Alumni Coliseum - Home of the Colonels
Alumni Coliseum, which first opened for basketball
action in 1963, has been the home arena for Eastern
Kentucky University women's basketball since the 197677 season when the women moved from Weaver Health
Building.
Located on a southern slope of the EKU campus,
Alumni Coliseum forms the nucleus of a thoughtfully
planned sports complex. The Coliseum is a massive
physical plant and features a great triumph in architectural design with its modern laminated cross-arched
roof - the world's largest of its kind - spanning 309 feet
and providing an unobstructed view of events held in the
main auditorium. A total of 626,276 board feet of lumber
form the 170 beams, and the roof, which arches gracefully 81 feet above floor level, is southern pine finished in
its natural beauty.
In addition to the main auditorium, which seats 6,500
for basketball games and 8,000 for other programs, the
building contains four basketball courts in an auxiliary
gymnasium on the east end; eight classrooms; twenty
offices; both indoor and outdoor swimming pools;
shower and locker rooms, a projection room, a training
room, and weight room. A hydraulic-operated stage is
located at the east end of the main arena floor.
Since the women's basketball program began playing
its games in Alumni Coliseum, the Colonels have
compiled an overall home record of 52 wins and 46
losses. Since taking over the head coaching duties in
1979, Dr. Dianne Murphy's teams have had a 39-27 record
in 'the Coliseum.

1984-85 Basketball Prospectus
Four letterwinners led by senior All-American
candidate Tina Cottle return for Dr. Dianne Murphy's
1984-85 Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball
team. The Colonels will be hard pressed to duplicate last
year's second place finish (10-4) in the Ohio Valley
Conference following the departure of EKU's all-time
leading scorer Lisa Goodin, a four-year starter who has
graduated.
Murphy will look to Cottle for scoring and rebounding, and also for leadership as the Miami, Fla., native
looks to close out her college career in fine fashion. The
6-1, 160 lb. pivot player led Eastern in rebounding last
year with 9.5 grabs and finished second ih scoring behind
Goodin with a 15.2 average. Last year was Cattle's first in
a Colonel uniform after playing at Austin Peay and then at
Miami Dade-South Community College where she
earned Junior College All-American honors in 1981-82.
Also returning will be seniors Shannon Brady and
Marcia Haney along with Margy Shelton, a junior. Brady,
a 6-1 forward-post player, was a regular last season
finishing with a 9.6 scoring average and 6.1 rebounds per
game. Shelton, a 6-0 forward, also saw considerable
action as a starter and averaged 6.9 points and 5.3
rebounds. Haney, 5-11, was one of Murphy's more
reliable players off the bench at a forward position. She
chipped in with 5.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Also returning for their sophomore seasons are Van
Marshel and Lois Buntyn.
Murphy, along with assistant coaches Nell Hensley
and Linda Myers, inked seven. talented recruits that are

expected to provide immediate help. At the top of the list
is transfer Angela Fletcher, a 5-9 junior guard, who
dazzled opponents while at Roane State Community
College enroute to JUCO All-American honors. Murphy
will also get help at guard from Heidi Gast, a 5-5
freshman, who averaged 23.2 points per game during her
career at Danbury High School in Lakeside, OH, and 5-7
freshman Sondra Miller, Kentucky's prep scoring leader
at M.C. Napier High School with a 28-point average.
Other newcomers are Carla Coffey, a 6-0 freshman
forward-post player from Bullitt Central High School, 51O freshman forward Tracey Underwood from Lexington
Lafayette High School, Julie Levis, a 5-8 guard from
Oldham County, and Lisa Harvey, a 6-3 center from Silver
Spring , MD. The team will be further strengthened by
the addition of transfer Lori Hines, who played at East
Tennessee the past three years. As a high school senior
she led Pulaski County to the Kentucky State
Tournament title.
Murphy has lined up an attractive 27-game schedule
which includes an appearance in the Lady Sunshine
·c lassic in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 23-24, which is comprised
of Auburn, Arkansas, Miami (Fla.), and EKU. Eastern will
also host its annual Colonel Classic, Dec. 7-8, with
Western Kentucky, Kent State and Duquesne providing
the opposition. In addition to the rugged 14-game round
robin OVC schedule, the Colonels will face nonconference foes Dayton, Southeast Missouri, Bellarmine,
Evansville, Kentucky State, Cleveland State, Campbellsville, and Davis and Elkins College.

Building A Winning Tradition

Dr. Dianne Murphy
Head Coach

The steady improvement of the Eastern Kentucky
University women's basketball program over the past five
years can be attributed to an intensive approach, sound
recruiting tactics, and a commitment to hard work by
head coach, Dr. Dianne Murphy. Following a period of
years when the program was down, the Colonels are now
regarded as one of the top women's programs in the state
as well as considered one of the most competitive in the
Ohio Valley Conference.
As a coach and player, Murphy has achieved success
wherever she has been. As a student-athlete at
Tennessee Tech University, she lettered on the volleyball, basketball, and tennis teams. She graduated from
Tennessee Tech in Cookeville in 1972 with a B.S. degree
in Health and Physical Education. She earned her
Masters in the same field while working as a coaching
graduate assistant in the Tech program in 1973, and
completed her doctoral dissertation for a Ph.D. from the
Florida State University in 1980.
Murphy's coaching days started as the head basketball
coach at Shorter College in Rome, Ga., where she
coached the Hawkettes to 4-11, 20-8, and 13-11 seasons.
From 1976-79, she was at the helm of the Florida State
Lady Seminoles basketball program, and turned their
program around with excellent recruiting and a sound
coaching philosophy. In her first year at Florida State,

has taken a team who was 5-24 prior to her arrival and
produced seasons of 9-19, 16-14, 14-16, 14-13, and 17-11.
Last year, Murphy's team notched wins over Duke, from
the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, Wisconsin of the

Coach Murphy on Harvey: "Lisa is an extremely mobile
player for her size. She moves up and down the floor very
well. Lisa needs to improve her strength and endurance
through an extensive strength program, but she is a quick
learner and wants to play. She is very intelligent and will
fit into our program. She has a good attitude and work
habits. If Lisa doesn't become impatient, she could
become a good college player."

Julie Levis
i=r., 5-8, 130 lbs.
Guard
Crestwood, KY (Oldham Co. H.S.)
Major: Elementary Education
Julie Levis can be one of the Colonels most solid and
sound freshman players. She is an excellent shooter and
will help ease the loss of AII-OVC guard Lisa Goodin.
Levis is very intense and could play either the one or twoguard position. She has quickness to defend in a full
court situation, but will need to gain strength for
rebounding purposes. Coached at Oldham County High
School by Jim Randall, she played in the "Sweet Sixteen"
state basketball tournament at Eastern Kentucky University last March, and has been exposed to a quality basketball program. Levis earned more honors as an All-State
honorable mention and was voted "Most Athletic" by her
senior class. She averaged nine points and four rebounds
her senior year and shot 89 percent from the foul line and
57 percent from the field . Julie's parents are Frank and
Roseanne Levis.

all the physical ability to be a successful college player.
She can shoot, pass and push the ball down the floor
under control. Julie will need to improve her rebounding
and some of the finer points of the game, but she can play
and play very well."

Sondra Miller
Fr., .5 -7, 130 lbs.
Guard
Hazard, KY (M.C. Napier H.S.)
Major: Undeclared
One of the most prolific scorers in the state of Kentucky
last season, Sondra Miller brings to Eastern a good
outside scoring threat, fine passing skills, and a knack for
being in the right place at the right time. With the guard
position severely depleted by graduation, Miller could
become an important factor for the Colonels. At M.C.
Napier under coach Randy Napier, she averaged 28.5
points per game and shot 55 percent from the floor. She
established a school record by scoring 63 points in a
single game. She was named to the All-District, AllRegion, and All-State teams. Miller participated in the
Kentucky-Indiana All-Star series along with teammates
Carla Coffey and Tracey Underwood. She was the MVP of
her high school team and was the state's leading scorer
during the 1983-84 season. She was also named
honorable mention All-American and was a member of
the Beta Club. Sondra is the daughter of Clelland Ruth
Miller.

Coach Murphy on Miller: "Sondra is a tremendous scorer,
and a great passer and ball handler. She comes from an
excellent high school program which will benefit her
immensely. Sondra is a team player and often times has
the tendency to over pass rather than take the shot. We
expect great things from Sondra during her four-year
career at Eastern."

and field goals for two years. Underwood was selected to
the All-City team and was All-State honorable mention.
She participated in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star series
and averaged 9.3 rebounds her senior year for coach

Lisa Goodin
Sets High Standard to Break

Peggy Gay

No other basketball player in Eastern women's
basketball history has come close to achieving what Lisa
Goodin did in her four years in a Colonel uniform. The
Austin, Ind., native poured in 1,920 points during an
outstanding career.
The 5-6 sharpshooter will long be remembered for
her free throw accuracy as well as her scoring ability. In
two of her four seasons, Goodin led the nation's NCAA
Division 1 schools in free throw percentage. As a freshman, she connected on .897 percent of her charity tosses
and in her junior year she converted 91 percent.
A three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection,
Goodin was named to a number of post-season teams
during her tenure. She was named to the AII-OVC
Freshman team, AII-KWIC, and OVC All-Tournament
team. In addition, she was selected MVP of the 1981
Colonel Classic.
"Lisa has helped lead the women's basketball program here at Eastern to the level of distinction it enjoys
today," said Colonel head coach Dr. Dianne Murphy.

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE
The idea of forming the Ohio Valley Conference was
originated in 1941, but could not be implemented until
after World War II. In 1948 five schools - Western
Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Murray, Morehead and
Louisville - withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference and were joined by Evansville in
forming the original membership of the OVC. They were
joined shortly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and Marshall.
The membership has changed somewhat over the
years. Middle Tennessee joined the league in 1952, East
Tennessee in 1957 and Austin Peay in 1962. They
replaced Louisville, which became independent in 1949,
and Marshall and Evansville, which departed in 1952. East
Tennessee left in 1978 and was replaced by Akron, which
began competition in 1980, and Youngstown joined the
league race in 1981. Western Kentucky withdrew its
membership at the conclusion of the 1981-82 athletic
year.
In 1955 the National Collegiate Athletic Association

43

formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball
conference, giving the league's champion an automatic
bed to the post-season NCAA Tournament. At the time, the
OVC was only the second six-team conference to obtain
major status from the NCAA. Prior to 1955 Western
Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Murray were the only
OVC members ranked as major basketball powers.
In 1978, the OVC began football competition in the
NCAA Division I-AA which offers a post-season
championship playoff system. Eastern Kentucky captured
the 1979 and 1982 national championship titles and has
represented the OVC in two other championship games in
1980 and 1981.
The administration of the conference is now
supervised by James Delany, who formerly served on the
staff of the NCAA.
Delany is the OVC's fourth commissioner, following
Art Guepe (1963-75), Paul Dietzel (1975-76) and Bob
Vanatta ( 1976-79).

The University
Eastern Kentucky University i s a regional
coeducational public institution of higher education
offering general and liberal arts programs, preprofessional and professional train ing in education and
various other fields at both the undergraduate and
graduate levels. Located in Richmond, Kentucky, Eastern
has a distinguished record of more than seven decades of
educational service to the Commonwealth.
Eastern was established in 1906. The campus of the
old Centra l University, founded in 1874, was selected the
site of the new school.
In 1922, Eastern became a four-year institution
known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and
Teachers College.
In 1935, a graduate program was approved at Eastern,
leading to the Master of Arts in Education. In 1948, the
General Assembly removed the word "Teachers" from the
name of the College and granted the College the right to
award non-professional degrees.
The most significant day since its founding came for
Eastern February 26, 1966, when Governor Edward T.
Breathitt signed into law a bill renaming the institution

Eastern Kentucky Un iversity and sanctioning the awarding
of graduate degrees in academic fields other than
education.
Ever-mindful of the purpose of its founding, Eastern
continues to recognize its historic funtion of preparing
quality teachers for the elementary and secondary schools
of the Commonwealth. However, a strong liberal arts
curriculum leading to appropriate degrees, together with
pre-professional courses in several areas and graduate
programs, enable Eastern to uniquely serve the
Commonwealth as a regional university.

STRIVING FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
[

Committed to the goal of excellence in academics as
well as in athletics, Eastern Kentucky University has
established an academic counseling program to assist
student-athletes in earning a quality education. Athletic
Academic Counselor Jacqueline
Maki coordinates academic
services for all participants in
EKU's men's and women's
intercollegiate athletics program.
Beginning her ninth year on
Eastern's faculty, Jackie has a
strong persona I commitment to
student-athletes' completing their
degrees while they compete for
athletic honors as well.
"These students are highly
JACKIE MAKI
talented, motivated individuals
operating under so many different pressures and
expectations," notes Maki. "We try to provide the
information, encouragement, and resources to help them
perform at their 'personal best' academically and to
prepare realistically for successful professional and
personal lives after college."
Centrally located in the University's Department of
Learning Skills, Maki's office provides academic
counseling and advising for all student athletes but

especially focuses on the freshmen and on academically
disadvantaged students. "Adjusting to the pace and
responsibilities of university life is challenging enough for
most students," Maki typically tells the freshmen, "but as
athletes, you have to be super -organized and efficient to be
a good student while you're also investing several hours a
day in practice, con1petition, and team travel. It may not be
easy, but it is possible to excel in both worlds ... and we're
here to help you reach your own personal goals for
excellence."
Working closely with administrators, coaches, faculty,
graduate assistants, and tutors, Maki coordinates an
evening study table for student-athletes; arranges tutoring
and study groups; conducts workshops on such topics as
time management and study skills; provides individual
counseling and referral for academic, personal, and career
concerns; teaches a specialized academic orientation
course for freshman athletes; and advises students about
their academic requirements and progress.
"I think I have the best job on campus," Jackie Maki
boasts. "Every day I work with dozens of individuals from
diverse backgrounds who are really 'turned on' to learning,
growing, and personal success .. . both in athletics and in
the classroom. And in their genuineness, spontaneity, and
concern for' other people, these young men and women are
truly superstars to me."

Historic Richmond, where the famed Blue Grass
region meets the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, is
'
an urban university community of about 25,000 in a rich
tobacco .and farming area.
'
New inter- and intra -state highway systems enhance
Richmond's accessibility. 1-75 (north-south) passes within
a mile of the campus, and 1-64 (east-west) is only 30
minutes away. Kentucky expressways, · the Blue Grass,
Mountain, Daniel Boone, and Cumberland Parkways are
less than an hour's drive from Richmond.

,T he Campus
Beautiful
learning'' concept by providing comfortable living
conditions for almost 7,000 students in campus residence
halls. Eastern can accommodate more students on
campus than any other university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic
institution, Eastern is also noted for its program of
intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The
accornplishments of the Colonel athletic teams is a source
of great pride for the student body and campus community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment opportunities
as nationally known lecturers, ' artists, and entertainers
appear on campus. A wide variety of student and faculty
musical groups also provide a fine selection of
entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the athletic
arena, or campus life, Eastern continues its stride toward
excellence.

The nickname, "The Campus Beautiful'' aptly
describes the Eastern Kentucky University campus. Jt is
truly a beautiful atmosphere in which to live and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's system of
regional universities, is the 9ulmination of more than a
century of higher education development on its 350-acre
main campus in Richmond. Today's modern Eastern offers
some 300 degree programs and options in its nine
academic colleges and graduate school including
education~ allied health and nursing, computer science,
business, sciences, law enforce·m ent, recreation, and
environmental resources that provide educational
opportunities to meet society's demands.
The refinement of Eastern's academic programs has
been one of the foremost objectives of Dr. J .C. Powell, who
is completing his eighth year as the University's president.
The University seeks to fulfill the "living-while-

ALL-SPORTS CHAMPIONS
Eastern completed its most successful athletic year
ever in the Ohio Valley Conference by sweeping both AllSports Trophy awards in 1983-84, making it the first OVC
school to take both the men's and women's titles in the
same year .
The EKU men, winning the title for the first time since
1966, outdistanced defending champion Murray State by
1OV2 points, 103V2 to 93 . The Colonels won the league
championships in football, baseball, golf, indoor track, fifth
in basketball, fourth in tennis and second in outdoor track .
Eastern Kentucky's women, the defending All-Sports
Champion, won league crowns in cross country, volleyball
and outdoor track, second in basketball, and took third
place in tennis. Their total of 63 V2 points ran away from
second place Middle Tennessee, whose total of 46 points
narrowly edged third place Morehead State (45) and
fourth -place Murray State (42 V2 )
