2001-02 Outlook
2001-02 Season Outlook
The 2000-01 Lady Colonel basketball season
was one full of accomplishments, national and team
records and wel l-deserved awards. Finishing the
season with a record of 22-6, leading all of Division
I basketball with 88.4 points per game, earning a
berth in the preseason NIT. and setting numerous
team and individual records, the 2000-01 version
of the Lady Colonels will definitely be a tough act to
follow. With a talented and experienced lineup of
players returning, including three starters and 10
letterwinners, the 2001-02 team appears to be
up t o the challenge.
Head coach Larry Joe Inman, the Ohio Valley
Conference's reigning Coach of the Year, has strong
senior leadership on this year's squad in guards
Zoey Artist and Mikki Bond, and forwards Charlotte
Sizemore and Synisha Smith.
Bond and Sizemore, both four-year veterans,
were regular starters for the Lady Colonels last season. Bond averaged 8.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and
3.9 assists per game as the starting point guard.
The 5-7 Knoxvi lle native also ranked e ighth in the
OVC with her 2.07 steals per contest. Sizemore is
the top returning scorer from last season when she
poured in 12.7 points, pulled down 4 .2 rebounds
and dished out 4.0 assists per game. The second
team AII-OVC selection also led the team with 18
blocked shots and was second on the team and
fourth in the conference with 61 steals (2 .18 per
game).
Artist, who will likely step into a more permanent starting role this season for EKU, made eight
starts last year and served as the ultimate "Sixth
Man" for the Lady Colonels, averaging 9.9 points,
4.1 boards and 2.4 assists. Smith, a transfer from
Shelton State in Alabama, averaged 6.9 points,
3 .6 rebounds and was second on the team with
15 blocked shots in her first season with Eastern
Kentucky.

Junior Teresa McNair is the third and final starter returning from a year ago. McNair
led the OVC and finished 31st in all of NCAA
Division I in steals with an average of 3.0
per game (83). Not only a threat on the
defensive side of the ball, McNair tallied 8.8
points and is the top rebounder returning
with 5 .4 boards last season. Fellow juniors,
6-3 center Jill Perry and 5-7 guard Lyndsey
Warbington, also return to the Lady Colonels in 2001-02. Perry and Warbington were
co-winners of the Most Improved award last
season by their coaches and teammates.
Perry notched 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds
in 21 games for EKU last season, while
Warbington averaged 2.6 points and 0 .9
rebounds in 27 contest s.
The sophomore class is one full of talent and valuable experience. Guard Katie
Kelly provided an offensive spark for the Lady
Colonels, averaging 10.3 points, 3 .1 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 2000-01. Kelly
also led the team and ranked ninth in the
nation with a free throw percentage of
88.8%. Forward Le igh Carr and center
Lyndsey McClellan make up the rest of the
sophomore class . Carr saw action in all 28
of EKU's games and averaged 3.1 points
and 2.1 rebounds, while McClellan contributed 2.2 points and 2.3 boards until a hand
injury ended her season after 15 games.
The Lady Colonels welcome four freshmen to
the 2001-02 roster. Candis Cook, a 5-11 forward ,
averaged 15 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and
three assists as a senior at Texas A & M Consolidated High School last year. Cook earned the team's
Most Valuable Player award and was also selected
Best Defensive Player by her peers at A & M.
Miranda Eckerle, a 6-0 forward, recorded
18.7 points and 9.8 rebounds
for Franklin County (IN) High
School during her senior campaign. She was also a member of the North/South All-Star
team and the Indiana All-Star
team.
Ashleigh Huffman is a 5-10
forward who averaged 19.7
points, 8 boards and 6 assists
as a senior at Nitro (WV) High
School. An All-County and AllConference selection, she was
also named second team AllState last year.
Kristie Miller is the final
freshman for EKU . A 5-8 guard,
Miller poured in 22 points, 5
rebounds and 4 assists as a
senior at Perry Central (KY)
High School. Miller ranked in
the top 10 in three-po int

of the 2 ,000-point club at PCHS.
Inman enters his 14'" season at the helm of
the Lady Colonels with high expectations for his
club.
"I am very hopeful that we will have another
successful season t his year, even though we are
playing a very tough schedule this season," said
Inman. "We have a good nucleus of great players
back this year and they are very exciting to watch
and to coach. Not only are they good players, but
they' re also wonderful individuals . Good things happen when you surround yourself with good people
and that's what we feel like we have this season. "

"We have been very fortunate in having good people, as well
as good basketball players, which in turn creates a positive situation," commented Inman. "We just look for players that are
down to earth with good work ethics. "
Work ethic has never been a problem for the seven-time
OVC Coach of the Year. He has set st andards at every position
he has held, a trail of success that leads all the way back to the
early 1970's. His fi rst high school coaching job, at Mt. Juliet

When Larry Joe Inman became the head women's basketball coach at Eastern Kentucky University, the question
was not if he would win, but
how much and how soon.
After 13 seasons, the question has only been partially answered as milestones and
firsts continue to follow Inman everywhere he goes .
Under lnman's guidance, Eastern won its first outright OVC
regular season championship in 1996-97 and, in the process ,
set a league record for conference victories with 16 in completing a fantastic 24-6 season. This, com ing off the heels of a
share of its first-ever OVC title, a quad championship in 199495. In 1997-98, Inman added to the championship trophies at
Eastern as he led the Lady Colonels to a share of the OVC title
once again.
With the return of three starters and the addition of several
outstanding recruits, the Lady Colonels could be battling for the
conference crown again in 2001-02.
Eastern's program has been one of consistency in the
1990's, only finishing out of the top half of the league standings
once . Over the past nine seasons , Eastern has an impressive
record of 147-103, a .588 winning percentage.
The type of teamwork needed to accomplish so much is a
direct reflection on the coaching philosophy that has brought the
Lady Colonels to the next level.
"Each person must give of them selves for the one common
goal - to win and be successful - not what they want, but what
is the common goal for all, " explains Inman.
This theme of teamwork has created success for the program, but individual talent has not gone unnoticed either. In
1996-97, Chrissy Roberts won the College Basketball Hall of
Fame's Ed Steitz Award and the AT&T Long Distance Award for
leading NCAA Division I players in three-point percentage. For
her outstandingjunioryear, her uniform, practice gear and shoes
were placed into the Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. In
1997-98, Roberts continued her excellence as she was seventh in the nation in 3-point accuracy and fourth in free throw
percentage on her way to earning accolades.
Inman has also coached OVC Player of the Year Kim Mays
(1994-95), as well as the first-t ime selection of two EKU players to the AII-OVC first team, which has now been accomplished
twice. In 1995-96, In man coached Samantha Young and

the ranks to the helm of the Middle Tennessee State University
Lady Raiders. His first collegiate coaching stint was just as successful, capturing five regular season Ohio Valley Conference
crowns in eight years. He was named Coach of the Year three
times and compiled a 161-73 record at the school. The Lady
Raiders won a total of nine regular season and tournament
championships during his tenure, including four consecutive regular season AND tournament titles from 1983-86.
His accomplishments at Eastern Kentucky have been no
less remarkab le, with Coach of the Year honors and titles following Inman to Richmond. He became the only coach to be
recognized for Coach of the Year honors at two different OVC
schools after his selection in 1990 for that honor. He has since
won that honor at Eastern in '94-95, '96-97, and again last
season (00-01). He has also become the school's all-t ime
leader in wins and winning percentage (207, .580). With every
win the Eastern mentor earns, he raises his own standard for
both the school and the conference for career wins .
Not all of his accomplishments have been on the OVC level,
as Inman has been involved in national competition both at Eastern and Middle Tennessee. He led the Lady Raiders to four
NCAA Regional appearances, where MTSU won one third of its
games. In 1996-97, he led Eastern to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance at Georgia. He was also nominated for the
WBCA District 9 Coach of the Year honors in 1980 and again in
1993. Since 1999, Inman has been named to Who's Who by
Strathmore's and Marqui's five different times. He was also
named Man of the Year by the American Biographical Institute in
2001.
Inman is a graduate of Austin Peay State University, where
he received his bachelor's degree in 1970. He received his
master's degree from Tennessee State University in 1978.
Inman is married to the former Bobbie Gene Follis of
Shelbyville TN . They have one son, Jody, and two daughters,
Latrice and Tiffany.

Colonel Club/Staff

Since 1978, the Colonel Club has been your connection to su pporting Eastern Kentucky University Athletics.
Be more than just a fan by providing financial support that is essential to our pursuit of academic excellence, OVC Championshi ps
and NCAA post season competition for over 330 student-athletes.
As a Colonel Club member, you can take great pride in knowing your tax-deductible contribution
provides additional financial support for student-athlete scholarships, team
travel, equipment, uniforms , computers, tutorial support and many more
special needs.
Based on the level of you r annual gift to the Colonel Club, priority seating is
available at Roy Kidd Stadium and Paul McBrayer Arena. These contribut ors receive first priority to purchase the best seats available at our home
football and basketball games.
With the increased cost of higher education and as intercollegiate competition continues to rise, your support is critical to our success as we strive to
build an even stronger Colonel athletic program.
Methods of support include direct contribut ions, matching gifts, gifts of
securities and planned gifts. All gifts to the Colonel Club are recognized
on a Ju ly 1st to June 30th fiscal year.

Paul S. McBrayer Arena
Alumni Coliseum and Paul S. McBrayer Arena, which first opened for basketball action in 1963,
has been the home court for Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball since the 1976-77
season when the team moved from the Weaver Health Building.
Located on the southern slope of the EKU campus, Alumni Coliseum forms the nucleus of a
thoughtfully planned sports complex. The Coliseum is a massive physical plant and features a great
triumph in architectural design with its modern laminated cross-arched roof - the world's largest of
its kind - spanning 309 feet and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board feet of lumber form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches
gracefully 8 1 feet above the floor level, is southern pine fin ished in its natural beauty.
In addition to McBrayer Arena,
which seats 6,500 for basketball
games and 8,000 for other programs, the building contains four basketball courts in an auxiliary gymnasium on the east end, two classrooms , 20 offices, both indoor and
outdoor swimming pools, shower and
locker rooms, a projection room, a
training room and weight rooms. A
hydraulic-operated stage is located
on the east end of the main arena
floor.
Since the women's basketball
program began playing its games in
Alumni Coliseum, the Lady Colonels
have compiled an overall home
record of 186 wins and 106 losses.

Moberly Building
One of the most functional facilities available to Eastern Kentucky University athletics is the Harry Moberly Building, completed in the Fall of
2000 and dedicated in November of 2000.
The building was named for former Eastern student-athlete, founding member of the EKU Colonel Club and active supporter of EKU athletics,
Harry Moberly. A quarterback for the Eastern football team from 1931-34, Moberly's visionary leadership was instrumental in establishing,
building and strengthening the Colonel Club, EKU's intercollegiate athletics booster organization.
The building, located adjacent to Roy Kidd Stadium, is a 40,000 square-foot, $ 4. 75 million state-of-t he-art facility.
The first floor features a strength and weight development area which was dedicated in November of 2000 as t he Raymond E. Giltner
Conditioning Center. The Giltner Center, named for the late Raymond Giltner who ,--- ...,..,,.,- ,-,:-:rserved two terms as president of the EKU National Alumni Assocation, as a director of the EKU Foundation and vice chair of the Foundation's Planned Giving
Committee, houses equipment designed to help build strength, muscle development and rehabilitation for EKU's student athletes.
Also located on the first floor is the main training facility for EKU's 16 intercollegiate athletics teams. The facility provides an in-ground hydrotherapy pool with
rehabi litation equipment , three above-ground therapeutic pools, X-ray equipment
and examination rooms .
A 6,000 square-foot physical activity area/laboratory for physical education
activities and the study of motion is also featured on the first floor.
The second floor features a wellness center designed to facilitate aerobic
conditioning. The center includes aerodynamic equipment for bicycling, stairstep aerobics and ot her health-club type equipment.
Also on t he second floor are three large classrooms, physiology and computer
laboratories and state-of-the-art offices for the Colonel football coaching staff,
along with offices for several EKU physical education professors.

Academics
Academics at Eastern
While the Lady Colonels have been accomplishing a great deal on the court du ring Coach Larry lnman's tenure, they have
also been putting another streak together in the classroom - a perfect graduation rate. Every Eastern player in the past seven
years who has exhausted her eligibil ity, has gone on to receive a bachelor's degree from EKU. To hear Inman talk, one quickly
realizes his bel ief in the concept of the student-ath lete .
"The greatest thing is to see you walk across th at stage and
receive your diploma. Then I know you can do something with your
life," Inman tells his players.

The Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success center (SAAS) is one of the newest faciliti es at Eastern Kentucky
University. The SAAS Center, located in Alumni Coliseum, is designed to aid EKU 's student-athletes in al l facets of their academ ic
pursuits.
Included in the new academic facility are tutoring facilities, a quiet study area, a computer lab and administrative offices. Former
EKU All-American and current Indianapolis Colts' defensive lineman, Chad Bratzke, was instrumental in furnishing the area properly
with his generous gift to EKU Athletics.
The Academic Success Center is staffed by Joan Hopkins, EKU's
coordinator for academic athletic advising, and Martina Martin,
academic athletic advisor.
"The opening of the Student-Athlete Academic Success Center
has begun a new era of rededication of our athletic program to the
student in every athlet e that walks on our campus ," said Hopkins.
"In the SAAS Center, we will be providing increased academic
support to enable our students to be the best they can be in the
classroom."
EKU annually finishes among the leaders in the Ohio Valley
Conference men's and women's all-sports trophy standings and the
Colonels have won the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Academic Achievement Banner seven times ('88-'92, '94-'95, '97'98, '99-'00).

Camp/Hoopster Boosters

Camp of Superstars
Head women's basketball coach Larry Joe Inman and his staff have developed the EKU program from what was once a consistently average team to
one that is at or near the top of the Ohio Valley Conference year-in and year-out. Inman currently ranks in the top 70 among active women's basketball coaches,
with 368 career victories . In his 13 seasons with Eastern, he has led the Lady Colonels t o three of the last six OVC titles, includi ng back-to-back titles in 199697 and 1997-98.
He has set school records, winning 24 games, capturing the OVC Tournament and making the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament
in 1996-97. Inman is the only coach in school history to post back-to-back OVC titles and back-to-back 20 or more win seasons, accompl ished in 1996-97 and
1997-98. He has been the only coach in school history to post 20 or more win seasons, a feat he has accomplished four times at Eastern.
Inman has surrounded himself with a great st aff. Assistant coaches Meghan Burke, Chrissy Roberts and Curtis Metten are helping Inman build the EKU
program to where it is today. Burke is in her first year at Eastern, while Roberts and Metten return to Eastern for their second season. Al l will be very instrumental
in establishing the Eastern program as one of the best in the OVC .
The 2002 Camp of Superstars will once again be held on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in the Alumni Coliseum. Eastern is located in
Richmond, approximately 25 mi les south of Lexington, just off 1-75.

Ohio Valley Conferenee
History of the OVC
Entering its 54th yea r, the Ohio Valley
Conference continues to build on the success
that has made it the nation's eighth-oldest
NCAA Division I conference.
The OVC 's proud past dates back to 1948,
but seeds for the new league were actually
planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart,
the athletics director at Murray State, Charles
(Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public
relations director at Western Kentucky, first
broached the idea of forming a new conference.
Discussions were put on hold by World War II,
but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original
institut ions combined with Morehead State,
Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.
In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer
on a much more significant scale socially.
During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first
non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions
to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall
Banks earned ath letically-relate d aid at
Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. (I n 1961,
Murphy earned football all-conference recognition at halfback.) With racial barriers broken,
the rest of the institutions in the league began
to provide educational and athletic opportun ities to African-Americans.
In the late 1970s, women's athletics began somewhat of a rebirth on the national
scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and
marketing women 's sports. Recognizing the
need to provide increased opportunities for
female athletes, the OVC established women 's
championships in the sports of basketball,
tennis and track in 1977, with cross country
and volleyball added over the next four years .
Those sports were initially governed by the
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women, but the overall strength of women's
programs in the league was demonstrated by
the automatic bids the OVC instantly received
when the NCAA became the governing body in
1982.
Through the early years of the league,
administrators wrestled with fan behavior due
to the close proxim ity of the conference members and the intense rivalries which developed.
Just as it did decades ago, the OVC took the
leadership role on what has become a national
issue. In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-ofits-kind "Sportsmanship Statement", a policy
which promotes principles of fair play, ethical
conduct and respect for one's opponent. The
statement has become a model for others to
follow across the nation, answering the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Comm ission to
improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics.

Over its 53 years, OVC teams have garnered national championships and bowl games
in football, along with national team or individual titles in the sports of rifle , cross country,
track and golf.
The OVC has also produced several Olympic athletes, wh ile some of the greatest players
in professional sports were educated at OVC
institutions. The list includes former greats such
as basketball's Clem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and two-sport sta r Steve Hamilton
(Morehead State) to present-day standouts like
basketball players Carlos Rogers (Tennessee
State), Popeye Jones (Murray State) and Bubba
Wells (Austin Peay), football players Chad
Bratzke (Eastern Kentucky), Chris Watson (Eastern Illinois). Marquis Walker (Southeast Missouri) and Brent Alexander (Tennessee State),
baseball players Kirk Reuter (Mu rray State),
Kerry Robinson (Southeast Missouri) and Willie
Blair (Morehead State) and professional golfer
Jeff Sluman (Tennessee Tech).
The playing field isn't the only place where
OVC athletes are working hard. The league also
recognizes excellence in the classroom. The
prestigious OVC Academic Achievement Banner is awarded annually to the league school
whose athletes produce the highest grade point
average when compared to the general student
body. Also, six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and fema le athletes,
while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or named to the Commissioner's Honor
Roll. Additionally, the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honoroftheformer Morehead
State student-athlete, coach and athletics director, is presented annually to a junior
or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributions who best
exemplifies the characteristics of
sportsmansh ip and citizenship.

legiate athletics admin istration for increased
involvement of unive rs ity presidents in setting
policies and making rules. The president s of
OVC institutions , however, have always governed the Confe rence, long before presidential
governance became a nat ional t heme.
The OVC sponsors t he following spo rts:
baseball, basketball , cross country, footba ll ,
golf, tennis and track for men, and basketba ll,
cross country, golf, soccer, softba ll, tennis,
t rack and volleyball for women. The OVC also
sponsors t he combined men 's and women's
s port of rifle.
Over t he last few years, t he league has
grown, not on ly in the number of athletics
opportunities it is providing for students , but in
terms of t he number of institutions in t he
league. In the early 1990's, the league expanded by two members, add ing Southeast
Missouri State Univers ity and t he Univers ity of
Tennssee at Martin. The league grew again in
1996-97 with the addition of Eastern Illinois
University. Other current representat ives include charte r members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray
State Univers ity, along with Aust in Peay State
University, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technologica l Univers ity. Jacksonville
State and Samford join the OVC in 2003,
exr: 0 n::ling the conference to 11 members for
t he first time.
