Throughout his more than 31 years of service to education, or. Funderburk, 60, has held to his commitment of
excellence in the classroom. in the research laboratory and as
a university administrator.
Dr. Funderburk's baekground in many ways parallels

that of many past Eastern Kentucky University's foundersmodest beginnings as a famt>oy, earning his education,
military service, a welcomer of responsibility, enthusiastic and
impatient ol mediocrity.
A native ol Carrollton, Alabama, President Funderburk

earned the bachelor ol science degree in agricultural science
fro m Auburn University, wor1<ing on a family farm each summer between terms. Following three years in the U.S. Army,

philosophy degree in plant physiology from Louisiana State
University.
Dr. Funderburk held progressively reSjX)nsible positions
in teaching, research and administration during his years at
Auburn. Dr. Funderburk served as chancellor of Auburn
University at Montgomery, a regional university that serves
south central Alabama. The 500-acre campus and its $20
million physical plant was developed during his tenure there
and today stands as a testimonial to his administrative and
leadership ability.
On his philosophy concerning the role of Intercollegiate
athletics, Dr. Funderburk says, · 1 believe that a reasonable
program of intercollegiate ath let ics, operated in an ethical,
rational manner is an important part of an institution of higher
education. We must not lose sight of the fact that academics
are our l)f'imary purpose, and we must remember that participantsonourteamsarestudent-athletes. ltisalsoimperative
that intercollegiate athletics be conducted on a very high level
of integrity.
"Within thislramework, I believe that athletics have a real
role to play in the educalional experience. A sound, competilive program of athletics provides a rallying point for an
institution's alumni and can be of benefit to the other, more
fundamental, purposes of a u niversity."
He and his wile, Helen, have two children, Kenneth Cliff
and Debra Elaine Dahl; a granddaughter, Ashley Dahl, and a
grandson, Hanly P. Funderburk.

Eastern Kentueky University

The Campus Beautiful
T

he nickname, "The Campus Beautiful," aptly describes
the Eastern Kentucky University campus. It is t ruly a
beautiful atmosphere in which to live and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonweatth's sysl em of
regional universities, is the culmination of more than a
century ol higher education development on its 350-acre
main campus in Richmond. Today's modern Eastern otters

more than 160 degree programs in its nine academic
colleges and graduate school including education, allied
health and nursing, computer science, business, sciences,

law enforcement, recreation and environmental resources
that provide educational opportunities to meet society's

demands.
The pursuit of academic excellence has been pledged
as one of the foremost objectives of Or. Hanly Funderburk,
who has begun his seventh lull academic year as Eastern's
eighth president.

Lady Colonel Basketball

The University seeks to fulfill the "living•while-leaming"
concept by providing comfortable living conditions for al·
most 7,000 students in campus residence halls. Eastern
can accommodate more students on campus than any
other university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic institution, Eastern is also noted !or its program of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The accomplishments of the Colonel athletic teams are a source of great
pride for the student body and campus community.
Eastem is a hub for cultural enrichment opportunities as
nationally known lecturers, artists, and entertainers appear
on campus. A wide variety of studenl and 1aculty musical
groups also provide a l ine selection of entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the athletic arena
or campus life, Eastern continues its stride toward excellence.

Lady Colonels Ready To Open 'Total Package'
For a

few years now, Eastern Kentueky has taken its lu"1)S
in Ohio Valley Conlerence women's basketball action.

Some teams thought EKUon the schedule meant an automatic
w. Well, that way ol thinking has been changing aOO suddenly
the Lady Colonels aren't pushovers anymore. They are making
opponenls start lo take notice of them, whether they want lo or

aot.
And there is good reason for such an attitude. Larry Joe
Inman has slowly and precisely been building the EKU program
baek up from the doldrums of a 6-20 season in 1987-88. He
worked on the mental as well as the physical aspects of the
program and has turned in three years of 12-14, 12-14and 14·

13. In 1990-91, Inman took the Lady Colonels to their first OVC
tournament appearance in six years.
"We feel like we have reached a poinl in our program where
we can make a difference in the OVC race. We showed that last
year by finishing lhird," said Inman. "Now, I believe we have
what it lakes to be competitive with the best teams in lhe
conference-height, strength, speed and good shOoters. We
have the total package."
And the package begins in the backcourt with seniorshOoting stars Angie Cox and Cheryl Jones. Gone is AII-OVC
performer Kelly Cowan, but the "Backcourt Bonbers" will
provide abigscoringpunchfor EKU. Cox, named second-team
All-America by the American Women's SIX)rts Federation in
1991, led the team wilh an 18.6 points per game average
(second in the OVC ) and was the conference's best in threepoint shooting (65-147, .442). The 5-9 guard also set a new
ave and school record last year with 105 steals.

Jones, 5-5, is an excellent outside shOoterwith good court
awareness. She broke the schOol record tor most assists in a
season last year with 170.
Cox and Jones will be backed up by two freshmen phenoms,
5-7 Mais ha Thomas of Winchester anc:15-7 Samantha Young
of Pineville. Thomas is as quick as lightning and a w izard w ith
the ball, and Young is a sure-shot from most anywhere on the
oourt. Michelle King, 5-6, will walk-on , as will 5-6 Cynthia
Collins.
Inman will have a bl of talent along l he fronlline. He can
build around the return of honorable-mention AWSF All-America
and honorable mentionAII-OVC JareeGoodinalcenter. Goodin,
a 6-2 junior, w ill battle for playing time w ith 6-1 j.mior, Sue
Zylstra, sop homores 6-1 Shannah McIntosh and 6-4 Sheletha
McEaddy and redshirt 5-11 sophomore Rhonda Hardesty.
Pushing the returners for starting positions w ill be two junior
college transfers, Segena Mackeroy and Tiffany Mayfield.
Mackeroy, 6-3 and loaded with talent, is from Central Florida
Comrn.Jnity College, w hile Mayfield, 5-9 and quick, is from
Lincoln Junior College in Matteson, IL.
The Lady Colonels highlight their 1991-92 season with
tournament appearances in the Bowling Green Bal"K lnvital ional in Bowling Green, Kentucky and l he Dial Classic at
Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. They w ill visit
Southeastern Conference power Vanderbilt as we ll as Xav ier
and Marshall.
Eastern will battle the always -tough Tennessee Tech and
Middle Tennessee in the ave race. Joining the light this
season w ill be Southeast Missouri.

1umni Coliseum and Paul S. McBrayer Arena, which first
opened for basketball action in 1963, has been the home
court for Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball
since the 1976-77 season when the women moved from
Weaver Health Building.

Located on a southern s1opeofthe EKU campus, Alumni
Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully planned sports
complex. The Coliseum is a massive physical plant and
features a great triumph in architectural design with its modem
laminated cross-arched roof - the work:l's largest of ils kind
- spanning 309 !eel and providing an unobstructed view of
events held in the main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board
feet of lumber form the 170 beams, and the root, which arches
gracefully 81 feet above flOor level, is southern pine linished
in its natural beauty.
In addition to McBrayer Arena, which seats 6,500 for
basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the building
contains lour basketball courts in an auxiliary gymnasium on
the east end, eight classrooms, 20 offices, both indoor and
outdoor swimming pools, shower and locker rooms, a projection room, a training room, and weight room. A hydraulicoperated stage is located at the east end of the main arena
floor.
Since the women's basketball program began playing its
games in Alumni Coliseum, the Lady Colonels have co~iled
an overall home record of 99 wins and 80 losses.

women's baskelball program. The process has been slow,
but it finally looks like !here is light at the end of the lunnel.
Under lnman's direction, the Lady Colonels broke the
.500 barrier during lhe 1990-91 season with a 14-13 record
and their lirst appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference
Tournament In six years.
"It hasn't been easy, but the players and the coaching
stall have been committed to this program and determined

to bring Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball 10
prominence once again,· said Inman, one win shy ol his
200th collegiate coaching victory. ·we have some good
freshmen coming in and the junior college players on the
team have experience. Those things, coupled with the
returning players, should make for a good mixture."
Challenges are nothing new to Inman, the dean of Ohio
Valley Conference women's basketball coaches. He is beginning his fourth season at Eastern Kentucky and his 12th
overall in the OVC. He helped make Middle Tennessee
State University into a national contender in only a few short
years before taking over at EKU.
Success is all Inman has known in his basketball coaching career. He began his profession at the high school level
where he compiled a 126-24 record (.840) at Mount Juliet
High School in Nashville, Tennessee.
lnman·s coaching ability became readily apparent to
college officials and he quickly moved up to take the helm of
lhe Middle Tennessee State Lady Raiders. During his eight
years there, he produced a record of 161-73 (.688) and took

His 1982-83 squad finished with a 10-0 league record
which stood as the only unblemished mark in the OVC un1il
Tennessee Tech went 12-0 in 1989.
Coaching honors have come with regularity for Inman,
including the Ohio Valley Conference Coachol the Year for the
1990-91 season. It was the filth such oonlerence honor of his
career. The 1970 Austin Peay State University graduate was

All-America Candidate
"Angie Cox is a talented basketball player who can hurt you in

three different ways. She can
penetrate to the basket, hit the

3-pointer or she can dish off to
the open player. Angie raises
the level of play of those around
her and definitely has a chance
at All-America honors. "

Joe Ciampi
Auburn University
"I have had the fortune, or mis-

fortune, of playing against Angie
for the past three years. She is

one of the most complete guards
we have ever played against.
She has playmaking ability and

is a deadly 3-point shooter. She
stacks up favorably with the best
guards in this part of the country."

Bud Childers
University of Loulsvllle
"Angie Cox is one of the finest

outside shooters in women's
college basketball today. She
has put up great numbers despite being the center of many
defensive schemes.·

Paul Sanderford
Western Kentucky University

· vou are very aware of Angie's presence on the floor. She is not a big scorer, but her abilities
compliment the game well. She contributes to the team
through her team play. She does the stuff you don't see
in the boxscores, the intangibles. She is definitely an
impact player and should be considered for Kodak AllAmerica honors.~

·Angie is a tremendous athlete who works hard on her
game and takes herself to another level during competition . She has the qualities of an All-American and
definitely deserves the recognition .·
