soccer team. Basalyga joined the Rockets' staff in 2001 as a graduate assistant and, tw o - 6- www .ekusports.com �Assistant Coaches years later, was promoted to the top assistant position. While at Toledo, Basalyga aided in all aspects of the program, gaining experience in field coaching, implementing of practice p lans and recruiting. The Rockets' 2004 recruiting class was nationally recognized, ranking 14th in the Great Lakes Region. A four-year letterwinner on the University of Maryland women's soccer team, Basalyga h elped the Terrapins advance to the NCAA College Cup in fou r consecutive seasons. The three-year starter tallied eight goals, nine assists and 25 points throughout her career. During her senior campaign, Basalyga set the school record for most goals (fou r) and most points (nine) in an NCAA tournament. As a senior, Basalyga, who was recruited by former U.S. women 's national team coach April Heinrichs prior to h er departure to Un iversity of Virginia, helped lead the team to a program-best 4-3-1 mark in the ACC and a second-place finish. Her freshman year, the Terrapins reached the NCAA quarterfinal round, their best showing ever, set a school record for w ins in a season (19) and went 16 consecutive games without a loss. Basalyga was an all-city and all-league player at Turpin High School and spent four years with the Olympic Development Region II team. In addition, sh e attended the U.S. youth national training camp on three different occasions. Her father, John, after coaching the boy's soccer team at her high school alma mater for 24 years, is beginning his sixth season as the men's soccer coach at North ern Kentucky University. The Cincinnati, Ohio native received her bachelor's degree in art studio from Maryland in 2001 and later earned a m aster's degree in recreation and leisure studies from Toledo. She is the daughter of John and Linda Basalyga and h as one brother, Ryan (26), and one sister, Courtney (25). She comes to EKU from the Northwest Missouri State women 's soccer p rogram, where she served two years as a graduate assistant. "I'm really excited to have Deborah on staff," head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "I think she is an excellent addition to our program, and shares a passion for being a part of a young team, which is exactly wh at we need right now . Deborah is mature beyond her years, and I am confident that she w ill have a strong impact on our growin g program." Before her two years on staff at Northwest Missouri State as a graduate assistant, Benakis was a two-year captain on Iowa State's women's soccer team, where she played from 2002-05. At Iowa State, she started all 79 games of her career, and in 2005 participated in the NCAA women's soccer tournament. Ben akis also garnered several team awards while at Iowa State, including the 2003 Leadership Award and the Hard Hat A ward in 2002 and 2004. Before arriving at Iow a State, Benakis was a w inner on several different levels. From 1999-2001, she played on the Illinois state team for the Olympic Development Program. From 1999-2000, Benakis played in the Region 2 Regional Pool. She was an Illinois State Cup champion in 2001 and 2002, while p laying for the Eclipse Soccer Club. She fared just as w ell in high school, helping her squad win the Illinois high school soccer state championship in 1999 and 2000. He comes to Richmond following a highly successful career in front of the net at Berea College. A native of Berea, Ky., Williams played high school soccer at Madison Southern High. H e also played for the Lexington Futbol Club during his high school years, and was a goalkeeper on the Kentucky State Olympic Development Program from 2002-03. Williams was a three year starter at keeper for the Berea College Mountaineers from 2003-06. He was named all-KIAC from 200406, and was recognized as all-region XII in 2005. Williams currently plays goalie for the Kentucky Wanderers Futbol Club. Aside from his manager duties at EKU, Williams stays busy in the world of soccer. H e is a staff member at SoccerPlus goalkeeping school, as well as the Director of Goalkeeping for the Kentucky Rush club soccer team. "Our goal is to qualify for the conferen ce tournament," head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "The six seniors wh o started the program really want to leave their m ark, and because we've n ever been there, getting to the conference tournament would be that mark. It would be their legacy." The Colonels posted a program-best record of 4-11-3 in 2007. They showed flashes of brilliance - a 0-0 tie against nationallyranked Maryland on the road in the season opener and scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of a match against OVC foe Jacksonville State. They also end ed the season on a tear, going 3-1-1 in their last five games, including a 2-0 shutout at Tennessee Tech and a resounding 2-1 defeat of the University of Evansville in the season finale. Consistency was where EKU faltered a year ago. The Colonels simply could n ot string together a group of quality outings. Basalyga, however, has reason to believe that will be different in 2008. "If we can keep outside distractions to a minimum, play consistent soccer and focus on being a team of student-athletes for the next three months, I think we're good enough to get to the conference tournament," Basalyga said . Basalyga' s optimism is far from unwarranted. From a team that broke nearly every single-game and single-season record a year ago, the Colonels reh1m 10 starters. They also have a fully-stocked class of six senior lead ers this season, which is som ething the EKU women's soccer program has lacked since its inception. Joining those returnees w ill be a class of freshmen that were ranked third in the OVC by Soccer Buzz magazine. The class which features two goalies, two defenders and two midfielders is the third straight top-three recruiting class Basalyga has brought to Richmond. Even with a core of veteran leaders and a crop of talented freshm en, a taxing non-conference schedule ensures that the road will not be easy for Basalyga and the Colonels. EKU opens the season against Western Kentucky, w ho went 14-3-3 last season en route to w inning its conference. Then the Colonels embark on a grueling five game road trip that features games against Chattanooga, Fresno State, San Francisco, Akron, and Cleveland State. This all comes before the rigors of an always-challenging OVC schedule. Despite the tough schedule, Basalyga remains confident, so long as her Colonels rely on the fundamentals. "We have to do the small things to win," Basalyga said. "If we do the small things, and we continue to believe in who we are as a program, and what we've been building here over the last four years, we11 have a successful season." Goallkeepe['§ It was baptism by fire last season as the Colonels put two freshmen in goal, Stephanie Lynch and Morgan Buzzell. Both performed admirably at the toughest position in soccer. Lynch p layed in 17 games and made 126 saves, 19 of them coming in a record-breaking performance against Maryland. Buzzell played in three games last season and made 18 saves. Both players return this season w ith a year of much-needed Division I experience under their belts. Lynch and Buzzell will be joined by two new goalkeepers, freshmen Amanda Carta and Emma Werner. Carta, out of Silver Springs, Md. led St. Vincent Pallotti High to a conference championship as a senior, recording three straight 1-0 shutouts in the p layoffs. Werner, out of Maineville, Ohio, had only one goal scored on her during the entire 2007 season. While Lynch will more than likely be the starter on open ing day, Basalyga expects all four young keepers to compete against each other for playing time. "Our keeper situation is good for everyone, and I defin itely think it's going to create a competitive atmosphere," Basalyga said. "Whoever is the most consistent day-in and day-out w ill be the starting keeper com e gam e time." D efe[!Lcdle['§ Despite losing dependable defender Jessica Doyle to graduation, Basalyga is confident the Colonel back line will h old in 2008. "We focused on our defensive system a lot in the spring," Basalyga said. "And I think our defenders are a h eck of a lot more confident now than they were at this time last year." Junior Jessica Goshert, a durable and oftentimes dominating player, will lead the Colonel defense at center back. Goshert played in all 90 minutes of most games last season on her way to being named second team All-OVC. She also scored a goal off a header in the win over Jacksonville State. Sophomore Ashley Green will accompany Goshert on defense. Green led the team last season, and set a single-season record, with three assists. She also scored a goal in the season-ending w in over Evansville. Goshert and Green will be join ed in the back by experienced senior Wendy Hoots, junior Maddy Shumaker and sophomores Gabriella Wolf and Betsy Keithley. Basalyga also n oted that freshmen Jessie DaPisa, w hose club team recently placed third at US nationals, and Stephanie Murray will be competing for playing time in the back line. Muller was named second team All-OVC in 2007 after being one of just two Colonels to notch both an assist and a goal during the season. She scored against Western Kentucky, and sh e assisted a goal in the win over Jacksonville State. Imsande scored three goals in her rookie season of 2006, and she played in all 18 games last season as a sophom ore. Meanwhile, Junior Eva Hollenberg and sophomore Courtney Nestor will see time out w ide. Hollenberg started four games last season and Nestor started five. Freshmen Heather Bruce and Jessica Reed should also see time as midfielders. Bruce won a Canadian club soccer national championship as a member of the U-17 Team Ontario. Reed comes to Richmond from Indiana, where her club team recently placed third at the US national tournament. "Playing time in the midfield is going to come down to: who's the most consistent?" Swearingen holds eight career and single-season offensive records at EKU, including career goals (six) and games played (52). Last year, she became the first player in EKU history to score two goals in a game when she punched in two first half goals in the win over Jacksonville State. Clay Hospital, the EKU soccer complex is the home of a 115x75 yard field with Bermuda grass maintained by an in-ground irrigation system. The field is equipped with World Cup draw back goals, a state of the art scoreboard, 25-foot high nets behind the goals, a 33-foot video tower and press box to go with covered player benches to add comfort for the home and visiting teams. The Bratzke Center and staff, located in Alumni Coliseum, is designed to aid EKU' s student-athletes in all facets of their academic pursuits. Our goal is for student-athletes at EKU to have a great athletic and academic experience, and graduate with Colonel pride. Student-athletes at EKU have done a tremendous job academically, with 50 percent earning a 3.0 GPA and a record high 34 percent being named to the OVC commissioner's honor roll with at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Almost 200 student-athletes were named Colonel Scholars during the past two semesters as well. Meanwhile, 69 student-athletes were recognized at the EKU Academic Honors breakfast as Presidential Scholars and other various academic awards. Named after Chad Bratzke, the former EKU All-American and Indianapolis Colts' defensive lineman whose generous donation helped make the center possible, the Bratzke Center meets the needs of current EKU student-athletes. The 3,000-square foot Bratzke Center includes a tutoring center, a 27-station computer lab, an academic advising office suite, a teaching classroom and quiet study area. Student-athletes at EKU come in and utilize the center for studying, requesting and meeting with tutors, checking their e-mail or stop by for advising. The professional staff is trained to work w ith student-athletes in advising, class scheduling, monitoring academic progress and assisting student-athletes with academic su ccess strategies. The Bratzke Center is headed by Dr. Randy Kennedy, Director of Student Athlete Academic Support. EKU annually finishes among the leaders in the Ohio Valley Conference men's and women's All-Sports Trophy standings and the Colonels have won the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Academic Achievement Banner eight times (1988-92, 199495, 1997-98, 1999-00, 2001-02). Eastern Kentucky's student-athletes benefit from one of the finest athletic training facilities anywhere in the country. The training room is located in the Moberly Building adjacent to the athletic weight room and is open for use by any EKU student-athlete. The large space is occupied by the most modern training and rehabilitation equipment available. The training room features several tables used during treatment and rehabilitation, taping tables, a wet room that features whirlpools and a four-foot-deep rehab pool that includes a submerged treadmill for aquatic rehab exercises. The area also features all of the latest modalities, helping get injured athletes back into the game as quickly as possible. The athletic training room also houses an examination room used by team doctors. The physicians are regularly on site and perform evaluations, while assisting the training staff in ensuring the health of every student-athlete. For those sports that are primarily located in Alumni Coliseum, there is a satellite training room area that features a treatment and taping area as well as rehabilitation equipment. Director of Sports Medicine David T. Green supervises all of EKU' s efforts, and is joined by full-time assistants David Brajuha, Tiffany Napier and Tim Pike, as well as a host of graduate assistants and students who are involved in the University's athletic training program. Green, who had been the head athletic trainer at Tennessee Tech for 23 years, was hired in the summer of 2008 and works primarily with the women's basketball program. "We are extremely forhmate to have David Green join our staff," EKU Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. "His experience and expertise will make him a valuable member of our department as we continue to improve the sports medicine service to our student-athletes." Green earned his master's degree in health education from EKU in 1977. He then went on to serve five years as an assistant professor and assistant athletic trainer under Dr. Bobby Barton at Eastern from 1980-85. A member of several national and state athletic trainers' associations, Green is currently serving on the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Honors and Awards Committee. Whether it's arts and entertainment, recreation, or shopping and dining out you are looking for, Richmond has it all. With more than 100 buildings in Richmond on the National Register of Historic Places and three areas on the National Register of Historic Districts, it is one of Kentucky's finest restored 19th Century comm ercial districts. Arts and entertainment take center-stage with the Eastern Kentucky University theatre program. They offer several show s each year from classical theatre to modern musicals. Local artistic talents are on display year round at Gallery On Main. This is a perfect showcasing of local talent and an opportunity for community involvement. There is n ever any lack of recreational activities in Richmond. An array of parks and recreational centers across the city offers something for everyone. Lake Reba Recreational complex includes golf, little league baseball and softb all fields, soccer, fishing and a water park which opened in the summer of 2008. The Richmond Recreation Center facilities include a gymnasium, playground and large meeting rooms. If it's shopping you want, downtown Richmond can accommodate you. Locally owned businesses line the historic streets of downtown Richmond with everything from fine antiquities to exquisite jewelry. There is a w ide variety of stores at the Richmond Mall as well. The mall offers shoppers convenience and style. Dining isn't hard to find either. Family-owned and m ajor chain restaurants give Richmond a unique variety of menus. Local hot spots include Madison Gardens, which is uniquely Richmond, to restaurants such as Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, Outback Steakhouse and O'Charley's. Whatever your pallet craves, Richmond dining offers a variety of tastes made to satisfy. N ever far from mainstream, Richmond offers the comforts of simplicity with the convenience of the city. A B:rief Richmond! I-Iislto:ry Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, a Revolutionary War soldier. In 1798, the Kentucky Legislature authorized the moving of the Madison County seat from nearby Milford to land owned by Colonel Miller. The move was bitterly opposed by about 300 residents of the Milford area and a fight to retain the seat resulted between Dave Kennedy, who represented the Milford location, and William Kearly, who represented the new site. Although history does not record the results of the brawl, the county approved the move in March of 1798 and two acres of land were purchased from Colonel Miller. Court was held in his barn.
