According to the museum, the photo is entitled "Running Water, Water, Moss, Leaves," and was taken on Roaring Fork Road, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee on October 10, 1967. In 1970, Porter published a book on the region entitled, "Appalachian Wilderness: The Great Smoky Mountains."
Porter was born in 1901 in Winnetka, IL. After earning a BS in chemical engineering at Harvard and a medical degree in 1929, he became a photographer after a short stint as a biochemical researcher. The color and diversity of the natural world is the primary focus of his work, and he has published photography books on Maine and the Adirondacks, as well as the Galapagos, East Africa, and Antarctica.
