Eastern Kentuck y University's Track and Cross
Country program has dominated all other Universities in
the Ohio Valley Conference in recent history. Eastern
has won 45 of 90 conference championships in the past
23 years of competition. The women's teams have finished no lower than fifth in the I I-team league, and the
men have been no worse than fifth in league competition.
The Colonels' overall records in conference championships are 379-55 for the women and 292-63 with the
men. The women's cross country team has a 22 year
Ohio Valley Conference record of 212-5 against OVC
teams, and the cross country men have won l l titles in
l 8 years to hold a 183- 16 record over OVC men's teams.
Eastern Kentucky's women have been one of the top
track programs since 1983 posting a 131-33 record, dominating their opponents. In the Ohio Valley Conference
indoor championship through the years, the Lady Colonels have posted an 97-28 record.
In scoring for the OVC All-Sports Trophy, Eastern
Kentucky 's track and cross country programs have scored
more than 800 points with the women and more than 600
points with the men, scoring more points than any other
OVC team in the last 22 years.
The Colonels again have the potential to regain the
cross country championsips in 2006 with both the men's
and women's teams. A win for the women will give them
20 championships in 23 years. The men will be going
after their 12th win in 23 years in 2006. Also, the men
will try to regain the track championship and the women
will try to continue their domination in the conference
track championships.
Eastern Kentucky University's track and cross country program has a very successful past and the future looks
even better. This is why winning at Eastern Kentucky
University is ...

WOMEN'S OUTLOOK
CROSS COUNTRY
Eastern Kentucky University prepares for the cross
country season this year as it has any other - as prohibiti ve favorites but ready fo r the challenge. The Lady Colonels have won 20 of the last 23 Ohio Valley Conference
championships dating back to 1981. After finishing third
at the 2005 championships, the team will be eager to begin a new streak in 2006.
Recruiting will be the key to the success of the
wo me n's cross country team's bid to regain the OVC
championship in 2006. Returning will be seniors-to-be
Shannon Miller and Courtney Engel. They are the reason the tradition continues at Eastern Kentucky.
With the addition of some fine freshmen runne rs, the
Eastern Kentucky University cross country team should
be a team to challenge in the Ohio Valley Conference
Cross Country Championships during the fa ll of 2006.
Eastern Kentucky has always been a perennial NCAA
District III top 10 team over the past 22 yea rs, with the

university's highest fini sh coming in 1988 with a with a
final ranking of third.
"Our main goal is to be one of the top teams in our
district each year and to compete against the top NCAA
Division I programs in the country," stated EKU head
coach Rick Erdmann.
The Eastern Kentucky cross country team once again
ranks as one of the premiere d istance programs in the
nation and with wins against several highly ranked teams
during the year, the Lady Colonels have continued to stay
among the best.
Eastern Kentucky 's cross country team has also been
one of the top academic programs in the- country, ranking
as high as fourth in 1995 with a 3.47 grade-po int average.
The Lady Colonels' 2006 schedule will again be challenging and should provide for some exciting competition.

TRACK AND FIELD
A combination of experience and yo uth will once
again make Eastern Kentucky's wome n 's track and field
team a force to be reckoned with in the spring. The Lady
Colonels will again be one of the strongest teams in the
Southeast.
With a powerful sprint and hurdle program returning
and a good group of developing distance runners, the
women should maintain their prominence in track and
field.
"We will work to be much improved this year as the
young team matures throughout the season," said EKU
assistant track coach Tim Moore.
With the addition of some solid freshmen and transfers, Eastern will have more depth in several events.
"To continue on the upward move, we must have good
performances from sprinters and hurdlers, and the distance program," added Moore .

CROSS COUNTRY
Coming off a great cross country season in 2005 ,
which included a second-place fini sh at the Ohio Valley
Conference championships, the future looks bright for
the Easte rn Kentucky University harrie rs. If past history
is a guide, the n the Colonels could continue their dominance of the OVC.
The Colonels have been the top distance program in
the OVC over the last 20 years, finishing as conference
champions or runne rs-up during each of those years, and
should continue to improve.
Conference individual champion Jacob Korir re turns
in 2006 after a sophomore season in which he was na med
an All-American, fini shing 19th at the 2005 NCAA cross
country championships.
The team will also look to two returning runne rs to
step up and provide the leadership necessary for the ir
11th title in 18 years. The Colonels look to build upon
expe rience and continue to be very competitive in the

O VC and the NCAA Division I District Ill meets.
Senior Corne lius Chelule, a 2005 second-team AIIOVC me mbe r, and sophomore Jacob Fortney, who finished sixth at the OVC championships, will play an important role in the success of the 2006 team .
To prepare fo r the challe nge, the me n 's schedule will
include some of the top competition in the country. The
Colonels will face a very rigorous slate to get ready for
the Ohio Valley Conference and the NCAA Division I
District III cross country championships.

TRACK AND FIELD
The men's indoor and outdoor team will once again
compete for a high finish in the Ohio Valley Conference
in 2006, looking to improve upon a third-place fini sh during the 2005 indoor and outdoor confe rence meets. The
men 's program has consiste ntly been in the OVC's uppe r
echelon and this year should be no exception, as the 2006
Colonels should be one of the most balanced squads in
Eastern 's ric h track tradition.
Coming off a g reat 2005 season, the sprint and middle
distance program will be the cente r of attention in 2006.
The crew will be led by NCAA Regional qualifier Steve
Maina and Jacob Korir.
With the improvement in the distance events, the team
should be ready to challenge all come rs during the 2006
season.
This has been a re building year for both the distance
and sprint programs at Eastern Kentucky, a nd it has
proven to be a good one. With the addition of some new
recruits, the future looks as bright as ever for the Colonels.
It will be important for the team to get off the ground
earl y with the fall training program and continue the men-

tal competiti ve edge all of the Colonel track and field teams
have had in the past.
With the surface of Tom Samuels Track as fast as
ever, several EKU track and fie ld school records should
again fall during the 2006 campaign. Many student-athletes will vie for relay positions which will create that
competitive spirit during the practice sessions and ensure a successful 2006 season.
With conference champion Steve Maina (800 meters)
returning , the program is well on its way back to promine nce. Others who will make an impact are sophomores
Jacob Korir and Mike Halliwell.
With seniors James Machungo and Cornelius Chelule
in the distance events, the team sho uld again fini sh strong
in the Ohio Valley Conference and be one of the top relay teams in the Southeast.
"We have more qual ity up front than we have had in
the past, and the talent is spread among several phases of
the program," said EKU assistant track coach Tim Moore.
"We may not have the depth that some aspects of the
program have enjoyed through the years, but we definitely have a good balance."

THE UNIVERSITY

Easte rn Ke ntucky Uni versity is known as the Campus Beautiful, and for good reason.
The EKU campus is one of the most sceni c college campuses
in the nation and it features several striking features. From the
James E. van Peursem Music Pavilion and the Ravine, the
Chapel of Meditation, and the Keen Johnson Building, EKU
featu res some of the most diverse and attractive locales on any
college campus anywhere.
However strong Eastern Kentucky's re putation is for its
visual aesthe tics, the real character of the University can be
found in its students, fac ulty and staff, and o utstanding academic programs.
EKU offe rs more than 160 degree programs and features an
excellent 17- I stude nt-to-faculty ratio. The University serves
nearly 16,000 stude nts, whic h re present a ll 120 counties in
Kentucky, a ll 50 states, and over 60 countries worldwide.
The Unive rsity, wh ic h is set to celebrate its centennial in
2006, had humble beginnings. EKU's orig ins can be traced
back to a conflict between the northern and southern branches
of Kentucky 's Presbyterian Church.
A group of alumni and supporte rs from the Southern branch
lost control of Centre College in Danville and set out to start
the ir own institution of higher learning. From that conflict,
Central College was chartered in I 873 and the school opened in
September of 1874.
Financial problems led to Central College's consolidation
into Centre College in 1901 , but R ichmond 's place in highe r
education d id not move with Central College. Walter's Colleg iate Institute offered a pre paratory curric ulum fo r collegebound men and served as a transitional institution between
Central College and what would become Eastern Kentucky
University.

In 1906 the Kentuc ky Gene ral Assembly approved a bill that
would establish two normal schools in the eastern and western
parts of the state in order to prepare teachers to enter the
classroom. The easte rn school, whic h was located in Richmond, was called the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School,
later evolvi ng into the regional institution now known as Eastern Ke ntucky Uni versity.
Modern-day EKU now encompasses three branch campuses
in Corbin , Danville, and Manchester. The University also
boasts one of the state's strongest distance learning programs,
giving students from around the world an opportunity to receive
an EKU education.
EKU is also home to the Co llege of Justice and Safety, which
educates students from around the world. As EKU 's Program of
Distinction, the College of Justice and Safety is involved in
nume rous world wide research projects. It also educates a vast
majority of the police officers in the Commonwealth.
The Univers ity also boosts 16 championship sports at the
NCAA 's Division I level, compe ting in the Oh io Valley Conference. The Colonels history includes several national championships, confere nce titles, an d NCAA tournament appearances.
However, the best is yet to come as the school's athletic
department is committed to e nsuring that EKU student-athletes
are g iven the necessary resources to continue to compete at a
national level.
All told, Eastern Kentucky provides a safe and attractive
e nvironment in which its students can learn and become productive members of society. The lessons learned at EKU w ill
follow students for a lifetime and the performance of its graduates will, in turn, continue to enhance the already strong
regional and national re putation of the Uni versity.

offices.
The SAAS Center is staffed by Joan Hopkins, EKU ' s coordinator for
athletics' academic ad vising, John Stratman, ath leti cs academ ic advisor,
and two acade mi c coun selors.
"The SAAS Center began a new era of rededication by our athletic
program to the student in every athlete that walks o n o ur campus," said
Hopkins. " In the SAAS Center, we provide increased acade mi c support
to enable our students to be the best they can be in the classroom."
Pairing academic achieveme nt with athletic accomplishment is the
primary focus of eve ry athletic program at EKU, and the SAAS cente r
allows Eastern to offer some of the finest s uppo rt services in college
athletics. Headed by Hopkins, the Colo ne ls' support staff offers academic and/or personal counseling, guidance in c lass registration and
scheduling of a ll student-athle tes, supervised study tables, access to a
compute r lab and a tutoring program.
Peer tutors aid E K U's stude nt-athletes not only w ith an array of
