Born in 1937 in Tokushima, Japan, Matsubara grew up in Kyoto, Japan, but currently resides in Ontario, Canada. Primarily known for her woodcuts, Matsubara earned a BA from the Kyoto Academy of Fine Arts, and a MFA at the Carnegie Institute of Art. She also studied at the Royal College of Art in London. This print was one of eleven in a series entitled "Solitude" and designed to accompany an essay from Henry David Thoreau's "Walden Pond." The photos and the essay were published together in 1971.
