Title: Portrait-Sullivan, Jere A.
Description: Board of Regents notes from 8/14/1926 indicate that J.A. Sullivan presented a portrait of himself to the school with the understanding that is should be received with no ceremony. The portrait was to be kept in the library until the university provided an appropriate location for it. Frame (property tag : 234727) has been separated from print. Sudduth Goff, the artist, was born in Eminence, KY, in 1887 but spent much of his life in Chicago. Two labels have been taped to the back of portrait. The first reads: "Hon. Jere A. Sullivan, 1862-1931. A native of Richmond, and a graduate of Central University, 1888. He was a successful lawyer, a Director of the State Bank and Trust Co., and was one of the founders of Eastern Kentucky State College. He represented Madison County in the Kentucky General Assembly, and was author of the act creating County High Schools for Kentucky, 1908. On the first board of Regents for Eastern he served from 1906 to 1930. Sullivan Hall, the first girls dormitory on the campus was named for him." The other label reads: "Judge Jere A. Sullivan, 1862-1931. Regent of Eastern, 1906-30. Author of the act creating county high schools in 1908. Native of Richmond. One of Eastern's founders."
