CROSS COUNTRY
Eastern Kentucky University prepares for
the cross country season this year as it has any
other -- as prohibitive favorites but ready for the
challenge. The Lady Colonels have not lost to an
Ohio Valley Conference opponent since 1982 and
will look to capture their 17th consecutive conference title this fall. At the 1997 championship
meet, EKU won its 16th straight team crown and
added an individual title as well. Eastern has won
18 individual titles in the 19 years which the OVC
has held a women's cross country meet.
A strong trio returns for the 1998 season, led
by junior Sarah Blossom (Indianapolis, IN),
sophomore Celestina Ogbolugo (North
Tarrytown, NY) and sophomore Jenni Brown
(Salem, OH). All three were in the Colonels' top
five last year, finishing in the top four at the Ohio
Valley Conference championship meet. Blossom
took top individual honors in 1996. With the return of four of the top six, Eastern Kentucky's
future in cross country looks bright.
"We are looking to add three or four new faces
to the program during the 1998 season", stated an
excited Coach Rick Erdmann.

TRACK AND FIELD
A combination of youth and experience will
once again make Eastern Kentucky's women's
track and field team a force to be reckoned with in
the spring. The team returns a veteran distance
group, as well as some top perfonners in the middle
distances and sprints. The team's success however could lie in the hands of a strong recruiting
class and great improvement anticipated for
Eastern's relay teams.
Senior middle distance runner Jamie King
(Botkins, OH), an NCAA finalist in the 1500
meters ( 4: 19.30) at the 1997 outdoor championship meet, and sprinter Felecia Hawkins (Winter
Haven, FL) will give the Lady Colonels the leadership needed to be successful during the 1998
season. Hawkins will anchor the sprint team after running some of the fastest times ever turned
in by an Eastern Kentucky University athlete.
Hawkins ran the second fastest 200 meter time in
school history (23.94). Joining her will be a group
of the country's fastest high school athletes from
a year ago, some of whom finished high in the
national championships.

4

Eastern Kentucky has always been a NCAA
District III top ten team over the past 16 years,
with the university's highest place coming in
1988 with a third place finish. "Our main goal
is to be one of the top teams in the District III
each year and to compete against the top Division I programs in the country," stated Erdmann.
The Lady Colonels finished unbeaten during
the 1995 cross country season, proving that the
Eastern Kentucky team again ranks as one of the
premiere distance programs in the nation. With
wins against several nationally ranked teams during the year, the Lady Colonels have continued
to stay among the best.
Eastern Kentucky's cross country team
ranked fourth academically among national teams
during the 1995 season with an overall grade point
averageof3.47. "We have produced many Academic All-Americans during the past 15 years
and hope to produce many more," according to
Erdmann.
The Lady Colonels' schedule will again be challenging and should provide for some exciting competition.

The long and middle distance team will once
again be strong with Sarah Blossom (Indianapolis, IN), Mandy Jones (Somerset, KY) and Jamie
King leading the way. Also contributing will be a
strong sophomore class with distance runners
Jenni Brown (Salem, OH) and Celestina Ogbolugo
(North Tarrytown, NY). Eastern Kentucky once
again will be into the hurdles with a total of four
hurdlers, some of whom were ranked nationally.
Senior Vashti Canty (Atlanta, GA) returns as the
runner-up in the OVC in the 400 meter hurdles
(1:00.70) along with Lystra Bartholomew the
number five high school hurdler in 1995. Also
returning is Mama Moore a sprinter (24.9) and
hurdler from Memphis, TN. Alysia Barton
(Woodbridge, VA), the seventh ranked 100 meter
hurdler in the country, is just one of those hurdlers.
"We look for gradual development from our
freshmen, so that they are ready to compete
against the best nationally by the end of the season," explained Tim Moore, assistant coach. The
combination of youth and experience in the distance and sprints should have the Colonels in
contention for yet another OVC title in 1998.

CROSS COUNTRY
After having its streak of six consecutive
Ohio Valley Conference cross country titles
broken in 1995 and 1996, Eastern was back
on top in 1997. If past history is a guide,
then the Colonels could regain the title of
OVC Champions in 1998. The last time the
Colonels were denied titles in back-to-back
years was 1986, and they have finished as
champions or runnersup ever since.
The team will look to four returning runners to steJJ up and provide the leadership
necessary for their tenth title in 12 years.
Juniors Mohamed Musse (Fairfax, VA),

Daniel Koech (Nairobi, Kenya), Charles
Moore (Owensboro, KY) and sophomore
David Kabata (Nairobi, Kenya) figured
heavily into the Colonels' success in 1997
and look to build upon that experience.
Moore finished seventh at the OVC championships, second on the team at the meet.
To prepare for the challenge, the men's
schedule includes some of the top competition in the country. The Colonels will face a
very rigorous slate to get ready for the Ohio
Valley Conference and the NCAA District III
cross country championships.

TRACK
The men's indoor and outdoor team will
once again compete for the Ohio Valley Conference titles in 1998, looking to improve upon
1996's second and fourth place finish. The
men's program has consistently been in the
OVC's upper echelon and this year should
be no exception. This year's team should be
one of the most balanced teams in Eastern's
rich track tradition.
Coming off a great cross country season,
the distance and middle distance program
will be the center of attention during the 1998
season. The crew will be led by sophomore
David Kabata, senior Titus Ngeno, juniors
Daniel Koech, Mohamed Musse and Charles
Moore.
Two outstanding hurdlers return for the
Colonels- junior Daniel Blochwitz
(Niedswillinger, Germany) and senior Jeremy
Petter (Louisville, KY). Blochwitz won the
Ohio Valley Conference 400 meter hurdle title
in 1996 and qualified for the NCAA outdoor
track and field championship in his first campaign. He also set the Eastern Kentucky
University school record in the 400 hurdles
(50.61). Accomplishing a great deal in one
season was little surprise considering
Blochwitz had won eight German junior national titles before arriving at Eastern. Petter

finished second in the OVC 110 meter hurdles
in '96 and also ran the 400 meter hurdles during the season.
GaffeI Hippolyte, a junior college transfer,
should blend well with EKU's "double duty"
athletes to form a much-improved sprint team.
A junior college All-American from Alfred
State College in New York, Hippolyte will run
both the 200 and 400 meters for Eastern. At
ASJC, he won the regional championship in
the 200 and400 meters, receiving All-American status in the latter in 1995.
Also returning will be junior Carl Bunce
(Paris, KY). Bunce will be much improved
after two years of competition under his belt.
Bunce was a finalist in both the 100 and 200
meters at the OVC championship as a freshman. He has made a great transition to the
400 meters and looks to keep improving in
that event.
Newcomers to the program are junior
Shawn Afflick and freshman Caleb Deitch.
"We have more quality up front than in
the past, and the talent is spread among several phases of the program. We may not have
the depth that some aspects of the program
have enjoyed through the years, but we definitely have a good balance," offered assistant Tim Moore.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS

Eastern Kentucky University's track
and field program is not only one of the t~p
teams in the Southeast on the track, but with
nine GTE-CoSIDA Academic All-Americans
in 11 years it ranks among the best in the
country in the classroom. EKU's nine Academic All-Americans - Roger Chapman,
Allison Kotouch , Danny Copeland, Lisa
Malloy (2), Amy Clements (3) and Sarah Blossom - show the pride that the track program
has in academics.
Chapman, of Stevenage, England,
and a 1987 graduate ofEKU, boasted a 3.98
~ade point average at Eastern while completing a degree in computer science in three and
one half years. At the time of his selection,
Chapman was also an outstanding middle distance runner at Eastern holding school records
in the indoor 800 and 1,000 meter runs. Along
with his All-American honor, he received an
NCAA post-graduate scholarship to attend
the University of Edinburg, England.
Chapman now has his Doctorate and is a college professor in Montana.
Kotouch , of Baden, PA , was
Eastern's second track student-athlete and
first female to receive Academic All-American honors. She earned her degree in nursing, while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA
through her junior year. She was the 1985
Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year as a freshman and was an instrumental reason for EKU's dominance in OVC
cross country. She went on to Syracuse University to complete her masters degree in nursing.
Copeland, who was drafted by the
NFL's Cleveland Browns, was a criminal justice major with a 3.68 GPA from Meigs, G1:1.
While his main involvement at Eastern was m
football, he was an important ~sset to the
sprint relay teams. Copeland has Just recently
retired from the NFL after a four- year starting
stint at defensive back with the 1991 Super
Bowl champion Washington Redskins.
Malloy, of Mechanicsville, VA, is
E KU's first repeat member of the Academic
All-American team. An English graduate,
Malloy was OVC cross country champion two
years and also excelled during the indoor and
outdoor track seasons.

18

Malloy is now teaching in Richmond, VA, and was voted the "Teacher of
the Year" in 1993.
C lements, of Erlanger, KY, is
Eastern's second repeat member of this elite
group of the Acade!llic All-American ~earn.
She is the first to wm the award three t1mes.
She was a Physical Education major and
graduated in May, 1995. Clements has recorded many 4.0 grade point averages while
at EKU. Clements has won the OVC individual cross country championship in 1991,
1992 and 1994.
Blossom, of Indianapolis, IN, is a
junior at EKU this season and has bee_n ll!1
Ohio Valley Conference cross country md1vidual champion. She has been one of the
reasons the women have been able to keep
its streak of 16 conference cross country
championships going. She has been a part
of three ofthose wins. Sarah has main tamed
a 4.0 GPA while at Eastern.
The GTE-Co SIDA Academic AllAmerican awards are v oted on by the
nation's college sports information directors. To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 or better
grade point average and excel in athletic
competition.
With nine Academic All-Americans Eastern Kentucky University's track
and field program re-emphasizes the meaning of STUDENT in student-athlete, and
continues to prove that academ ics and athletics can work together. Academics, as well
as athletics, at Eastern Kentucky University is "A MATTER OF PRIDE".

STRIVING FORACADEMICEXCELLENCE

Committed to the goal ofexcellence in academics as well as in athletics, Eastern Kentucky University has established an academic counseling program to assist studentathletes in earning a quality education. Athletics Academic Counselor Joan Hopkins coordinates academic services for all participants in EKU's men's and women's intercollegiate athletics programs. Now in her 12th
year on Eastem's faculty, Joan has a strong
personal commitment to student-athletes
completing their degrees while they compete
for athletics honors as well.
"My main responsibility is to to provide
our student athletes with sufficient academic
counseling and other academic assistance
to ensure that each one makes progress toward the attainment of a degree," said
Hopkins. "In so doing, I am the official advisor of all the athletes who have not declared
a major. I coordinate a student-athlete study
table for tutoring and structured study
groups and I help in determining an athlete's
eligibility according to NCAA regulations."
Centrally located in the university's Department of Leaming Skills, Hopkins' office
provides academic counseling and advising
for all student athletes but especially focuses
on the freshmen and on academically disad-

vantaged students. "Student-athletes have
very special needs. They have to meet constant demands on their mental and physical
being. They are continually striving to be
the best on the playing field as well as in the
classroom. My job enables me to assist and
encourage them toward these goals. I become their 'coach' in the academic arena."
Working closely with administrators,
coaches, faculty, graduate assistants, and
tutors, Hopkins coordinates an evening study
table for student athletes; arranges tutoring
time management and study skills; provides
individual counseling and referral for academic, personal, and career concerns; teaches
a specialized academic orientation course for
freshmen athletes; and advises students
about their academic requirements and
progress.
"My job is a very challenging and rewarding one," says Hopkins. "Watching the athletes be successful in completing an algebra
problem or performing an athletic feat is especially gratifying. Academics and athletics
can compliment each other. Success in the
academic area can aid in success on the athletic field. "

Since its founding as a state normal
school to prepare teachers for the Commonwealth, Eastern Kentucky Univers ity has
been a college of opportunity with a pnmary
emphasis on the teaching/learning process.
With a principal service region of
central and eastern Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University has served as a vehicle for
upward mobility for generations of Appalachian Kentuckians. More than 70,000 degrees have been awarded on the Richmond
campus, and Eastern Kentucky University
graduates have distinguished themselves in
virtually every profession.
Thousands of other Kentuckians
have been influenced by Eastern Kentucky
University, either in the classroom or by the
University's faculty.
In fact there has been more than a
century of higher education on the 350-acre
Richmond campus, beginning with the 1874
founding of Central University. The roots of
present-day Eastern Kentucky University go
back to 1906 with the establishment of Eastern Kentucky State Normal School No. I on
the old Central University campus.

Since then Eastern has grown into
a comprehensive regional university serving
approximately 15,500 students through 150
degree programs and additional program
options offered in its nine colleges and
graduate school.
Although teacher education and a
liberal arts curriculm have remained high priorities at EKU, the University now offers
outstanding programs in business, law enforcement, industrial technology, occupational therapy, allied health and nursing, and
other special areas of technology unknown
in 1906 but critical to a complex and industrialized future.
Eastern has maintained a liberal admissions policy which over the years has
provided increased oportunities for Kentuckians to receive higher education. Students
who have taken advantage of this opportunity have found programs that recognize and
complement the academic needs of students
drawn from EKU's service region, and have
gone on to successful careers in their chosen fields. Eastern graduates reflect excellent admission rates to medical, law and dental schools and have performed well in those
schools and in their practices after graduation.

by Kim Buford, Richmond Register Staff Writer
Ninety-four percent of
Eastern Kentucky University
graduates said they would
recommend the university to
other students seeking a college education. More than 88
percent of students who attended
EKU during the 1993-94 school
year felt like they got a good overall education, according to a state
accountability report released by
the state of Kentucky in 1994.
The 1994 EKU accountability report, released in conjunction with the state Council on
Higher Education and EKU, is
required due to the passage ofSenate Bill I 09 by the 1992 Kentucky General Assembly.
The legislation requires each
of the eight state-funded universities to submit accountability reports which lists each institution's
mission and goals, a profile of the
institution, students' satisfaction
reports and parental satisfaction
in regards to higher education.
"I think it is clear that the
taxpayers of Kentucky and our
students are receiving a dollar's
worth of value for a dollar spent
in higher education in the state
of Kentucky, " reported EKU
President Hanly Funderburk in

THE CAMPUS BEAUTIFUL
he nickname, "The Campus Beautiful", aptly describes the Eastern
Kentucky University campus. It is
truly a beautiful atmosphere in which to live
and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's
system ofregional universities, is the culmination of more than a century of higher education development on it 350-acre main campus in Richmond, Today's modem Eastern
offers colleges and graduate school including education, allied health and nursing, computer science, business, sciences, law enforcement, recreation, and environmental resources that provide educational opportunities to meet society's demands.
The pursuit of academic excellence has been
pledged as one of the foremost objectives of
the University.
The University seeks to fulfill the "livingwhile-leaming" concept by providing comfortable living conditions for almost 7,000
students in campus residence halls. Eastern
can accommodate more students on campus
than any other university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic institution, Eastern Kentucky is also
noted for its program of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The accomplishments ofthe Colonel and Lady Colonel
athletics teams are a source ofgreat pride for
the student body and campus community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment opportunities as nationally known lecturers,
artists, and entertainers appear on campus.
A wide variety of student and faculty musical groups also provide a fine selection of
entertainment options.
Whether it be in the area of academics, the
athletic arena, or campus life, Eastern Kentucky University continues its stride toward
excellence.

Organized under a single adm inistrative unit, the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Athletics includes three academic departments, the Division of Athletics, and the Division of
Intramural Programs. The three academic departments; Health Education, Physical Education, and
Recreation and Park Administration, offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs with l 2 different
options. The Division of Athletics sponsors eight intercollegiate sports for men and eight intercollegiate
sports for women. In addition to the balanced intercollegiate athletics program, the Division oflntramural
programs sponsors competitive team and individual sports, recreational free play, sport clubs, camping
trips, equipment rental, and other co-ed activities for students, faculty, and staff.
These programs are an integral part of the total program and development of Eastern students. They
offer experiences which contribute immeasurably to the health, vitality and preparation of young people
as citizens and for their leadership contributions to the youth in the nation's schools and elsewhere.
Possessing academic backgrounds that represent more than a score of the finest colleges and
universities in the nation, the coaches of athletics are members of the full-time faculty that provide the
academic and intramural, as well as, varsity athletic programs housed within the College.
The Dean of the College is Dr. Robert J. Baugh. The three academic departments are chaired by:
Dr. Donald Calitri, Health Education; Dr. Lonnie Davis, Physical Education; Dr. Larry Belknap,
Recreation and Park Administration. John Jewell serves as director of the Division of Intramural
Programs.
The College's intercollegiate athletics program is administered by Dr. Robert Baugh, who also serves
as athletics director. Mike Blaser is assistant athletics director for external affairs, while Betty Werner
is associate director of athletics for internal affairs.
EKU, a member ofthe NCAA and Ohio Valley Conference, fields athletic teams in football, baseball,
men's and women's basketball, tennis, cross country, track and field (indoor and outdoor), golf, women's
softball and volleyball.
In addition to a diversified faculty, extensive indoor and outdoor resources are required to support
the wide scope operation of Eastern's College of HPER&A, and most facilities serve multipurpose
functions for instruction and athletics. The College's programs are housed in five major campus
structures: The Robert B. Begley Building, Alumni Coliseum, Weaver Health Building, the Presnell
Building, and the Greg Adams Building.
Numerous tennis courts, recreation areas, Gertrude Hood Field, Turkey Hughes Baseball Field and
the Tom C. Samuels nine-lane track and tartan infield are among the other facilities of the College.
The F.M. Burke Wellness Center, located in the Weaver Health Building, provides a practical
educational opportunity for students as well as individualized physical activity, lifestyle assessment,
and physical assessment that can assist faculty and staff in the development of healthy lifestyles.

TOM SAMUELS TRACK

The site for Eastern Kentucky University's home meets is the Tom
Samuels Track, dedicated in 1976 and named in honor of the former Eastern
football and track coach. The track, resurfaced in 1988 and scheduled for resurfacing again this spring, is equipped with nine lanes of Chevron running surface,
measures 400 meters in circumference and is designed so that dash events may
be run in either direction, if necessary. Other features of the track and chevron
infield include 40-foot radius, complete circle high jump area, a pole vault strip
which is also convertible for jumps in either direction, and a steeplechase water
jump facility which is covered with chevron surface.
