About your K.H.S.A.A . .. A helping hand . .. • Your Kentucky High School Athletic Association serves as the governing agency for all 12 of Kentucky's high school sports. Your association regulates eligibility rules and sponsors 29 state championships. • Your association is dedicated to serving its member schools. That's why we pay the premium on a catastrophic life insurance plan that covers every student-athlete in the state of Kentucky. From the classroom to the practice field to the game court if a catastrophic accident should occur, your association will be there to provide comfort and financial assistance. Your association also provides a liability insurance plan for member schools and coaches. • Your association is a private, nonprofit organization that receives no tax funding. All of the K.H.S.A.A.'s operating budget comes from private donations and receipts from the state championships (basketball, football and soccer receipts comprise 80% of the association's revenue I) Our new home ... • Construction is underway on a 25,000 square foot building that will house your association's offices and a Hall of Fame and Museum (to honor the thousands of persons who have made a lasting contribution to high school athletics in the state of Kentucky.) To honor the more than 1,000,000 Kentucky men and women who have contributed to "Great Moments in Kentucky High School Sports" throughout the years, the Dawahares/ Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame was established in 1988. The association chose this manner in which to pay tribute to, and to immortalize record setting and influential coaches, players, officials and supporters of high school athletics in this great Commonwealth. To date, sixtyseven members have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. After twenty-two new members are inducted on March 13, 1991, the total number of members in the Hall of Fame will have reached eighty-nine. The Association began the project with the help of the Dawahare family, as an effort to recognize the excellence of high school educators, athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and other contributors. According to Dee Dawahare, of Lexington, "We want to recognize and encourage the academic as well as athletic contributions of these fine individuals." Hall of Fame members are chosen for their contributions to Kentucky high school athletics. K.H.S.A.A. Commissioner Tom Mills stressed that "while many Hall of Fame Members, such as Paul Hornung, Cliff Hagan, and Tommy Bell, have gone on to outstanding careers in college or professional sports, they are primarily honored for their accomplishments in Kentucky high schools." Other members such as S.T. ·Roach, longtime coach at Lexington's Dunbar ·High School, and Ralph Carlisle, who c.oached at Lexington's Lafayette High School, are honored for the ,g uidance they have given thousands of young people.
