he nickname, 'The Campus Beautiful" aptly describes the Eastern Kentucky University campus. It
is truly a beautiful atmosphere in which to live and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's sytem of
regional universities, is the culmination of more than a
century of higher education development on its 350-acre
main campus in Richmond. Today's modern Eastern
offers more than 160 degree programs in its nine
academic colleges and graduate school including
education, allied health, and nursing, computer science,
business, sciences, law enforcement, recreation, and
environmental resources that provide educational
oppuntunities to meet society's demands.
The pursuit of academic excellence has been
pledged as one of the foremost objectives of Dr. Hanly
Funderburk, who has begun his third full academic year
as Eastern's eighth president.
The University's seeks to fulfill the "living-while-

learning" concept by providing comfortable living
conditions for almost 7,000 students in campus residence
halls. Eastern can accomodate more students on campus
than any other university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic
institution, Eastern is also noted for its program of
intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The
accomplishments of the Colonel athletic teams is a
source of great pride for the student body and campus
community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment
opportunities as nationally known lecturers, artists, and
entertainers appear on campus. A wide variety of student
and faculty musical groups also provide a fine selection
of entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the athletic
arena, or campus life, Eastern continues its stride toward
excellence .

Dr. Hanly Funderburk
EKU's 8th
President

r. Hanly Funderburk has
D academic
year as eighth

begun his third full
president of Eastern
Kentucky University. He was elected by the EKU Board of
Regents in November, 1984 to succeed Dr. J.C. Powell as
president and assumed office Jan. 1, 1985.
Throughout his more than 30 years of service to
ed ucation, Dr. Funderburk, 55, has held to his commitme nt to excellence in the classroom, in the research
laboratory, and as a university administrator.
Dr. Funderburk's background in many ways parallels
that of many others of Eastern Kentucky University's
fo unders - modest beginnings as a farmboy, earning his
education, military service, a welcomer of responsibility,
enthusiastic, impatient of mediocrity.
A native of Carrollton, Alabama, President Funderburk earned the bachelor of science degree in
agricultural science from Auburn University, working on
a family farm each summer between terms. Following
th ree years in the U.S. Army, he returned to Auburn to

Lady Colonel Basketball

earn a master of science degree in botany. Later, he
completed study for the doctorate of philosophy degree
in plant physiology from Louisiana State University.
Dr. Funderburk held progressively responsible
positions in teaching, research and administration during
his years at Auburn University where he served with
distinction as president from 1980 to 1983. Prior to his
post at Auburn, Dr. Funderburk served as chancellor of
Auburn University at Montgomery, a regional university
that serves south central Alabama. The 500-acre campus
and its twenty million dollar physical plant was developed
during his tenure there and today stands as a testimonial
to his administrative and leadership ability.
On his philosophy concerning the role of intercollegiate athletics, Dr. Funderburk says, "I believe that a
reasonable program of intercollegiate athletics, operated
in an ethical, rational manner is an important part of an
institution of higher education. We must not lose sight of
the fact that academics are our primary purpose, and we
must remember that participants on our teams are
student-athletes. It is also imperative that intercollegiate
athletics be conducted on a very high level of integrity.
"Within this framework, I believe that athletics have a
real role to play in the educational experience. A sound,
competitive program of athletics provides a rallying point
for an institution's alumni and can be of benefit to the
other, more fundamental, purposes of a university."
He and his wife, Helen, have two children, Kenneth
Cliff, and Debra Elaine Dahl, and a granddaugher, Ashley
Dahl, age five.

" My main responsibi lity is to provide our student

progress toward the attainment of a degree," said
Hopkins. " In so doing, I am the official advisor of a ll

" My job is a very challangi ng and rewarding one,"

he College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics sponsers eig_!lt intercollegiate
sports for men, and seven intercollegiate sports for
women. Extensive intramural, free play and club sports
programs are sponsored providing varied participation
opportunities for all.
These programs are an integral part of the total
program and development of Eastern students. They

The College is headed by Dr. Robert Baugh. Its three
academic departments are: School and Public Health,
chaired by Dr. Don Calitri; Recreation and Park
Administration, chaired by Dr. James McChesney; and
Physical Education, chaired by Dr. Peggy Stanaland . The
College's program in intercollegiate athletics is
administered by the athletic director Donald G. Combs
and the assistant director, Dr. Martha Mullins.
A balanced athletic program - intramural sports

the Weaver Health Building, the Presnell Building and the
Greg Adams Building. Numerous tennis courts,
recreation areas, Gertrude Hood Field, Turkey Hughes
Baseball Field, and the Tom C. Samuels nine-lane track
with tartan infield are among the other facilities of the
College. An 18- hole golf course and an outdoor
education-recreation demonstration area are located at
Arlington. There are four equipped training rooms
attached to the intercollegiate locker rooms in four
buildings.
The seven-story Begley Building is designed to serve
nearly 2,000 students hourly in classes and also provides
seating for more than 20,000 football spectators.
Included in the structure are three gymnasiums, 12
handball courts, 36 classrooms, 60 offices and the
dressing facilities for physical education and football. A
training area includes two exercise and weight-lifting

Head Coach

W

hen Eastern Kentucky University's search
committee went looking for a proven coach that has
built winning programs. They found just the person in
George N. Cox, a Texas native, who was unbelievably
successful in his nine-year coaching career on both the
high school and junior college levels in the Lone Star
State. Cox is determ ined to build a winning tradition for
Lady Colonel basketball.
Success has followed George Cox throughout life,
be it in academics, coaching , or life in general. There are
few better examples of the proverbial "All-American Boy"
image than found in this fri endly and outgoing Texan. As
a student-athlete at Abilen e Christian College, he was
a four-year letterman on the football team and was active
in campus life serving as vice president of the student
association and the ACC rodeo club. His personality and
concern for fellow students were key factors in his
selection as Mr. Abilene Christian College runner-up in
1969 and Class Favorite in both 1966 and 1969. He
graduated from ACC in 1969 and later earned his Texas
teaching certification and master's degree in education
from West Texas State University in 1977.
EKU's second-year mentor lists recruiting as his
strength and calls himself a Christian coach who believes
strongly in honesty, integrity, and hard work, and is also
realistic enough to believe nothing really great or worthwhile can be built without deep commitment, unity, and
everyone giving their best all of the time.
Cox's coaching days began as a football coach in
1969. After achieving success as coach of that sport, he
became the girl's high school basketball coach in 1977 at
Nazareth, TX. In one year at that school , his team won 40
and lost 4 enroute to the Texas Class B state
championship. From there, Cox moved on to Carthage,

12

TX, where he led that school to a five year record of 14025 and a state runner-up trophy in 1982. He was honored
that same year as t he Tex as Girl's High School Coach of
the Year.
In 1983, he was hired as the head coach at Tyler
Junior College in Texas and during the next three years
built one of the top JUGO programs for women's
basketball in the nation. In three years at Tyler, Coxcoached teams compiled a 86-14 record and were ranked
in the NJ CAA top 10 each year.
His Tyler teams compiled season records of 32-3, 285, and 26-6 while e ither winning or tying for the Texas
Eastern Conference championship. Cox was named

ngelo Botta, the former head women 's coach at
Tusculum College in Greenville, TN, joined coach
George Cox's staff in August. The 35-year-old New
Jersey native had spent all but one year in the East
Tennessee area following graduation from Tusculum in
1975. He earned his master's degree in 1977 from East
Tennessee State University.
In addition to his head coaching experience at his
alma mater, Botta has served as head girls' coach at
Morris Catholic High School in Denville, NJ, and as
assistant boys' and girls' coach at Chuckey Doak High
School in Afton, TN. He also served as elementary
basketball coach for four years in Greeneville and was a
student assistant for two years at Tusculum.

I

n his first year as head coach of the Eastern Kentucky
University Lady Colonel basketball team, George Cox
suffered through a severe case of shock as he moved
up to the Division I level after a storybook career on the
junior college level. In three years at Tyler (Texas) Junior
College, the 41-year-old native Texan lost only 14 times
while winning 86. Last season he agonized through 18
losses and enjoyed only nine victories.
The 1987-88 season will be different, or so Cox
hopes. He has good reason to be more optimistic than
last year when he inherited a youthful and inexperienced
team that relied on hard work and overachievment rather
than pure talent. While 1986-87 was a frustrating season
for the Lady Colonels, who at times found it difficult to
simply practice because of injuries and illness, the 198788 campaign should provide a drastic increase in player
numbers and talent as Cox has lined up a pre-season
roster that contains 16 student-athletes, including nine
newcomers.
The Lady Colonels' talent pool is expected to create
considerable competition for starting positions. The one
returnee who should have a solid hold on her position is
senior forward Carla Coffey, a 6-0 southpaw, who led the
Lady Colonels in scoring and rebounding a year ago with
a 21.0 average and 9.5 rebounds. The Mt. Washington,
Ky., native set a new EKU season scoring average record

and her 547 points in a season ranks second in school
history. Coffey should be a good bet to repeat as an AllOhio Valley Conference selection. Sondra Miller, a senior
guard from Hazard, Ky. , (13.4 ppg and 4.4 reb.) returns
along with 5-10 junior forward Karen Carrico of
Bardstown, Ky., (6.2 ppg and 6.8 reb.). Both girls started
for the past two seasons. Also returning after sitting out
much of last year with a knee injury is sophomore guard
Tina Reece from Austin, Ind. Reece earned a starting
position at point guard midway through her freshman
season and was looking forward to a brilliant sophomore
year when she suffered a pre-season injury to her knee.
Reece was granted an injury redshirt year by the NCAA.
Among the newcomers that are expected to make an
immediate impact are junior college transfers Cathy
Snipes (6-1, C, from Northeast Oklahoma J.C.). Aquanta
Milligan (5-11, F, Shelby State C.C.). Stacy Calhoun (510, G, Parkland C.C.), Latonya Fleming (5- 8, F, Crowder
J.C.), and freshman Kentucky All-Stater Kelly Cowan (510, G, Pulaski County H.S.).
The Lady Colonels will play a rugged 26-game
schedule that includes defending NCAA champion
Tennessee along with Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio
University, Stetson, Western Kentucky, and an
appearan ce in the Ole Miss Lady Rebels' Dial Classic.

aria Coffey, a two-year starter, returns for her senior
season that she hopes can equal the sterling performance
of a year ago. She averaged 21.0 to set a new single season
EKU Lady Colonel scoring average and finished among the
nation 's top 50 scorers. For the attractive southpaw, who
possesses an unorthodox yet very effective shooting style, she
hopes to provide valuable leadership to the 1987-88squad which
has nine new faces doting the roster. In addition to the season
scoring average record, Coffey scored a school-record 36 points
on 17 of 25 shooting from the field in the season finale victory
against arch-rival Morehead State. She closed out her junior year
with 547 points, the second highest single season total in Lady
Colonel history. Her 223 made field goals also ranks second
behind Peggy Gay's 231 during the 1978-79 year. She ranked
second on the team in rebounding last year with 9.5 grabs per
game which ranked her among the conference leaders. The

ondra Miller, a firey competitor who came to Eastern three
years ago as Kentucky's girls' high school scoring
champion, returns for her final year as a Lady Colonel. In
addition to becoming a consistent all-around performer, Sondra
has also proved to be the most durable player on the team as she
is the only returnee who has started in all 53 EKU games during
her sophomore and junior years. After being a bit tentative at
shooting the ball as a sophomore, Sondra put the ball up more
often and with better accuracy last year. The coaching staff
would like to see her continue to shoot more especially with the
three-point rule. She has good range. A mystery with Sondra has
been her poor free throw shooting average which has hovered
around the 50 percent mark for her college career. Her 13.4
scoring average could have been higher last year had she been
better from the charity stripe. She scored in double figures in 19

or Tina Reece the 1986-87 season was a nightmare as she
suffered a non-basketball related knee injury before preseason practice began and then re-injured the knee five
games into the year and was knock ed out of action the remainder
of the season. Fortunately for Tina, she was granted an injury
redshirt year by the NCAA. Her recovery from knee surgery was
successful and she worked hard in post-season conditioning and
during the summer to come back this year in excellent physical
shape. She hopes to earn a starting position at point guard where
she took over midway through her freshman year in 1985-86. An
excellent passer and ball handler, Tina possesses the ability and
court awareness to get her team into a running game or slow the
game down into a halfcourt pace. A deadly shooter from 15-20
feet, Tina welcomed the new three-point rule. She also takes
great pride in her free throw shooting. She is the daughter of

an Marshel is looking to close out her career in style this
year after seeing more playing time last year as a junior
than her previous two years combined. Blessed with natural
athletic ability, Van is an outstanding jumper and has excellent
quickness. She also handles the ball well at the forward position.
Despite excellent shooting form, Van has not been consistent
from either the field or the free throw stripe. A lack of concentration and ill-timed aggressive play have hampered Van's

ebecca Chesnut is looking to end her playing career on a
winning note at Eastern. After transferring from Parkland
Community College in her hometown of Champaign last
year she had grown accustomed to winning as her JUGO team
went 53-11 in two years that she was at that school. Rebecca
stepped in last year as a junior and won the starting point guard
spot. She started each of the first seven games and nine of the
first 10 before platooning the remainder of the year. Blessed with
outstanding quickness, Rebecca has the ability to make things
happen on the floor. Coach Cox would like to see her become
more aggressive especially on the defensive end of the floor. She
possesses a nice jumper from the perimeter and can be
particularly effective against zone defenses. During her career at
Parkland, Rebecca averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 assists per
contest and was a key in her team 's second place finish in the
1986 NJCAA Region 24 tournament and a 30-4 record. Rebecca
is the daughter of John and Judy Chesnut of Sidney near
Champaign . Career Bests . . . FGs Made, 7 vs. East Tennessee

allie Burger, the tallest player to ever wear a Lady Colonel
uniform , is a late-bloomer as far as basketball talents go.
Despite a wealth of basketball experience, she has the
athletic ability and the desire to develop into a good college
player. She first came to EKU as a high jumper in track, but was
drafted during mid-season last year by Coach Cox to give
basketball a try and she stuck with the team , providing valuable
help to an injury and inexperience-plagued Lady Colonel squad.
Hallie received valuable training in the day-to-day practice
sessions and saw limited playing time near the end of the season .
Her attitude has been super and she is eager to improve her
strength and basketball skills. At 6-3, she could develop into an
inside defensive force, something the Lady Colonels lacked last
season.

Eastern Kentucky Univers ity

he idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference was
o riginated in 1941 , but could not be implemented
until after World Wa r II. In 1948 five schools -Western
Ken tuck y, Eastern Kentucky, Murray, Morehead, and
Louisvi lle - wit hdrew from the Kentucky Interco lleg iate
At hletic Conference and were joined by Evansv ille in
form in g the origina l membership of the OVC. They were
joined sho rt ly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and
Marshall.
The membership has changed somewhat over the
years. Middle T ennessee joined t he league in 1952, East
Tennessee in 1957, and Austin Peay in 1962. They
replaced Lou isville, w hi c h became independent in 1949,
and Marshall and Evansvill e, which departed in 1952. East
Tennessee left in 1978 and was rep laced by Ak ron, which
began competition in 1980, and Youngstown joined the
leag ue race in 1981. Western Kentucky withdrew its
membership at th e conclusion of the 198 1-82 athletic
year.
In 1955 t he Nationa l Co lleg iate Ath letic Associatio n
fo rmally recogn ized the OVC as a major basketball

T

conference, giving the league's champion an automatic
bid to the post-season N CAA Tournament. At t he time,
the OVC was only the second s ix-team conference to
obta in majo r status f rom the NCAA. Pri or to 1955,
Western Kentucky , Eastern Kentucky, and Murray were
the only OVC members ranked as major basketball
powers.
In 1978, t he O VC began footbal l competition in the
NCAA Divi sion I-AA which offers a post-season
championship playoff system. Eastern Kentucky
captured th e 1979 and 1982 national championsh ip titles
and has represented the OVC in two other championship
games in 1980 and 1981, finishing in the runnersup slot
th ose years.
The adm inistrat ion of the conference is now supervised by James Delany, who formerly served on t he staff
of the NCAA.
Delany is the OVC's fourth commissioner, foll owing
Art Guepe (1963-75), Pau l Dietzel (1975-76), and Bob
Vanatta (1976-79).
