�Country
Both the men's and women's 1990 teams will be trying to defend their OVC
championship. The women' s team has now captured eight consecutive conference titles
, while the 1989 men's team swept the first five spots to win the conference title with a
perfect score of 15.
The EKU harriers host the conference meet this fall at the Arlington Golf
Course. The conference meet is a seven-team meet that will start at 10:30 a.m. on
October 27. While both teams will try to defend their titles, the main goal for the season
is to score better in the district meet. EKU participates in the Southeast District which
has traditionally been one of the toughest meets in the country.
In 1989, the women finished sixth and the men 17th out of roughly 35 schools
at the district meet.
The 1990 men's team is one of the largest and deepest in Colonel history with
a large group of freshmen. The coaching staff is very optimistic of the new talent on the
team.

Rick Erdmann
Men's and Women's

Cross Country Coach
Rick Erdmann is beginning his 12th season as head track and cross country
coach at EKU. Since taking over at Eastern in 1979, he has led the Eastern women to
eight OVC cross country titles. Both the men and women are the current defending OVC
champs.
Erdmann came to Eastern from Hagerstown (Md.) Junior College where served
as head track and cross country coach from 1971-79. He was selected in 1979 as the
national junior college cross country coach of the year after leading his team to a second
place finish in the national meet. Since starting at Eastern, Erdmann has won more than
10 OVC Coach of the Year honors for men's and women's cross country.

Bob, 25, comes to Eastern with one year high school and three year's junior
college coaching experience... while at Mohawk Valley C. C., in Utica, N. Y., Backus
coached several region champions on the track, both individuals and relays.
Backus was twice named Regional Cross Country "Coach of the Year" .. .is
a T.A.C. Level I certified coach ... prides himself as a motivator and a communicator
with his athletes .. .is pursuing a Master's in Physical Education.
