<text>Bluegrass Army Depot Removed Graves – Cemetery B

Parks Cemetery

This is a listing of the graves that were moved to Cemetery B on Speedwell Road when the Bluegrass
Army Depot was built in 1942. For a more complete history of the removed graves please refer to page 5
of the Madison County Connections (vol. 2, no. 2). Many of the graves in this cemetery were unmarked
and unknown. There were last names given for some of the cemeteries, but no first names. This has
been noted on the list below with the number of unknown graves in parenthesis after the name. The
graves with an asterisk in front of them are graves that I was able to find. The others were not found and
could be in the part of the cemetery that is overgrown.
Conditions in this cemetery are similar to those in Cemetery A. A local church has been working to clear
the undergrowth, but years of neglect has taken its toll. Unlike Cemetery A, this cemetery is still being
used as such. Burials with no tract, section or lot numbers are new burials. In 1942 there was a total of
769 graves moved.
The original trustees were Matt Ballew, Matthew Baxter, Walt Dillingham and Thomas Hocker. Only one
of these, Mr. Hocker, aged 95, is still living.

<text>In 1941 the United States Army began purchasing land to build the Blue Grass Ordnance Depot, now known as the Blue Grass Army Depot. The army purchased two tracts of land outside the boundaries of the Depot and contracted with Sidney E. Haigh Company to remove nearly 1700 graves from dozens of family cemeteries to these tracts. Cemetery A on Highway 421 was for 'white' reinternments, and Cemetery B on Speedwell Pike was for 'colored' reinternments. During this process the Army created a number of surveys and reports relating to the removal, and in the years to follow there have been many news articles and several lawsuits filed relating to the upkeep and maintenance of Cemetery A in particular. This artificial collection was created to provide improved access to these materials which have been scattered throughout various collections.</text>
