The Campus Beautiful
he nickname, "The Campus Beautiful " aptly describes the Eastern Kentucky University campus. It
is truly a beautiful atmosphere in which to live and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's sytem of
regional universities, is the culmination of more than a
century of higher education development on its 350-acre
main campus in Richmond. Today's modern Eastern
offers more than 160 degree programs in its nine
academic colleges and graduate school includ ing
education, allied health, and nursing, computer science,
business, sciences, law enforcement, recreation, and
environmental resources that provide educational
oppuntunities to meet society's demands.
The pursuit of academic excel lence has been
pledged as one of the foremost objectives of Dr. Hanly
Funderburk, who has begun his third full academic year
as Eastern's eighth president.
The University's seeks to fulfill the "living-while-

T

learning " concept by providing comfortable living
conditions for almost 7,000 students in campus residence
halls. Eastern can accomodate more students on campus
than any other university in the state.
In addition to being a high ly respected academic
institut ion , Eastern is also noted for its program of
intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The
accomplishments of the Colonel athletic teams is a
source of great pride for the student body and campus
community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment
opportunities as nationally known lecturers, artists , and
entertainers appear on campus. A wide variety of student
and faculty musical groups also provide a fine selection
of entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the athletic
arena, or campus life, Eastern cont inues its stride toward
excellence.

Dr. Hanly Funderburk
EKU's 8th
President

r. Hanly Funderburk has begun his fourth full
academic year as eighth president of Eastern
Kentucky University. He was elected by the EKU Board of
Regents in November, 1984 to succeed Dr. J.C. Powell as
pres ident and assumed office Jan. 1, 1985.
Throughout his more than 30 years of service to
ed ucation, Dr. Funderburk , 56, has held to his commitment to excellence in the classroom, in the research
laboratory, and as a university administrator.
Dr. Funderburk's background in many ways parallels
th at of many others of Eastern Kentucky University's
founders - modest beginnings as a farm boy, earning his
ed ucat ion, military service, a welcomer of responsibility,
enthus iastic, impatient of mediocrity.
A native of Carrollton, Alabama, President Funderb urk earned the bachelor of science degree in
ag ric ultural science from Auburn University, working on
a fam ily farm each summer between terms. Following
th ree years in the U.S. Army, he returned to Auburn to

D

earn a master of science degree in botany. Later, he
completed study fo r the doctorate of philosophy degree
in plant physiology from Lou isiana State University.
Dr. Funderburk held prog ressively responsible
positions in teaching , research and adm in istration-during
his years at Auburn University where he served w ith
distinction as president from 1980 to 1983. Prio r to his
post at Auburn, Dr. Funderburk served as chancellor of
Auburn University at Montgomery , a reg ional university
that serves south central Alabama. The 500-acre campus
and its twenty million dolla r physical plant was developed
during his tenure there and today stands as a testim on ial
to his administrative and leade rsh ip ability.
On his philosophy concerning the role of intercollegiate athletics, Dr. Funderburk says, " I believe t hat a
reasonable program of intercolleg iate athletics, operated
in an ethical, rational manner is an important part of an
institution of higher education. We must not lose sight of
the fact that academics are our primary purpose, and we
must remember that participants on our teams are
student-athletes. It is also imperative that intercollegiate
athletics be conducted on a very high level of integrity .
"Within this framework, I believe that athletics have a
real role to play in the educational experience. A sound,
competitive program of athletics provides a rall ying point
for an institution 's alumni and can be of benefit to the
other, more fundam ental , purposes of a university."
He and his wife, Hele n, have two children , Kenneth
Cliff, and Debra Ela ine Dahl, and a granddaugher, Ashley
Dahl, age six.

A act ion in 1963, h as been the hom e arena for Eastern
Kentucky University women's basketbal l since the 197677 season when the women moved from Weaver Health
B uilding.
Located on a southern slope of the EKU campus,
A lumni Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully
planned sports complex. The Coliseum is a massive
physical plant and features a great t riumph in architectural design witt1 its modern laminated cross-arched
ro of - the world's largest of its kind - spanning 309 feet
and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the
main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board feet of lumber
form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches gracefully 81 feet above floor level , is southern pine finished in
its natural beauty.
In addition to the main auditorium , which seats 6,500
fo r basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the
building contains four basketball courts in an auxi liary
gymnasium on the east end ; eight c lassrooms; twenty
o ffices; both indoor and outdoor swimming pools;
shower and locker rooms, a projection room, a training
roo m, and weight room . A hydraulic-operated stage is
located at the east end of the main arena floor.
Since the women's basketball program began playing
it s games in Alumni Coliseum, the Colonels have
compiled an overal l home record of 78 wins and 69
losses.

A Proven Winner Takes The Helm

Larry Joe Inman
Head Coach

\ A Jhen Larry Inman came on board last April as the new

VV head coach of the Lady Colonel basketball program,

folks around the Ohio Valley Conference sat up and took
notice for they know that given time the former Middle
Tennessee mentor will build Eastern into a conference contender on a yearly basis.
Inman was at MTSU for eight years from 1978-86 and
compiled a 161-73 record. His Lady Raider teams were
considered the class of the conference, both on and off the
playing floor. The 40-year-old Tennessee native knows that
turning the EKU program into a consistent winner will not be
easy, but as Inman said when he was hired for the job, "I think
we're on the verge of good things at Eastern. The administration gives a lot of support to the program, even more than we
had at Middle Tennessee. There are good players on hand,
and I know there's groundwork to do, but we're ready to meet
the challenge and establish a major Division I program."
At Middle, Inman directed his teams to five OVC
regular season titles, two second place finishes and one third
place season. His MTSU teams also won four OVC tournament titles in a row (1983-86), and advanced to the NCAA
regional tournament each of those years where the Lady
Raiders were 2-4 in post-season play against some of the top
schools in the nation.
His .688 winning percentage at Middle Tennessee,
coupled with a five-year high school head coaching record of
126-24 (.840) at Mt. Juliet (TN) High School, gives him an
overall career record of 287-97 (.747). He has never had a
losing season at any level of coaching. In his eight years at
MTSU, his teams won 20 or more games five times. In 198283 he directed the Lady Raiders to a 10-0 OVC record, the

12

only time since the league went to its double round-robin
format of scheduling that a team went unbeaten in conference play. As a result of his teams' successes, Inman was
voted the OVC Coach of the Year four times.
He was also named Nashville Interscholastic League
Coach of the Year four times while at Mt. Juliet. His teams
there won five district crowns, four regional championships,
three NIL titles, and captured the 1977 Tennessee Class AM
state championship.
While success on the court is important to Inman, he is
also concerned about the players' future success in life. "I
hope to teach our players the skills and work habits that will
not only make them better basketball players, but as they

A Pre-Season Look At The Lady Colonels
he arrival of Larry Inman as the new head coach and the return
of two starters from last year's team are reasons enough for
renewed excitement for Eastern Kentucky University Lady Colonel
basketball in 1988-89.
Inman finds himself in a major rebuilding year as he takes over
a program that suffered through a disappointing and sometimes
turbulent season in 1987-88. But the personable new head coach
appears to be the person for the task as he return to coaching
following two years in private business. Inman is certainly no
newcomer to Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball followers. In eight years as coach at Middle Tennessee, he led the Lady
Raiders to a 161 -73 record and five OVC regular season titles, two
second place finishes, four OVC tournament crowns, and four
NCAA reg ional tournament appearances where MTSU was 2-4 in
post-season play.
Gone from last year's squad are the top two scorers and rebounders. One of those players was two-time All OVC performer
Carla Coffey who moved up the career scoring ladder to take fourth
place with 1,363. The 6-0 forward averaged 17.8 points and 8.8
rebounds in her final season. The other key loss is 6-1 center Cathy
Snipes who led Eastern in scoring and rebounding with 19.5 and 9.9
averages, respectively. She fell victim to academic problems. Also
missing is three-year starter Sondra Miller who completed her
eligibility.
That leaves returning starters Tina Reece, a 5-7 junior guard,
and 5-10 sophomore forward Kelly Cowan as the only players back
with any considerable amount of game experience. Reece, who
bounced back from a serious kn ee injury suffered the previous
season, averaged 11 .9 points and 4.2 assists from her point guard

T

spot. She also led the Lady Colonels in three-point field goal
shooting with 42 FGs in 109 attempts. Cowan stepped in as a
freshman to average in double figures with 10.7 ppg, and she earned
OVC All-Freshmen honors as a result.
The other returnees from a year ago with the exception of earlyseason starter Aquanta Milligan, a 5-1 O forward, saw very little
playing time. These players include Hallie Burger, a 6-3 center;
Greta Cahoe, a 5-10 forward ; and Stephanie Jones, a 5-3 point
guard.
So, it would appear that Inman will have to rely heavily on a crop
of eight newcomers that include two scholarship freshmen and four
transfers.
The two freshmen Angies-Angie Cox, a 5-9 point guard, and
Angie Bryant, a 5-10 guard-are expected to make an immediate
contribution. Cox was an All-State performer at Pulaski County High
School, the same school that produced Cowan. Bryant was a highlytouted player at nearby Garrard County High School.
Not one of the transfers have played competitively for at least
two years. One of those, 6-3 senior Sherrie Clark, has not played
basketball since transferring from Wake Forest following her freshman year. She has been at EKU as a member of the women's track
team for the last two years. The other three players were at Eastern
last year after transferring from junior colleges, but sat out the
season and did not practice. The trio includes 5-8 forwards LaTonya
Fleming and Kim Hatley, and 5-10 center Cheryl Palmer. Fleming,
a junior college All-American in 1986-87 at Crowder J.C., is expected to be a "sudden impact" player in her only season of eligibility.
She possesses all the offensive tools to become one of, if not the
best, scoring threats in EKU wom en's basketball history.

ina Reece rebounded from a serious knee injury two years ago to
have a good 1987-88 season in which she started in all 26 games
and finished the year as the Lady Colonels' third-leading scorer. The
only returning backcourt player, much of the leadership responsibility
will fall on Reece, a former Indiana All-State performer at state
champion Austin High School. The knee injury and subsequent redshirt season in 1986-87 appeared to slow Reece's movement on the
floor somewhat last year, but her shooting eye remained unaffected
by the layoff and rehabilitation period . The three-point field goal rule
is just to order for Reece. In her sophomore season Tina connected
on 42 of 109 from long range to rank among the OVC leaders in threepointers made per game. Her 42 made 3pt. FG's represented nearly
half of EKU's team total. Operating from the point guard position,
Reece possesses the ability to get her team into a running offense or
slow the pace for a hattcourt game. She has uncanny passing talent,
but needs to become a bit more disciplined in that area in order to curb
unnecessary turnovers. Career Bests ...FGs Made, 10, vs. Middle

was the fourth-leading scorer on the team with an average of 10.7.
Cowan possesses a deadly outside jumper and is a major threat from

players because of her strong work habits. Her performance as a
freshman earned Cowan selection to the OVC's All-Frosh team and
also resulted in her being named as the recipient of the 1988 Lady

uanta Milligan will be a key role player and will be looked to as
the only returning senior to provide some valuable leadership
both on and off the playing floor. She arrived at EKU last year out of
Shelby State Junior College as a highly touted rebounder and
defensive player. Milligan exhibited those strengths early last season,
but because of her offensive struggles she saw less playing time the
second half of the year. To illustrate the point, she was averaging 5.5
rebounds through the pre-holiday portion of the schedule, but she was
only scoring at a 5.0 average while shooting poorly from the floor. It
was her shooting woes as much as anything that cut into her playing
time as the season progressed. Coach Inman is looking for Milligan
to contribute defensively, but she needs to solidify her offensive game
inorderto be a complete player. As aJUCO sophomore she averaged
12 points and eight boards per game to help lead Shelby State to a 275 record and a berth in the NJCAA regional tournament. Career

in Lady Colonel history, but she will have to share that recognition this

offensive moves in the low post area. She arrived at EKU two years
ago as a high jumper in track, but was persuaded at mid-season to join
the basketball program and she has stuck with the team. When she
first joined the team, Burger was lacking in several skill areas and in
upper body strength, but through her dedication she has matured as

she can play inside and hold her own against some of the stronger

Fr., Point-Guard ~
Ht. : 5-9, Wt. : 130

Hometown: Ferguson, KY

Major: Undeclared

A

ngie Cox, an All-State guard and member of the 1988 Kentucky All-Star squad,
is expected to give immediate help to Eastern's program. A smooth ball handler
with good speed, Cox joins her former Pulaski County teammate, Kelly Cowan, at
EKU . When Cox was a junior and Cowan a senior, they led Pulaski to a 24-7 reco rd
and to the 12th Region runner-up spot. She played for Larry Hurt in high school..

LaTonya Fleming
Sr., Forward
Ht.: 5-8, Wt. : 135

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Major: Physical Education

L

a Tonya Fleming, a transfer two years ago from Crowder Junior
College in Missouri, will finally get her chance to play after sitting out
last season. Offensively, she can do it all and Inman expects her to be an
instance success. Like many JUCO players and incoming freshman, she
needs to improve her defensive skills for the Division 1 level.

L

ike teammate Latonya Fleming, Kim Hatley's long-awaited chance to play for
the Lady Colonels has arrived. She transferred to EKU from Crowder J.C. last
year along with Fleming, but sat out the 1987-88 season. She is a solid defensive
player, but needs to increase her outside shooting range. Eastern's coaches expect
Hatley to help immediately.

Cheryl Palmer
Sr., Center
Ht.: 5-10, Wt.: 200

Hometown: Memphis, TN

Major: Corrections

C

heryl Palmer is a transfer from LeMoyne College and will be a key to
EKU's success this year. She had a brilliant high school career and
played for the Tennessee All-Stars West squad in 1984 before going on to
Mississippi Valley Junior College for two years where she averaged 1O
points and six rebounds before going on to LeMoyne. She needs to improve
quickness and post defense.

~~~ard-Guard
Ht.: 5-10, Wt.: 140
Hometown: Danville, KY
Major: Undeclared
A
ngie Bryant joins the Lady Colonel program following a record-setting high
school career at Garrard County H.S. She set school records for most points
scored in a season and career and earned All-12th Region and AII-CKC honors for
three years. Coach Inman says Angie needs to get quicker and learn to shoot on the
move. She was coached in high school by Kenny Hurt.
Ht.: 6-3, Wt.: 170
Hometown: Jacksonville, NC
Major: Fashion Merchandising
S
herrie Clark is a very welcome addition to the Lady Colonel's program.
At 6-3, she gives EKU much-needed size at the post position and she
will be counted on to provide defensive help inside, a major problem for the
past three years. A transfer from Wake Forest two years ago, Clark has been
a sprinter for EKU's track team and has not competed in basketball during
this time. She came out of high school ranked as one of North Carolina's top
1O H.S. players and was highly recruited. An injury led to her decision to
leave Wake Forest.
Major: Business Finance
A nne Meador, a walk-on, has impressed the coaching staff with her hard work.
,I-IShe played high school basketball at Meade County and helped lead that school
to the semi-finals of both the 1985 and 1986 Kentucky State High School Tournament. She needs to improve the range on her outside jumper.
The Ohio Valley Conference
T
he idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference was
originated in 1941 , but cou ld not be implemented
until after World War II. In 1948 five schools - Western
Kentuck y, Eastern Kentucky, Murray, Morehead, and
Louisvi ll e - withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference and were joined by Evansvi lle in
forming the orig in al membership of the OVC. They were
joined shortly thereafter by Te nnessee T ech and
Marshall .
The membe rshi p has changed somewhat over the
years. Middle T ennessee joi ned the leagu e in 1952, East
T ennessee in 1957 , and Au stin Peay in 1962. They
replaced Louisville, which became independent in 1949,
and Marshall and Evansvill e, which departed in 1952. East
Tennessee left in 1978 and was replaced by Akron, which
began competit ion in 1980, and Youngstown joined th e
league race in 1981 . Western Kentucky with d rew its
membership at th e conc lusion of the 1981-82 ath letic
year. Both Akron and Youngstown State have since departed the league.
In 1955 the National Collegiate Athletic Association
formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball
conference, giving the league's c hampion an automatic
bid to the post-season NCAA Tournament. At the tim e,
the OVC was on ly the second six-team co nfe re,nce to
obtain major status from the NCAA . Pri or to 1955 ,
Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Murray w ere
the o nly OVC members ranked as major basketball
powers.
In 1978, the OVC began football competition in the
NCAA Di vision I-AA which offers a post-season
c hampionship playoff syste m . Easte rn K entucky
captured th e 1979 and 1982 national c hampionshi p titles
and has represented the OVC in two other championsh ip
games in 1980 and 1981, finishing in th e runnersup slot
those years.
The administration of the conference is now supervi sed by James Delany, who formerly se rved on the staff
of the NCAA .
Delany is th e OVC's fo urth co mmiss ioner, following
Art Guepe ( 1963-75). Paul Dietzel ( 1975-76). and Bob
Vanatta (1976-79).
