ALL AMERICAN CANDIDATE
TINA COTTLE

THE 1984-85 OUTLOOK

Four letter winners led by senior All-American candidate
Tina Cottle return for Dr. Dianne Murphy's 1984-85 Eastern
Kentucky University women's basket ball team. The Colonels
will be hard pressed to duplicate last year's second place finish
( 10-4) in the Ohio Valley Conference fo llowing t he departure of
EK U's all-time leading scorer Lisa Goodin, a four-year starter
who has graduated.
Murphy will look to Cottle for scoring and rebounding, and
also for leadership as the Miami, Fla., native looks t o close out
her college career in fine fashion. The 6-1, 160-lb. pivot player
led Eastern in rebounding last year with 9.5 grabs and finished
second in scoring behind Goodin with a 15.2 average. Last year
was Cattle's first in a Colonel uniform after playing at Austin
Peay and then at Miami Dade-South Community College where
she earned Junior College All-American honors in 1981-82.
Also returning will be seniors Shannon Brady and Marcia
Haney along with Margy Shelton, a junior. Brady, a 6-1
forward-post player, was a regular last season finishing with a
9.6 scoring average and 6.1 rebound per game. Shelton, a 6-0
forward, also saw considerable action as a starter and averaged
6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds. Haney, 5-11, was one of Murphy's
more reliable players off the bench at a forward position. She
chipped in with 5.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Also
returning for their sophomore seasons are Van M arshel and Lois
Buntyn.
Murphy along with assistant coaches Nell Hensley and
Linda Myers inked seven talented recruits t hat are expected t o
provide immediate help. At the top of t he list is transfer Angela
Fletcher, a 5-9 junior guard, who dazzled o pponents while at
Roane State Community College enroute to JUCO AllAmerican honors. Murphy will also get help at guard from Heidi
Gast, a 5-5 freshman, who averaged 23.2 points per game during
her career at Danbury High School in Lakeside, 0, a nd 5-7
fres hman Sondra Miller, Kentucky's prep scoring leader at M .C.
Napier High School with a 28-point aver~ge. Other newcomers
are Carla Coffey, a 6-0 freshman forward-post player from
Bullitt Central High School, 5- 10 freshman forward Tracey
Underwood fro m Lexington Lafayette High School, J ulie Levis,
a 5-8 guard from Oldham County, and Lisa Harvey, a 6-3 center
from Silver S pring , MD.
Murphy has lined up an attractive 27-game schedule which
includes an appea ra nce in the Lady Sunshine Classic in Orland o,
Fla. , N ov. 23-24, which is comprised of Auburn, A rkansas,
Mia mi (Fla.), and EK U. EK U will also host its annual Colonel
Classic, Dec. 7-8, with Western Kentucky, Kent State and
Duquesne providing the opposition. In addition to the rugged
14-game round robin schedule, the Colonels will face nonconference foes Dayton, Southeast Missouri, Bellarmine,
Evansville, Kentucky State, Cleveland State, and Davis and
Elkins College.

The steady improvement of the Eastern Kentucky University women's
basket ball pro gram over the
past five years can be attributed to an intensive
approach, sound recruiting
tactics, and a commitment
to hard work by head coach,
Dr. Dianne Murphy. From
being a team which could
hardly gain respect in Kentucky, the Colonels are now
regarded as one of the top
programs in the state as well
as considered one of the
most competitive in the
DR . DIANNE M U RPHY
Ohio Valley Conference.
As a coach and player, Murphy has been a success wherever
she has been. She was a student-athlete at Tennessee Technological University and lettered on the volleyball, basketball, and
tennis teams. She graduated from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville
in 1972 with a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education. She
earned her Masters in the same field while working as a coaching
graduate assistant in the Tech program in 1973, and completed
her doctoral dissertation for a Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1980.
Her coaching days started as the head basketball coach at
Shorter College in Rome, Georgia where she coached the
Hawkettes to 4-11, 20-8, and 13-11 seasons. From 1976-79, she
was at the helm of the Florida State Lady Seminoles basketball
program, and turned their program around with excellent
recruiting and a sound coaching philosophy. Her first year at
Florida State, Murphy was looking for a little respect around the
state and produced a 11-12 record. The 1977-78 team finished
second in the F AIA W State tournament with a 19-15 record
while the 1978-79 edition of the Lady Seminoles captured the
FAIA W state title and finished with a 19-14 record.
In her five years at Eastern Kentucky University, Murphy
has taken a team who was 5-24 prior to her arrival and produced
seasons of 9-19, 16-14, 14-16, 14-13, and 17-11. Last year,
Murphy's team notched wins over Duke, from the powerful
A CC conference, Wisconsin of the Big IO conference and the
University of Louisville from the Metro conference. The
Colonels finished with a 10-4 record to tie Tennessee Tech for
second place in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Murphy has chaired numerous basketball committees and
has been elected to Who's Who in American Women. She was
selected by her colleagues as the 1980-81 Co-Coach of the Year
in the Ohio Valley Conference. She is a frequent guest speaker at
banquets and clinics and always generates enthusiasm and
support for the Eastern Kentucky women's basketball program.
Murphy has also been successful with summer basketball camps
and has conducted coaching workshops and has published
numerous articles on basketball.
