The University
astern Kentucky University is a regional coeducational public institution of higher education offering
general and liberal arts programs, pre-professional and
professional training in education and various other
fields at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Located in Richmond, Kentucky, Eastern has a distinguished record of more than seven decades of
educational service to the Commonwealth'.
Eastern was established in 1906. The campus of the
old Central University, founded in 1874, was selected the
site of the new school.
In 1922, Eastern became a four-year institution
known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and
Teachers College.
In 1935, a graduate program was approved at
Eastern, leading to the Master of Arts in Education. In
1948, the General Assembly removed the word
"Teachers" from the name of the College and granted the
College the right to award non-professional degrees.
The most significant day since its founding came for
Eastern February 26, 1966, when Governor Edward T.
Breathitt signed into law a bill renaming the institution

Eastern Kentucky University and sanctioning the awarding of graduate degrees in academic fie lds other than
education.
Ever-mindful of the purpose of its founding , Eastern
continues to recognize its historic function of preparing
quality teachers for the elementary and secondary
schools of the Commonwealth. However, a strong liberal
arts curriculum leading to appropriate degrees, together
with pre-professiona l courses in several areas and
graduate programs, enable Eastern to uniquely serve the
Commonwealth as a regional university.

Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk
EKU's Eighth President

r. H . Hanly Funderburk, Jr., is now in his second
academic year as eighth president of Eastern Kentucky University. He was unanimously elected by the
EKU Board of Regents in November, 1984 to succeed Dr.
J .C. Powell as president and assumed office Jan. 1, 1985.
Throughout his more than 31 years of service to
education, Dr. Funderburk, 54, has held to his commitme nt to excellence in the classroom , in the research
laboratory , and as a university administrator.
Dr. Funderburk 's background in many ways parallels
that of many other of Eastern Kentucky University's
founders - modest beginnings as a farm boy, earning his
educ ation , military service , a welcomer of responsibility ,
enthusiastic, impatient of mediocrity .
A native of Carrollton, Alabama, President
Funderburk earned the bachelor of science degree in
agricultural science from Auburn University, working on
a family farm each summer between terms. Following

completed study for the doctor of philosophy degree in

Dr. Funderburk held progressively responsible
positions in teaching, research and administration during
his years at Auburn University where he served with
distinction as president from 1980 to 1983. Prior to his
post at Auburn , Dr. Funderburk served as chancellor of
Auburn University at Montgomery, a regional un_iversity
that serves south central Alabama. The 500-acre campus
and its twenty million dollar physical plant was developed during his tenure there and today stands as a
testimonial to his administrative and leadership ability.
On his philosophy concerning the role of intercol legiate athletics, Dr. Funderburk says, " I believe that a
reasonable program of intercollegiate athletics , operated
in an ethical , rational manner is an important part of an
institution of higher education. We must not lose sight of
the fact that academics are our primary purpose, and we
must remember that participants on our teams are
student-athletes. It is also imperative that intercollegiate
ath letics be conducted on a very high level of integrity.
"Within this framework , I believe that athletics have a
real ro le to play in the educational experience . A sound ,
competit ive program of athletics p rovides a ra llying point
for an institution 's alumni and can be of benefit to the
other, more fundamenta l, purposes of a university. "

Striving For Academic Excellence
o mm ited to the goal of excellence in academics as
well as in athletics, Eastern Kentucky University has
establish ed an academic counseling program to assist
student-athletes in earning a quality education. Athletic
Acad emic Counselor Joan Hopkins coordinates
acad emic services for all participants in EKU's men's and
wom en 's intercollegiate athletic programs. Now in her
first year on Eastern's faculty, Joan has a strong personal
comm itment to student-athletes' completing their
degrees while they compete for athletic honors as well.
" My main responsibility is to provide our student
athletes with sufficient academic counseling and other
acad emic assistance to ensure that each one makes
prog ress toward the attainment of a degree," said
Hopk ins. " In so doing , I am !the official advisor of all
the athletes who have not declared a major. I coordinate a
stud ent-athlete study table for tutoring and structured
study groups and I help in determining an athlete's
eligi bility according to NCAA regulations ."
Centrally located in the University's Department of
Learning Skills, Hopkins' office provides academic
coun seling and advising for all student athletes but
especially focuses on the freshmen and on academically

disadvantaged students. "Student athletes have very
special needs. They have to meet constant demands on
their mental and physical being. They are continually
striving to be the best on the playing field as well as in the
classroom. My job enables me to assist and encourage
them toward these goals. I become their "coach" in the
academic arena."
Working closely with administrators, coaches,
faculty, graduate assistants, and tutors, Hopkins
coordinates an evening study table for student-athletes;
arranges tutoring and study groups; conducts
workshops on such topics as time management and
study skills; provides individual counseling and referral
for academic, personal , and career concerns; teaches a
specialized academic orientation course for ~·treshmen
athletes; and advises students about their academic
requirements and progress.
"My job is a very challanging and rewarding one,"
says Hopkins. 'Watching the athletes be successful in
completing an algebra problem or performing an athletic
feat is especially gratifying. Academics and athletics can
compliment each other. Success in the academic area
can aid in success on the athletic fields. "

and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the
main auditorium . A total of 626,276 board feet of lumber
form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches gracefully 81 feet above floor level, is southern pine finished in
its natural beauty.
In addition to the main auditorium, which seats 6,500

located at the east end of the main arena floor.
Since the women's basketball program began playing
its games in Alumni Coliseum, the C_o lonels have

Soaring With a New Spirit

George N. Cox
Head Coach

W

hen the head coaching position became vacant last
summer, Eastern Kentucky University's search
committee went looking for a proven coach that has built
winning programs. They found just the person in George
N. Cox, a Texas native, who has been unbelievably
successful in his nine-year coaching career on both the
high school and junior college levels in the Lone Star
State. Cox is determined to instill a New Spirit and build a
winning tradition for Lady Colonel basketball.
Success has followed George Cox throughout life,
be it in academics, coaching, or life in general. There are
few better examples of the proverbial "All-American Boy"
image than found in this friendly and outgoing Texan. As
a student-athlete at Abilene Christian College, he was
a four-year letterman on the football team and was active
in campus life serving as vice president of the student
association and the ACC rodeo club. His personality and
concern for fellow students were key factors in his
selection as Mr. Abilene Christian College runner-up in
1969 and Class Favorite in both 1966 and 1969. He
graduated from ACC in 1969 and later earned his Texas
teaching certification and master's degree in education
from West Texas State University in 1977.
mentor lists recruiting as his
EKU's first-year
strength and calls himself a Christian coach who believes
strongly in honesty, integrity, and hard work, and is also
realistic enough to believe nothing really great or worthwhile can be built without deep commitment, unity, and
everyone giving their best all of the time.
Cox's coaching days began as a football coach in
1969. After achieving success as coach of that sport, he
became the girl's high school basketball coach in 1977 at
Nazareth, TX. In one year at that school, his team won 40
and lost 4 enroute to the Texas Class B state
championship. From there, Cox moved on to Carthage,

12

TX, where he led that school to a five year record of 14025 and a state runner-up trophy in 1982. He was honored
that same year as the Texas Girl's High School Coach of
the Year.
In 1983, he was hired as the head coach at Tyler
Junior College in Texas and during the next three years
built one of the top JUCO programs for women's
basketball in the nation. In three years at Tyler, Coxcoached teams compiled a 86-14 record and were ranked
in the NJCAA top 10 each year.
His Tyler teams compiled season records of 32-3, 285, and 26-6 while either winning or tying for the Texas
Eastern Conference championship. Cox was named

1986-87 Season Outlook
new coach and the return of six letterwinners from
year's young and inexperienced team has
generated a great deal of excitement in the 1986-87
Eastern Kentucky University Lady Colonel basketball
team.
George Cox, a proven winner on the high school and
junior college coaching levels, was chosen in mid-August
to succeed Dr. Dianne Murphy as EKU's sixth head
coach. Murphy resigned the post in June after seven
years at the helm. The 40-year-old Cox, a Texas native, is
the first man to hold the Eastern head coaching position.
His hiring resulted in immediate excitement from fans
throughout the campus and community due in large
measure to his remarkable nine-year coaching record of
266 wins and only 43 losses. During the past three
seasons, Cox guided Tyler Junior College in the Lone
Star State to an 86-14 record. In six years of high school
coaching, the Abilene Christian College graduate
compiled a 180-29 slate and led the 1977 Nazareth High
School squad to the Texas Class B state championship.
The return of six letterwinners who were starters at
one time or another last season also gives reason for
expectations of a better year than last season's 8-17 mark
and last place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference. Youth
and inexperience were the trademarks of the 1985-86
EKU team and youth will continue to be a characteristic
of this year's squad. However, inexperience will not be
used as an excuse this season because everyone got their
time on the firing line last year. To show how young the

A

Lady Colonels will be in 1986-87, simply look at the
roster. It reveals one senior, six juniors, four sophomores,
and two freshmen.
Leading the returnees is Carla Coffey, a 6-0, junior
forward who averaged 12 points and a team-leading 8.2
rebounds last year. The Mt. Washington product started
in all but one game as a sophomore. Also back is 5-7
guard Tina Reece, a sophomore from Austin, IN, who
earned a starting position mid-way through her freshman
year and averaged 10.3 points and 3.2 assists. Sondra
Miller, a 5-8 junior guard from Hazard, also started in all
but one game and averaged 5.9 points and 3.0 rebounds.
Another part-time performer was Pam Taylor, a 5-11
sophomore center from Russell Springs, who showed
flashes of brilliance as a raw freshman. She averaged 7.3
points and 6.1 rebounds and had individual game highs of
26 points and 16 rebounds. Karen Carrico, a 5-10
forward-guard from Bardstown , returns for her
sophomore season and should be fully recovered from a
severe ankle sprain that knocked her out of the starting
lineup in early January. Still she managed to average 6.1
points and 4.9 rebounds.
Newcomers include Tracy Korbutt, a 6-1 junior
center, who transferred last year from Clemson
University, junior college transfer Rebecca Chesnut, 5-3,
from Champaign, 111., and freshman Regie Rattler from
Louisville Butler High School and Tadgi DeBerg from
Indiana state runner-up Scottsburg high school.

hampered her mobility last season and resulted in fewer
minutes of playing time. One of the most dedicated
players on the squad, Lois was a walk-on during her
freshman and sophomore years, but earned a
scholarship last year. She is a true team player who puts
the squad's success first above personal goals. After
seeing action in 20 games as a sophomore, Lois played in
14 games last season. Despite the drop in playing time,
she always managed to maintain a good mental attitude.
She came to EKU out of Oldham County High School, a
school with a rich girl's basketball history. She served as
manager of the 1983 Kentucky All -Star team . She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Buntyn of Crestwood.

and was named a Street and Smith honorable mention
All-American. A knee injury slowed her progress at
Clemson. She is expected to be a major scoring threat
inside for EKU and possesses a very soft shooting touch
in the paint area. Tracy also possesses outstanding
leadership qualities which will prove valuable on a team
that has no seniors on its roster. If she can escape the
injury bug that has hampered her collegiate career, Tracy
will see a lot of action in the post position. She is the
daughter of Tom and Carol Korbutt of Greer.

Personal Profile

Coach Cox on Korbutt: "Tracy will have to give us an
inside scoring punch and play bigger than her height in
order for us to have success. She is dependable,
consistent, and versatile and could possibly play three
different positions for us. Tracy 's outstanding character
lends stability to our team."

Eastern Kentucky University

A1HI,EI·1cs &
RECREATION
In addition to being a highly respected academic institution, Eastern Kentucky
University is also noted for its outstanding
program of intercollegiate athletics and
recreational sports. EKU' s program places
strong emphasis on the total development
of the student athlete.
A member of the competitive Ohio
Valley Conference, the Colonels represent
Eastern in nine men's and eight women's
sports in National Collegiate Athletic Association play. The men compete in baseball,
basketball, cross country, football, golf,
tennis, swimming, indoor and outdoor track.
Eastern's football team has attained national
acclaim in Division I-AA, having reached
the finals four consecutive years and having
captured the NCAA championship in 1979
and 1982.

The women partiopate in basketba}J,
cross country, field hockey, tennis, indoor
and outdoor track, volleyball, and swimming.
EKU student athletes are recognized
annually for their performance both on and
off the athletic playing field, earning both
athletic and academic honors.
Eastern is proud of its extensive intramural sports program for men and women
students. EKU students benefit from the
opportunity to compete in such team and
individual sports as basketball , softball, flag
football, soccer, volleyball, tennis , golf,
swimming, track and field, wrestling,
archery, and badminton.
Outstanding athletics and recreational
facilities are located just a short walk from
the campus residence halls . Forming the
nucleus of the athletic-physical education
complex are a pair of multi-purpose structures - Alumni Coliseum, the home of
Eastern's basketball and swimming team,
and the Robert B. Begley Building, a massive
structure that serves as the football stadium
and can accommodate 2,000 students simultaneously in 36 classrooms and three
gymnasiums.
Other indoor facilities include the
Weaver Health Building basketball courts
and the Greg Adams Building, a tennis
center. Outdoor facilities include the
"Turkey" Hughes Baseball Field, a nine-lane
track, 18-hole golf course, 27-acre Thomas
E. McDonough Intramural Fields, the
Gertrude Hood Women's Athletics Field,
and dozens of lighted tennis courts.

Eastern 's school colors,
maroon and white,
were derived from
crimson and cream,
the athletic team
colors of the University's predecessor,
Central University,
a Presbyterian school.

scholarship after playing that sport and basketball
at Harford Community College in Maryland. She says her
first love is basketall and she gave up playing field hockey
this year to have the opportunity to play Division I
basketball. A quick and speedy player, Kathy is expected
to add needed depth at the forward or wing position. Her
maturity will also be a valuable addition to this young
team . Kathy seems to have her priorities in order for the
future and has her sights set on becoming an FBI agent in
the narcotic division. Her basketball talents earned her
first team NJ CAA Region 20 honors and she was selected
the Region 20 All-Star game most valuable player in 1985
as well as MVP of her team at Harford. Kathy is the
daughter of Edna and Michael Branch of Abingdon.

quickness and jumping ability that are keys in our game.
Although she has not played competitively for over a
year, we are looking for her to be a contributing factor this
season. Kathy definitely gives our team added depth at
the perimeter position."

Why I Came To Eastern: "I selected Eastern because of the academic curriculum in criminal justice which is
the second best program in the country. I also had a scholarship offer in field hockey and a chance to play
basketba ll on the Division I level. Whil e playing field hockey last year, I did not feel th e ex hilaration that
playing basketball provided me, and I also never accepted the fact that I wouldn 't be able to play basketball,

ebecca Chesnut transferred to Eastern after a
brilliant career at Parkland Community College in
Champaign, IL, where she helped lead her team to a 53-11
record over the last two seasons. She possesses
outstanding quickness and speed. Her former coach at
Parkland, Stan Swank, says Rebecca is as fast as
"greased lightning." Her arrival at EKU could not have
come at a better time as a knee injury is expected to
sideline Tina Reece, the Lady Colonels' only returning
true point guard. She will give EKU needed leadership at
the point position and is expected to be a coach on the
floor because of her intelligent play. During her career at
Parkland , she averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 assists and
was a key in her team's second place finish in the NJ CAA

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE
he idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference was
originated in 1941 , but could not be implemented
until after World War II. In 1948 five schools -Western
Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Murray, Morehead, and
Louisville - withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference and were joined by Evansville in
forming the original membership of the OVC. They were
joined shortly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and
Marshall.
The membership has changed somewhat over the
years. Middle Tennessee joined the league in 1952, East
Tennessee in 1957, and Austin Peay in 1962. They
replaced Louisville, which became independent in 1949,
and Marshall and Evansville, which departed in 1952. East
Tennessee left in 1978 and was replaced by Akron, which
began competition in 1980, and Youngstown joined the
league race in 1981. Western Kentucky withdrew its
membership at the conclusion of the 1981-82 athletic
year.
In 1955 the National Collegiate Athletic Association

formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball
conference, giving the league's champion an automatic
bid to the post-season NCAA Tournament. At the time,
the OVC was only the second six- team conference to
obtain major status from the NCAA. Prior to 1955,
Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Murray were
the only OVC members ranked as major basketball
powers.
In 1978, the OVC began football competition in the
NCAA Division I-AA which offers a post-season
championship playoff system. Eastern Kentucky
captured the 1979 and 1982 national championship titles
and has represented the OVC in two other championship
games in 1980 and 1981, finishing in the runnersup slot
those years.
The administration of the conference is now supervised by James Delany, who formerly served on the staff
of the NCAA.
Delany is the OVC's fourth commissioner, following
Art Guepe (1963-75) , Paul Dietzel (1975-76) , and Bob
Vanatta (1976-79).
