Easte rn Kentucky University �Dr. Robert Baugh Dean College of Health, Physical Ed., Recreation & Athletics and Acting Director of Athletics Baugh serves as dean of Eastem's College Dofr. Robert Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, one of the university's nine academic colleges. He also assumed the role of Acting Director of Athletics in August when Donald Combs retired. Baugh, former professor and chair of the EKU Department of Health Education, assumed the duties of acting dean in January of 1987. He has been at Eastern since 1970. Prior to arriving at EKU, Baugh taught for four years at Austin Peay State University following a stint of high school teaching in University City, Missouri. Baugh holds the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Indiana University. Baugh and his wife, Carol, reside in Richmond. She is an associate professor in EKU's College of Allied Health and Nursing. N · C ·A· A® Dr. Martha Mullins Assistant Athletic Director r. Martha Mullins is in her 1€th year as Assistant D Athletic Director. She has been an administrator in women's athletics at Eastern for the past 20 years and served as the women's tennis coach until the 1983-85 season. A graduate of the University of Alabama, she went on to do post-graduate work at Florida State where she received Ph.D. and M.A. degrees. While at FSU, Mullins assisted with the women's track program. She went on to serve a six-year tenure in Florida's junior college system where she was active as a tennis and volleyball coach, and provided early leadership in establishing athletic participation for women students in the state's junior colleges. In 1984, she was selected for the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference's Honor for outstanding service to women's intercollegiate athletics in Kentucky. Mullins has been responsible for the acquisition of historical records of the EKU Archives pertaining to the years in which the KWIC and AIAW Southern Region II governed athletics in the state. She is currently assisting in a Kentucky High School Athletic Association project to gather historical data on modern-day girls' basketball in the state. Mullins has been active in Ohio Valley Conference activities and served on the OVC Hall of Fame Committee and the 40th Anniversary Committee. She is past chair of the steering committee of the Kentucky Sports Equity Project, a state and federally funded effort to increase opportunities for minorities and women in sports leadership positions. Mullins also served on the board of directors of the Council of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. In addition she is a member of the NCAA Track and Field Committee. WOMEN'S ATHLETICS Lady Colonel Basketball 3 �he third year will be the charm, or so hopes Eastern T Kentucky University Lady Colonels basketball coach Larry Inman who has seen his first two squads finish with back-toback 12-14 records. . Inman began a rebuilding program last year, adding nine fresh faces to the roster. The result was a renewed attitude and a successful start as the Lady Colonels won the Tulane Invitational Tournament and then captured their first three Ohio Valley Conference contests to take an early lead in the OVC race. However, inexperience and a lack of depth in the post area proved fatal as EKU faltered down the stretch to finish in a fourth place tie in the final OVC standings. The Lady Colonels were among the nation's top three-point shooting teams last year and finished 10th in the NCAA final statistics with 4.9 makes per game. The leader of "lnman's Infantry," senior forward Kelly Cowan returns along with three other regulars-guards Angie Cox and Cheryl Jones and center Jaree Goodin. Cowan, a 5-11 sharpshooter from Somerset, KY, moved into sixth place on the all-time Lady Colonel scoring list last year with 1 ,064 points and has an excellent chance to move up to No. 3 before closing out her career. She led EKU in scoring average last year with 15.8 points per game to earn first-team AII-OVC honors. Inman calls her one of the best pure shooters he has ever coached. Add Cox, a junior from Somerset, KY., and Jones, a junior from Ludlow, KY, along with 5-11 forward Rhonda Hardesty, a sophomore from Coschocton, OH, and you have a dangerous outside shooting foursome. Back to handle the inside game will be OVC All-freshman team selection Jaree Goodin, a 6-2 sophomore from Corbin, KY, who averaged 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds last year to rank among the conference leaders in both categories. Goodin also broke the school single-game scoring record with a 38point performance against Marshall. Another returnee who saw spot starting duty last year is 6-1 sophomore post player Sue Zylstra from Miami, FL.. Help on the inside is what Inman and his staff saw as immediate needs this year and that is what they got in two recruits who will be eligible as freshmen. The two are Shannah McIntosh, a 6-2 second-team Ohio All-Stater from Middletown, OH, and Sheletha McEaddy, a 6-4 center from Ft. RIiey, KS, who becomes the tallest player in Lady Colonel history. EKU also landed Chris Burch, another 6-4 post player and high school first-team All-Stater from Fredericktown, OH, but she will not be eligible to play as a freshman after failing to meet Proposition 48 requirements. "I feel good about the foundation we are laying here at Eastern," said Inman. McBrayer Arena, which first opened for basketball action in 1963, has been the home arena for Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball since the 1976-77 season when the women moved from Weaver Health Building. Located on a southern slope of the EKU campus, Alumni Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully planned sports complex. The Coliseum is a massive physical plant and features agreattriumph in architectural design with its modern laminated cross-arched roof - the world's largest of its kind - spanning 309 feet and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board feet of lumber form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches gracefully 81 feet above floor level, is southern pine finished in its natural beauty. In addition to McBrayer Arena, which seats 6,500 for basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the building contains four basketball courts in an auxiliary gymnasium on the east end; eight classrooms; twenty offices; both indoor and outdoor swimming pools; shower and locker rooms, a projection room, a training room, and weight room. A hydraulic-operated stage is located at the east end of the main arena floor. Since the women's basketball program began playing its games in Alumni Coliseum, the Lady Colonels have compiled an overall home record of 90 wins and 78 losses. Inman begins his third season at EKU and his 11th overall in the OVC. After eight fabulous years at Middle Tennessee where he directed that school to five conference regular season titles and four OVC tournament crowns, Inman took the challenge of leading the EKU program to similar success. Although the success has not come instantly, the Lady Colonels have shown signs of brilliance in lnman's first two seasons. Back-to-back 12-14 seasons have been bittersweet for Inman and his staff. Inconsistency and not having a tradition of winning has hampered both of Inman's two EKU squads, but the pieces are coming together for the Lady Colonels to finally get overt he hump of mediocrity and into the upper echelon of the OVC on a regular basis. Success is all Larry Inman has known in his career that also includes five years on the high school level where he compiled a 126-24 record (.840) at Mt. Juliet High School in Nashville, TN. At MTSU, his Lady Raider teams dominated the OVC from 1978-86. His record there was 161-73 (.688) and included four trips to the NCAA regional tournament where Middle was 2-4 against some of the top schools in the nation. His 1982-83 squad finished with a 10-0 league record which stood as the only unblemished mark in the OVC until Tennessee Tech went 12-0 last season. Coaching honors have come with regularity for Inman. He was voted the OVC Coach of the Year four times while at 6 Middle and was nominated for WBCA District 9 Coach of the Year in 1990. While at Mt. Juliet H.S., Inman was named Nashville Interscholastic League Coach of the Year four times as he directed his teams to five district crowns, four regional championships, three NIL titles, and the 1977 Tennessee Class AAA state championship. Grimes, 35, is a native Ohioan and played collegiately for Ohio University where she was a four-year starter and her team's leading scorer as a junior and senior. After receiving a B.S. degree from OU, Grimes began her coaching and teaching career at Ridgewood High School where she guided that team to a three-year record of 64-7, including an Ohio Class AA state runner-up finish in 1979-80. In 1984 she began a four-year tenure at Tri-Valley High school, and compiled a record of 60-33, including a Class MA runner-up finish in 1984-85. Her duties as assistant coach will cover the areas of recruiting, on-floor coaching, academic monitor, counseling and public relations. She earned a Master's degree in physical education in 1988 from Ohio University. She has a daughter, Brandy, age 4. e~z,~ Assistant Coach hancellor Dugan, a standout performer for the Lady CColonels from 1978-82, begins year two at her alma mater following six years of coaching on the high school and collegiate levels. Dugan spent three years as an assistant at Morehead State and prior to that she was on the staff as an assistant at Alabama. Dugan graduated in 1982 from EKU with a degree in physical education and earned her master's degree in 1989 from Morehead State. She came to Eastern form Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville where she was an outstanding athlete. In addition to her basketball ability, Dugan was also one of the state's outstanding female swimmers. As a member of the EKU basketball team, Dugan was a three-year starter and finished her junior and senior years as the team's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer. She was the co-holder of EKU's single game rebound record of 20 until it was broken in 1988. 8 After graduating from EKU, Dugan took the head coaching job at George West High School in George West, TX where she guided that team to a three-year record of 56-30. Dugan·s area of responsibility at EKU will be in recruiting, public relations, travel arrangements, and on-floor coaching. Eastern Kentucky University �'!)el,u,, ' ! ) ~ 'P4Ht-~ Volunteer Assistant Manager ebra Dunbar.a 1987graduateofthe University of San Francisco, joins the EKU staff as a volunteer assistant coach this season. Dunbar had a fine collegiate playing career for USF. She was named to the West Coast Athletic Conference's all-conference team her senior season. She was also named a WCAC Scholar/Athlete that same season. In her junior season, she was named Outstanding Student/Athlete at USF. Dunbar holds USF records for most career assists and for most assists in one season. Dunbar also had a very impressive high school career at Fallbrook Union High School in San Diego. She was the San Diego County CIF Girl's Basketball Player of the Year her senior season. She was also conference MVP of the Palomar League that same season. She was named to the first team AII-CIF her junior season after leading her team to a 25-0 record. Dunbar chose EKU over all of the other colleges in Kentucky to pursue her coaching career. D am Monroe, a freshman from Louisville, begins herfirstyear as a manager for the Lady Colonels. She attended Southern High School where she worked with the boys basketball team her sophomore year and worked for the girls basketball team her junior and senior years. Monroe enjoys singing, swimming, and tennis as hobbies. She would like to be a D.J. after she finishes college. She is the daughter of Edna and Jimmie Monroe. P ~~. '!)~p~ Graduate Assistant Manager ally Boyd, a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University, joins the EKU staff as a graduate assistant coach this season. After completing her playing career at NMSU, Boyd stayed on to assume assistant coaching duties while she obtained an extra teaching certificate in Health. She received her degree in Physical Education/Health K-12. The Argenta, IL native played her high school career at ArgentaOreana High School. She is pursuing a master's degree in physical education. K Lady Colonel Basketball onna Phelps, an occupational therapy major from Bardstown, begins her first season as a manager for the Lady Colonels. Phelps attended Nelson County High School where she was a basketball manager for three years. She likes to spend her spare time reading and getting together with friends. In three years on the college level Cowan has established herseH as one of the best pursue shooters in the Ohio Valley Conference and perhaps in all of women's basketball. University of Georgia Lady Bulldog coach Andy Landers will attest to that statement after watching Cowan blitz his team with a 32-point performance on 11 of 23 shooting, including six from three-point land. EKU head coach Larry Inman calls her the best outside shooter he has ever coached. She is expected to close out a brilliant career in grand fashion in 1990-91 after becoming only the sixth player in Lady Colonel history to surpass the 1,000-point career scoring mark as a junior. Cowan, who will be the team's only senior, enters the season with 1,064 points and can realistically move up to third place on the EKU all-time list before she closes out the year. The personable, first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection in 1990, has been a work horse during her career playing in all 78 games and starting in 73 of those contests. She has maintained double figure scoring averages in each of her three seasons, a rare feat in itself, and has improved her average with each year from 10.7 as a freshman, when she earned OVC AllFreshman honors, to 14.5 as a sophomore and a team-leading 15.8 last year. In addition to her scoring abilities. Cowan has made marked improvement in her defensive and rebounding skills. She had a solid sophomore year after earning a spot on the OVC All-Freshmen team in 1988-89. She has the ball-handling ability to man the point guard position and the shooting ability to play the second guard spot. Coach Inman will use her both ways this year. She has shown moments of brilliance as both a passer and shooter, and can go to boards when needed. Consistency in her offensive game is the area she needs to concentrate on in order to fully reach her potential. As a freshman, Cox handed out 113 assists, despite missing three games because of injury, and came up short of the EKU single season mark of 125. She had two single games of 13 assists during her frosh year which tied the EKU record at the time, but has since been broken by Tracey Kindred's 17 last season. She is also a clever defensive player with a knack of coming up with timely steals. Cox finished both seasons second on the team in steals. She has gained strength since coming to EKU and that has enabled her to play the more physical collegiate game. Like teammate Kelly Cowan, Cox hails from Pulaski County High School where she earned All-State honors and was selected to play for the Kentucky All-Stars. She finished second the team in scoring average and sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 15.3 average. The former Kentucky All-Stater also ranked sixth in rebounding with 8. 7 boards per game which boosted her to a spot on the OVC's All-Freshman team. With her soft shooting touch, Goodin improved her inside scoring game as she adjusted to the more physical college game. She finished the year as the OVC's seventh most accurate shooter with a .474 percentage from the field. Goodin came to EKU with expectations to be a dominating force before her career is over. She didn't disappoint Lady Colonel coaches and fans with her freshman performance. If one area of her game could be improved it would be in the personal foul department where she needs to learn how to stay out of early foul trouble. She was whistled out of 11 games and that cut her playing time to an average of 26 minutes per game. Inman would like to have her on the floor for more minutes this year. She had an outstanding high school career at Corbin under coach Gerald Foley as she scored 1,874 points and grabbed 1,086 rebounds to earn first-team All-State honors. She was second on the team in assists with 84 and had a knack of getting the ball to an open player, but needs to cut down on a team high 76 turnovers to become a top-flight point guard. Jones possesses long-range on the jumper and gives the Lady Colonels a third bonafide threat at the three-point shot. She connected to 35 percent of her treys as a sophomore and has continued to improve her shooting form that could lead to an even better accuracy mark this season. A very intelligent player, Jones will join with Cox to g ive the Lady Colonels a potent guard attack and valuable leadership. She is a product of Notre Dame Academy where she was an All-9th Region first-team pick and the Northern Kentucky Athlete of the Year. Her freshman year at Eastern proved to be a big adjustment from the less physical high school game to the more demanding collegiate style of play. She has worked hard to gain strength that will better enable her to play the rougher inside game. Zylstra does have tremendous speed and jumping ability which enables her to overcome her lack of bulk and strength on the inside. The Austin, Indiana native poured in 1,920 points during an outstanding career. The 5-6 sharpshooter will long be remembered for her free throw accuracy as well as her scoring ability. In two of her four seasons, Goodin led the nalion·s NCAA Division 1 schools in free lhrow percentage. As a freshman, she connected on .897 percent of her charity tosses and in her junior year she converted 91 percent. While Goodin, who made her marl< in scoring history went into coaching on !he high school level, two other former Lady Colonels continued their basketball careers on the professional level. Angela "Chooolate" Fletcher, EKU's leading scorer in 1985-86 with an 18.0 average, signed lo play for the Knoxville Tiger Cats ol the National Women's Basketball Association. Extensive intramural, free play and club sports programs are sponsored providing varied participation opportunities for all. These programs are an integral part of the total program and development of Eastern students. They offer experiences which contribute immeasurably to the health, vitality and p(eparation ol young people as citizens and !or their leadership contributions to the youth in the nation's schOols and elsewhere. The College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics oilers a variety of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The coaches of athletics are among the 46 full-time faculty members representing more than a score of the finest colleges and universities in the nation, required to produce academic, intrarrural and varsity athletic programs. The extensive indoor and outdoor facilities are used interchangeably for instruction and athletics as is the faculty. The College, which is organized under a single administrative unit, includes three academic departments under which there are six undergraduate and graduate degree programs and intercollegiate athletics. This type organization contributes significantly to successful coordination of the program faculty and facilities for maximum contribution to the overall mission of the University. lady Colonel Basketball The College is headed by Dr. Robert Baugh, its three academic departments are: School and Public Health, chaired by Dr. Don Calitri; Recreation and Park Administration, chaired by Dr. Larry Belknap; Physical Education, chaired by Dr. Lonnie Davis. The College's p<ogram in intercollegiate athletics is administered by the athletic director and the assistant director, Dr. Martha Mullins. A balanced athletic program-intramural sports clubs and intercollegiate-is provided by the College. EKU, a member of the NCAA ar.d Ohio Valley Conference, fields women's athletic teams in baSketball, volleyball, field hockey, tennis, cross country, and track and field (indoor and outdoor). Outstanding facilities are required to support an operation with the scope of Eastem's College of H.P.E.R.A. The College's programs are housed in five major campus structures-The Robert B. Begley Building where it is headquartered, the Alurmi Coliseum, the Weaver Health Building, the Presnell Building and the Greg Adams Building . Numerous tennis courts, recreation areas, Gertrude Hood Fiek:I, Turkey Hughes Baseball Field, and the Tom C. Samuels nine-lane track and tartan infield are among the other facilities of the College. An 18-hole goll course and an outdoor educationrecreation demonstration area are located at Arlington. He served as sports editor of the school newspaper, The Eastern Progress, for three years while a student of the University. The 41-year-old Richmond native Is a melTCler of the College Sports Information Directors ol America (COSIDA), the United States Basketball Writers Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He received national recognition for the production of EKU's lhree seasonal media guides for 1978-79 and 1979-80. The winter sports guide was voted Best in the Nation - Division A for those two years. Park received his masters degree from EKU in 1979.
