Dr. Hanly Funderburk
EKU President

I

t is our hope that this guide conveys to both

media and prospective student-athletes part of

the pride we at Eastern Kentucky University

have in our program of intercollegiate athletics. Our
women's basketball program has a proud tradition
within our annals.

Coach Inman has built a sound program at
Eastern , where he continues to build on his record
as the active coach with the most victories in the
Ohio Valley Conference. In the 1991-92 season,
the Lady Colonels recorded the first 20-win season
in the school's women's basketball history.

Athletics is integrated into the academic
structure at Eastern, creating an environment de-

signed to help participants succeed both in the
classroom and on the playing field or court. Coach
Larry Inman is a valuable member of our coaching
staff and is also a qualified member of our teaching
faculty. His teams have found success academically as well as athletically.

The Campus Beautiful
T

he nickname, "The Campus Beautiful," aptlyd~scribes
the Eastern Kentucky University campus. It 1s truly a

beautiful atmosphere in which to live and learn .
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's system of
re gional universities, is the culmination of more than a
century of higher education development on its 350-acre
main campus in Richmond. Today's modern Eastern offers

more than 160 degree programs in its nine academic
colleges and graduate school including education, allied
health and nursing, computer science, business, sciences,
law enforcement, recreation and environ mental resources
that provide educational opportunities to meet society's
demands.
The pursuit of academic excellence has been pledged
as one of the foremost objectives of Dr. Hanly Funderburk,
who has begun his eighth full academic year as Eastern's
eighth president.

Lady Colonel Basketball

The University seeks to fulfill the "living-while-learningn
concept by providing comfortable living conditions for almost 7,000 students in campus residence halls. Eastern
can accommodate more students on campus than any
other university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic institution, Eastern is also noted for its program of intercollegiate alhletics and recreational sports. The accomplishments of the Colonel athletic teams are a source of great
pride for the student body and campus community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment opportunities as
nationally known lecturers, artists and entertainers appear
on campus. A wide variety of student and faculty musical
groups also provide a fine selection of entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the athletic arena
or campus life, Eastern continues its stride toward excellence.

Lady Colonels Becoming Title Contender

hen

Inman took over the Eastern Kentucky.

the hook. Eve,ybodywanled EKU on their schedule. Anyone
who won only 23 games over the last three years is a
welcomed opponent. A sort of sacrificial lamb if you will.

But after winning in double-digits for three years and
turning in a record setting 20-9 season last year, lnman's
phone isn't quite as busy as it was. As a matter of fact, teams

are dropping l he Lady Colonels to pursue other avenues.
' Everybody wanted to play us when I first got here. My
phone was ringing all the time,' said Inman. ' But our program
has made definile progress over the four years to where we
are contenders, not pretenders. We are battling the best
teams in the conference (Ohio Valley) each and fNery yearfor
the crown.
' We are also a team with a legitimate shol at making the

NCAA or NIT playoffs at the end of the year.

Eastern

Kentucky has never been at that level before and that is a
direcl resuh of hard worK and effort from the players and the
staff. The program is something Eastern Kentucky University
can be proud cl."
And the 1992-93 version cl the Lady Colonels should be
no different. Inman lost only two starters, guards Cheryl
Jones and two-time All-America Angie Cox, the team's leading scorer (16.8 wg). But he returns a strong nucleus,
including All-America center Jaree Goodin-Wiseman. The
senior averaged 16.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last
season. Senr:>rs Segena Mackeroy (8.8 rpg) and SueZylslra
join Goodin along lhe frontline.

Joining the battle for p laying time underneath the basket will
be juniors Shannah McIntosh and Sheletha McEaddy. Freshman Jerilyn Cushing and junior college transfer Kim Roberts
wil fight the veterans for starting roles.
Sophomore Maisha Thomas, named1o theAU-OVC Freshman Team, should be a leader in the battle to replace Cox a nd
Jones. Sophomore Samantha Young, and freshman sensation Stephanie Davis will figure in the decision somehow.
Freshmen Kim Jones and Tiffany Davis should see p laying
time. Former Miss Basketball in Kentocky Kim Mays will join the
l earn as a sophomore in January.
1nman will also have lo find room for senior speedster
T iffany Mayfield, third in the OVC with 75 steals, and junior
Rhonda Hardesty. Both players have !he ability lo play guard
o r fOf"Ward.
The Lady Colonels highlight their 1992-93 schedule with an
appearance in the Sun and Fun Classic, Jan. 2-4, in Miami, Fl.
Toefield includes national powers Iowa, Te"131eand Coloraclo.
Eastern will visit Metro Conference biggie Louisville and the
University of Kentucky, of the Southeastern Conference.
But one game that already has people talking around
Richmond is the regular-season home finale. The Tennessee
Lady Volunteers, who will probably be ranked in the top five in
the na1ion at that time, will visit McBrayer A rena on Feb. 24,

1993.
Eastem's OVC slate looks tough again as !he lady Colonels
figure to battle Tennessee Tech, Middle T enoesseeand Southeast Missouri for the conference crown. The University of
T enoessee at Martin will join the OVC asa memberlhis season.

lumni Coliseum and Paul S. McBrayer Arena, which first
opened for basketball action in 1963, has been the home
court for Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball
since the 1976-77 season when the team moved from Weaver
Health Building.
Located on a southern slope of the EKU campus, Alumni
Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully planned sports
complex. The Coliseum is a massive physical plant and
feat ures a great triumph in architectural design with its modem
laminated cross-arched roof - the world's largest of its kind
- spanning 309 feet and providing an unobstructed view of
events held in the main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board
feet of lumber form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches
gracefully 81 feet above floor level, is southern pine finished
in its natural beauty.
In addition to McBrayer Arena, w hich seats 6,500 for
basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the building
contains four basketball courts in an auxiliary gymnasium on
the east end, eight classrooms, 20 offices, both indoor and
outdoor swimming pools, shower and locker rooms, a projec·
tion room, a training room and weight room. A hydraulic·
operated stage is localed al the east end of the main arena
floor.
Since the women's basketba II program began playing its
games in Alumni Coliseum, the Lady Colonels have compiled
an overall home record of 111 wins and BO losses.

And now the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonels have

some.
In the four years that Larry Joe Inman has been at the
helm of the EKU women's basketball team, the program has
been given a breath of new life. Born again, if you will.

The year before Inman took over, the Lady Colonels
went 6-20 and had not won over nine games in any of the
previous three years. EKU was a doorma1 with just about
everyone walking on top.
Under lnrnan's direction, Eastern immediately broke the
double-digit win barrier with back-to-back 12-14 records. He

improved on that during his third season, laking the Lady
Colonels 10 a 14-13 season and their firsl appearance in the

Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in six years
Last year, t he Lady Colonels reached new ground as
they brought home 20 wins, the most ever in one season in
the history of the Eastern program. During the special campaign , EKU set several school records including most points
in a game and largest margin of victory.
"We have been very fortunate in having good people as
well as good basketball players, which in turn creates a very
positive situation," said Inman . "We look fo r players that are
just down to earth good people with good work ethics. Each
person must give of themselves for one common goal-to
win and be successful-not what Ihey want, but what is the
common good for all. '
Challenges are nothing new to Inman. He is beginning
his fifth season at Eastern Kentucky University and his 13th
overall in the ave. Inman is the dean of coaches in the
conference, sporting a 10 1-34 slate against ave opposition,
including stints at Middle Tennessee Stale University and
EKU.

Career Coaching Record • 16 years
Won 345, Lost 147 {.701)
Success is all Inman has known in his basketball coaching career. He began his profession at the high school level
where he compiled a 126-24 record (.840) al Mount Juliet
High School in Nashville, Tennessee. While al Mount Juliet
High School, Inman was named Nashville Interscholastic
League Coach of the Year four times as he directed his team
to five district crowns, four regional championships, three
NIL titles and the 1977 Tennessee Class AAA state champ ionship.
lnman's coaching ability became read ily apparent to
college otticials and he quickly moved up lo take the helm of
the Middle Tennessee Stale lady Raiders. During his eight
years in Murfreesboro, he produced a record of 161-73
(.688) and took his teams to four NCAA regional tournaments
where MTSU compiled a 2-4 record against some of the
nation's top basketball teams.
His 1982-83 squad finished with a l 0-0 league record
which stood as the only unblemished mark in the OVC until
Tennessee Tech went 12-0 in 1989.
Coaching honors have come with regularity for Inman,
including the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of lhe Year for
the 1990-91 season. It was the fifth such conference honor
of his career. The 1970 Austin Peay State University gradu·
ate was nominated fort he WBCA District 9 Coach oft he Year
in 1990.
Inman has continued his winning tradition at Easlem
Kentucky University. Besides coaching the Lady Colonels to
their best season record ever, he is also the second winning est

coach in EKU history with a 58·50 overall record, behind
Dianne Murphywhowas96·101 in seven seasons. Inman,
who has the highest OVC winning average of any Eastern
coach (28-22, 7 games a season), is only three viclories
from having the best conference record of any Lady
Colonel mentor.
But success is not always what happens on the
basketball court and the personable coach knows that
Athletes in the Eastern women's basketball program are
more than just bodies. Inman sees them as individuals
with feelings and concerns.
' My sincere wish is that each player will learn alli·
tudes that will help them be successful in the workl they
live," Inman said. "By thelimelheyleave EKU, I hopethey
have developed a work ethic and a philosophy towards a
common good in life, to put this attitude to work in making
the world in which they live a more productive, positive
environment forthemselves and the people around them.·
Inman is married to the former Bobbie Gene Follis of
Shelbyville, Tennessee. Bobbie Gene is currently the
manager of Wal-Mart in Paris, Ky. Inman has one son,
Jody, 18, and two daughters, Latrice, 17, and Tiffany, 9.

lady Colonels become powerhouse,
roll to record-setting 20-9 season
Last March 15, Eastern Kentucky University head coach lany Joe
Inman was amciously waiting by his phone. You see, that was the day of
the final seleciions for 1he NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and
Eastern Kentucky University was being considered by the selection
committee for one of t he spots. That's right ... Eastern Kentucky

Thecatl never came, but that was okay. The mere fact that Eastern
was being considered for a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and t he
prestigious NIT, was reason for celebration. When Inman came to EKU
four years ago, he talked about making the Lady Colonel program a
NATIONAL contender. It took four years, some tears and a whole lot of
sweat, but he did it. And the warning shol heard round the world, if you
will, was last season's record-setting 20·9 season, marking the most wins
in one yea r in the schoors history.
The 1991 ·92 season began w ith high hopes as Inman and assistant
coach Mary A nn Grimes had gathered toge1her one of the most ta lented
teams in school history. The o nly question was could Inman mesh a ll the
talented players into one unit?
The schedule wasn't made to aid Inman in his efforts. Twoofthe lady
Colonels first four games were against Top 10 teams W estem Kenlucky
and Vanderbilt. The result of the two games were losses and EKU took
a 2-2 record into December.
Eastern knocked off Cincinnati
and then beat Florida Atla ntic in the
first round of the Dial Classic in
Tallahassee, Fl. Florida Stale beat
the lady Colonels in the finale and
Xavier upset EKU two nighls later.

'/.

1991-92

Angie Cox
"It was a big year for women's basketball for a lol o f rea sons. We went
20-9, b ut we also gave the program some validation around lhe conference and across the country," said Inman ' We had
a special group of players and they wo rked extremely hard. Easlem Kentucky women's basketball has a trad ilion now, a proud
tradition."

The lady Colonels caught fire, running off nine consecutive w ins, tying a school record . Easte rn trounced Dayton, Marshall
and the University of Tennessee al M artin before running through everyone in the Ohio Va lley Confe rence .
Poor performances at Middle Tennessee and Morehead State proved costly as the lady Colonels dropped two games
to go 13-6 on the year. Eastern got revenge on Middle Tennessee later and followed that with four more w ins to go to 186 overall.
Tennessee Stale upset EKU in overtime in Nashville and the lady Colonels dropped their next game to Tennessee Tech
to fall to 18-8 and 10-4 in the OVC.
The l ady Colonels closed out the regular season wilh a shellacking of Western Carolina, 110-56. The game set new school
records for most points scored and widest margin of victory. Whal a moment um builder to take into the OVC Toum ame nl.
EKU knocked off Middle Tennessee in the tourney opener, behind 28 points and 12 rebounds from junior center Jaree
Goodin. Goodin followed that up with 32 points and nine boards against Tennessee Tech in the finale. But ii wasn't enough
as the Lady Colonels came out on the short end of an 8 1-74 decision.
Three lady Colonels received post season honors. Freshman Maisha T homas was named to the OVC's All-Freshman
Team. Goodin was named fo urth·leam A ll-America and second-team All·OVC with senior guard Angie Cox earning first-team
all-conference and honorable-mention All-America recognition.
