THE TRADITION CONTINUES
OVC Championships Keep Piling Up

Eastern Kentucky University's Track and Cross
Country program has dominated all other Universities in the Ohio Valley Conference in recent history.
Eastern has won 42 of74 conference championships
in the past 20 years of competition. The women's
teams have finished no lower than third in the tenteam league, and the men have been no worse than
fifth in league competition.
The Colonels' overall records in conference championships are 3 17-37 for the women and 236-48 with
the men. The women's cross country team has a 20
year Ohio Valley Conference record of 169-2 against
OV C teams, and the cross country men have won ten
titles in 15 years to ho ld a 149-13 record over OVC
men's teams.
Eastern Kentucky's women have been one of the
top track programs since 1983 posting a 94-1 8 record,
dominating their opponents. In the Ohio Valley Conference indoor championship through the years, the
Lady Colonels have posted a 78-22 record.
In scoring for the OVC All-Sports Trophy, Eastern Kentucky's track and cross country programs have
scored more than 695 points with the women and
more than 500 points with the men, scoring more
points than any other OVC team in the last 19 years.
The Colonels again have the potential to regain
the cross country championsips in 2002 with both the
men 's and women's teams. A win for the women will
give them 19 championships in 21 years. The men
will be going after their eleventh win in 19 years in
2002. Also, the men will try to regain the track championship and the women will try to continue their
domination in the conference track championships.
Eastern Kentucky University 's track and cross
country program has a very successful past and the
future looks even better. This is why winning at Eastern Kentucky University is...

✓CROSS COUNTRY
Eastern Kentucky U niversity prepares for the cross
country season this year as it has any other -- as prohibitive favorites but ready for the challenge. The Lady
Colonels have won eighteen of the last 20 Ohio Valley
Conference Championship dati ng back to 1981. After
losing the championship in 200 I , the team is ready to
begin a new streak.
Recruiting will be the key to the success of the
women's cross country bid to regain the OVC championship in 2002. Returning will be junior Tiffaney
Cartwright and sophomore Wendee Embry. They are
the reason the tradition continues at Eastern Kentucky.
With the addition of some fine freshmen runners,
the Eastern Kentucky University Cross Country team
should be a team to challenge in the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship during the fall
of 2002.
Eastern Kentucky has always been an NCAA District Ill top IO team over the past 20 years, with the

University's highest place coming in 1988 with a
third place finish.
"Our main goal is to be one of the top teams in the
District Ill each year and to compete against the top
Div is ion I programs in the country," stated R ick
Erdmann, EKU head cross country coach.
By finishing with a 24-8 record during the 200 I
cross country season, the Easte rn Kentucky team again
ranks as one of the premiere distance programs in the
nation. With wins agai nst several nationally-ranked
teams during the year, the Lady Colonels have continued to stay among the best.
Eastern Kentucky's cross country team has also
been one of the top academic programs in the country,
ranking as high as fourth in 1995 with a grade-po int
average of 3.47.
The Lady Colone ls' 2002 schedule will again be
challenging and should provide for some exciting competition.

TRACK AND FIELD
dlers Nichole Gibson and Cynita Hoskins both from
Louisville, KY and sophomore hurdler Onyinyechi
Chuku (Largo, MD).
Returning s printers Melan ie Bail ey (U pper
Marlboro, MD) and Nicole Moore (Ann Arbor, Ml)
will also be important assets to the sprint crew.
Junior throwers, Erin Davis (Louisville, KY), Stefanie Hurley (Xenia, OH) and Beth Hull (Washington,
PA) along with j unior long jumper Lacy Turner (Dos
Palos, CA) will be called upon to provide points at the
conference championship to help the women reclaim
the Ohio Valley Conference crown.
" We look for gradual development from our freshmen, so that they are ready to compete against the best
nationally by the end of the season," explained Moore.
The combination of youth and experience in the
distance and sprints enabled the Colonels to capture
both the OVC indoor and outdoor titles in 1999.
" Hopefully, with a good recruit ing class this season, we will again be one of the top programs in the
Southeast. Our schedule still remains one of the toughest in the country," stated Moore.

A combination of youth and experience w ill once
again make Eastern Kentucky's women's track and field
team a force to be reckoned with in the spring. The
Lady Colonels will again be one of the strongest in the
Southeast. With a powerful distance program returning and a good group of developing sprinters, the
women should maintain their prominence in track and
field.
"We will work to be much improved this year as
the young team matures throughout the season," said
EKU assistant track coach Tim Moore.
With the addition of some fine freshmen and transfers, Eastern Kentucky will have more depth in several
events. "To continue on the upward move, we must
have good performances from distance runners and
sprinters," added Moore.
Returning will be sen ior sprinters Sheri Calhoun
(Kutztown, PA) and Renata Simmons (Richmond, KY)
to provide the leadership for this year's sprint team.
Also, veteran distance runners Tiffaney Cartwrig ht
(Botkins, OH) and Angie Lee (Clarkson, KY) will carry
a giant load of responsibility along with junior hur-

"One of my best experiences was the record setting 39.9 4 x I 00 meter relay in Tallahassee, Florida in the Dominos Relays.
We were hot that week winning the 4 x I 00 meter and placing in the top four in the other relays."
Stan Pringle

"The two good things that happened to me while at EKU was I got a great education that has prepared me for life and I got to
train and compete against the nation 's best runners. Also I have met some great teammates which I still stay in contact with
after graduation 12 years ago."
Bill Hoffman
Distance Runner
Teacher and Coach
"The most important things I learned at EKU were that there are no limits except the ones you put on yourself, and that with
hard work and dedication you can achieve everything you desire. My EKU experience has taught me the real value of
sisterhood, loyalty, friendship, truth and most importantly teamwork."
Vashti Canty
Hurdler and Sprinter

"The best times in my life came from being a part of the Eastern Kentucky University tradition. Not only was it a great honor
to be a part of the greatest teams in EKU history, but also the lessons in li fe and relationships that came from my EKU
experience will be cherished forever."
Ryan Parrish

"While I attended EKU, I grew and matured into a man. I also met people who have left a positive impression on my life.
Coach Moore and Coach Erdmann also taught me a lot about myself that I never knew. I'm thankful for my ex periences at
EKU. God led me there for a reason."
Leon Pullen

"After close to three years of a performance slump, competing more or less unsuccessfull y in Germany, Eastern's track team
and coaching staff energized and motivated me to new heights and personal records - in particular, the 50.6 1 seconds in the
400m hurdles during the summer of 1996. Eventually, 1 won the bronze medal in this event at the German Championshi ps
that year."
Danie l Blochwitz

"The re lationships I developed, in particular Coach Erdmann and Coach Moore, have proven to be extreme ly helpful in my
professional life. Their unselfish acts have helped me in my efforts in developing a strong track club at the middle school

THE PAST

,-,a ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS
Eastern Kentucky University's track and field program is
not only one of the top teams in the Southeast on the track, but
with 13 Verizon-CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 15 years,
it ranks among the best in the country in the classroom. EKU's
13 Academic All- Americans - Roger C hapman, Al lison
Kotouch, Danny Copeland, Lisa Ma lloy (2), Amy Clements
(3), Sarah Blossom (4) and Dan iel Blochwitz - show the pride
that the track and field program has in academics.
Chapman, of Steve nage, England, and a 1987 graduate of
Eastern Kentucky University, boasted a 3.98 grade point average at Eastern, whil e completing a degree in computer science
in three and one half years. At the time of his selection,
Chapman was a lso an outstanding midd le di stance runner at
Eastern holding school records in the indoor 800 and I 000
meter runs. Along with his All-Ame rican honor, he rece ived a
NCAA post-graduate scholarship to attend the University of
Edinburg, England. Chapman now has his Doctorate and is a
college professor.
Kotouch, of Baden, Pennsylvania, was Eastern's second
track student-athlete and the first female to receive Academic
All-American honors. She earned her degree in nursing, while
mainta ining a perfect 4.0 GPA through her junior year. She
was the 1985 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete
of the Year as a freshman and was an instrumental reason fo r

MEN'S OUTLOOK
CROSS COUNTRY
Coming off a great cross country season in 200 I finishing second at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the future looks good for the Eastern Kentucky University harriers. If past history is a guide, then the Colonels could continue their dominance of the OVC. The
Colonels have been the top distance program over the
last 15 years and should continue to improve. They have
finished as champions or runners-up during those years.
The team will look to three returning runne rs to step
up and provide the leadership necessary for their 12th
title in 15 years. The Colonels look to build upon experience and continue to be very competitive in the OVC
and the NCAA Divisio n I District III meets. Seniors Gary
Garman (Butler, PA) and Alan Horton ( Knoxville, TN)

will play an important role in the success of the 2002
team, along with senio r Eric VanOstrand and junior Phil
Scott. Also competing with the cross country program
for the first time will be junior Brent Reiter, who will
round out the top five this season.
The Colonels finished fifth at the 1999 NCAA District III meet and wi 11 strive to finish even higher in one
of the toug hest regions in the country. To prepare for the
challenge, the men's schedule includes some of the top
competition in the country. The Colonels will face a very
rigorous slate to get ready for the Ohio Valley Conference and the NCAA District ITI cross country championships.

TRACK AND FIELD
The men's indoor and outdoor team will once again
compete for a high finish in the Ohio Valley Conference
in 2003, looking to improve upon top three finishes during the indoor and outdoor conference meets in 20012002 and a number four finish at the indoor championship in 2000 and a third place finish in 2001. The men's
program has consistently been in the OVC's upper echelon and this year should be no exception. This year's
team should be one of the m ost balanced tea ms in
Eastern 's rich track tradition.
Coming off a g reat 200 I - 2002 season, the distance
and middle distance program will be the center of attention during the 2003 season. The crew will be led by Phil
Scott, Eric VanOstand and newcomer Brent Reiter.
With the improvement in the sprint events, the team
should be ready to challenge all comers during the 20022003 season.
This has been a rebuilding year for both the distance
program and sprint program at Eastern Kentucky University and it has proven to be a good one. With the addition of some new recruits, the future looks bright for the
Colonels.
It will be important for the team to get off the ground
early with the fall training program and continue w ith
the mental competitive edge all of the Colonel track and
field teams have had in the past.

With the newly renovated Tom Samuels Track as fast
as ever and the new atmosphere it gives to the team, the
Eastern Ke ntucky University t rack and fie ld school
records should again fall during the 2003 campaign. Many
student-athletes will vie for relay positions which will
create that competitive spirit during the practice sessions.
The squad should again be successful during the 20022003 season.
With conference champi o n Tyrone Walker
(Harrodsburg, KY) in the high jump and all-conference
sprinter Dan Pallex (Green Bay, WI) in the sprints, the
prog ram is on the way back to prominence. Others who
will make an impact are Anlami Shaw (Kingston, Jamaica), Sheldon Scott (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) and
Aaron Coney (Radcliff, KY) in the sprints and sprint relays.
With the addition of Marvin Elmore (Watertown, NY)
and Dallas Robinson (Crestwood, KY), a transfer from
Morehead State University in the sp rint events, the team
should again finish strong in the Ohio Valley Conference
and be one of the top relay teams in the Southeast.
"We have more quality up front than in the past, and
the talent is spread among several phases of the program.
We may not have the depth that some aspects of the program have enjoyed through the years, but we definitely
have a good balance," offered Colonel assistant track
coach Tim Moore.

r ~TRACK & FIELD FACILITIES

The site for Eastern Kentucky University's
home meets is the Tom Samuels Track, dedicated in
1976 and named in honor of the former Eastern football and track coach. The track, resurfaced during
the spring of 1999, is equipped with nine 46-inch
lanes of a Eurotan ML running surface. It measures
400 meters in circumference and is designed so that
the 100 and 200 meter dash and I 00/ 110 meter hurdle
events may be run in e ither direction, if necessary.
Another feature of the track is an infie ld which includes a 40-foot radius complete circle high jump

area, a dual direction pole vault runway which is also
convertible for jumps in either direction, a steeplechase faci I ity with non-skid barriers and a water jump
area which is covered with the Eurotan ML surface.
Also, the infield includes an all-weather javelin area.
The discus and shot put circles have a concrete surface and are located in the infield of the track. Overall, the faci lity is one of the best in the state and surrounding area. It has proven to be a great place to
train and compete over the years and, with the renovation, it is even better.

With the construction of the new indoor track
stadium on the Eastern Kentucky University campus, the program will be extremely enhanced. The
completion date is the spring of 2003. The facility
will house a five-lane 200-meter flat track with a top
of the line synthetic surface. The infield will include
exercise and weight training equipment.

The facility is being built by the state of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice.
Pictured above is an architectural drawing of the
faci lity, below at the left is EKU's Tom Samuels'
Outdoor Track and Field stadium, and to the right is
a one-mile woodchip trail for distance and middle
distance training. This area is also the possible future
home ofthe Eastern Kentucky University cross country teams.

HARRY MOBERLY BUILDING

One of the most functional facilities available to
Eastern Kentucky University athletics is the Harry
Moberly Building, completed in the Fall of 2000 and
dedicated in November of 2000.
The building was named for former Eastern student-athlete, founding member of the EKU Colonel
Club and active supporter of EKU athletics, Harry
Moberly. A quarterback for the Eastern football team
from 1931-34, Moberly's visionary leadership was
instrumental in establishing, building and strengthening the Colonel Club, EKU's intercollegiate athletics booster organization.
The building, located adjacent to Roy Kidd Stadium, is a 40,000 square-foot, $ 4.75 million stateof-the-art facility.
The first floor features a strength and weight development area which was dedicated in November of
2000 as the Raymond E. Giltner Conditioning Center. The Giltner Center, named for the late Raymond
Giltner who served two terms as president of the EKU
NationalAlumniAssocation, as a director of the EKU
Foundation and vice chair of the Foundation's Planned
Giving Committee, houses equipment designed to
help build strength, muscle development and reha-

38

bilitation for EKU's student athletes. Jeff Barnard
serves as EKU's strength and conditioning coach and
he is headquartered in the new facility.
Also located on the first floor is the main training
facility for EKU's 16 intercollegiate athletics teams.
The facility provides an in-ground hydrotherapy pool
with rehabilitation equipment, three above-ground

BRATZKE ACADEMIC CENTERr ~
The Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success
Center (SAAS) is one of the newest facilities at Eastern
Kentucky University. The SAAS Center, located in Alumni
Coliseum, is designed to aid EKU 's student-ath letes in all
facets of their academic pursuits.
Included in the new academic facility are tutoring faci lites,
a quiet study area, a computer lab and administrative offices.
Former EKU All-American and current Indianapolis Colts'
defensive lineman, Chad Bratzke, was instrumental in furni shing the area properly with his generous gift to EKU
athletics.
The SAAS Center is staffed by Joan Hopkins, EKU's
coordinator for athletics' academic advising.
"The opening of the SAAS Center began a new era of
rededication of our athletic program to the student in every
athlete that walks on our campus," said Hopkins. "In the
SAAS Center, we provide increased academic support to
enable our students to be the best they can be in the classroom."
EKU annually finishes among the leaders in the Ohio
Valley Conference's men's and women's all-sports trophy
standings. EKU has also won the prestigious Ohio Valley
Conference Academic Achievement Banner eight times ( 1988
through 1992, 1994-95, 1997-98, 1999-2000, 2001 -2002).

T

he nickname, "The Campus Beautiful," aptly
describes the Eastern Kentucky University
campus. It is a truly beautiful atmosphere in which to
live and learn.
Eastern, a member of the Commonwealth's system
of regional universities, is the culmination of more
than a century of higher education development on
its 560-acre main campus in Richmond. Today 's
modern Eastern offers more than 150 degree programs
in its five academic colleges and graduate school
including Education , Business & Technology, Arts &
Sciences, Justice & Safety and Health Sciences that
provide educational opportunities to meet society's
demands.
The University seeks to fulfill the "living-whilelearning" concept by providing comfortable living conditions for almost

4,500 students in campus residence halls. Eastern can
accommodate more students on campus than any other
university in the state.
In addition to being a highly respected academic
institution, Eastern is also noted for its program of
intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. The
accomplishments of the Colonel athletics teams are a
source of great pride for the student body and campus
community.
Eastern is a hub for cultural enrichment opportunities as nationally known lecturers, artists and
entertainers appear on campus. A wide variety of student and faculty musical groups also provide a fine
selection of entertainment options.
Whether in academics, athletics or campus life,
Eastern continues its stride toward
excellence.
